  • I didn't know you were suppose to soak it!
I feel so dumb! We have been buying different materials to keep our box turtle happy. I have never come across Coconut Chip Substrate. Until now. I put this in Ted's tank-dry. This is what happens when you don't pay attention or read directions. I just fluffed it up and went about my day. In my defense, which is really grasping at straws, when I opened the packaging, it did puff up. I had to soak the chips before I put them in the cage. After soaking overnight, I was amazed how much it expanded. Ted was going to tunnel to the bottom of the tank and never come back. The cage doesn't have to be cleaned out as much. No smell from fresh food that Ted decided he wasn't in the mood or other off putting smells. Ted seems happy with it. He's burrowing and building tunnels. I see him now and then. Probably because he is getting deeper in his new coconut husk. I like new stuff, so why wouldn't he? I recommend Coconut Chip Substrate highly. Just make sure to read the directions if you haven't used it before. Your pet will thank you. ... show more

  • Good for plants that need highly porous soil
I use coco coir for starting seedlings and in above ground planters. This coco coir, which is a very rough grind, is great for plants that need a little extra in-ground growing room or extra ventilation. I'll be using this coco coir, and it did weigh-in at exactly 10 pounds, in an above ground planter for my carrots next spring. The normal soils available to me here in Central Arkansas are too heavy with lots of clay so they need to be broken up more. I'll be adding this coco coir to some native soil along with a good helping of perlite and compost. A bit on the expensive side but serves a purpose. Recommended. ... show more

  • Comparable to other brands of Coco Chip
I have used many many different brands of Coco chip. This brand is comparable to them all with a medium to small milling size and holds moisture just as good as any other. As far as pricing it falls in line with most other brands currently available. Good alternative choice....

  • Optimal substrate for many animals, great price/pound
I use coconut husk in my ball python, Madagascar hissing cockroach, Dubia cockroach, and southern alligator lizard's enclosures. For reptiles and invertebrates, I've found it overall better than other substrate materials I've tried, which include newspaper, paper pellet kitty litter, Carefresh, pine and aspen shavings, and soil. Although there's a do-it-yourself component to using this (add water and mix to expand), it's worth the extra effort. The unused portion stays compact and easily stored. This 10 lb. product is priced better per pound than other coconut husk products I've seen, which makes it an exceptional value. ... show more

  • Coco chips!
I personally did not even know this existed! I found out that you can use coco chips instead of wood chips through the vine program. I was use to get the wood chips and we are definitely making the change since it seems that our Russian tortoise loves it! It comes in a great size enough to change the pad for 2 times, it keeps the bad odors away, it looks good and it's easy to spread! ... show more

  • My Russian Box Tortoise loves it!
I usually use a Cyprus mulch but decided this wouldn’t hurt to try and my littler guy loves it! I think it’s because it has chunks instead of strips. I ordered the large size and was able to easily break off chunks of the brick to be hydrated.
