Upon opening the box, all I heard was gasps from the young ones. They have been talking about checking out the stars for weeks. Having a telescope, for a beginner, is exactly what this item is. Carefully taking out the pieces, they were able to put it together in only a few minutes and read for the night sky to peak for their peering eyes. Unpacking the box, it was carefully put together so you could figure out what piece goes where. Additionally, the instruction manual is very helpful and offers details on how to assemble it, explanation on the different eyepieces and how to adjust the finder scope. After the unit was put together, there were additional materials on what to look for in the sky. It was an overview for the kids to understand what they might see for the first time and it was written very well for beginner understanding. The cool aspect about this telescope is how the science is being explained as the telescope is being put together. The parts are simple enough to comprehend how all the pieces coming together make the refractor telescope work. Looking at the individual pieces, they appear to be well made, the pieces are securely fastened with a screw-type lock and it's easy to interchange the parts as needed to see the sky better. While the box and unit is outstanding, one minor concern I have is how to keep all the pieces together. I know this telescope will be heavily used and I want to make sure nothing is lost. The box will only last for so long (plus the kids are hard on everything) so am going to need a case.I recommend if you do decide on this unit, that you get a case at the same time for ultimate convenience of keeping all the eye pieces and such together when not in use. ... show more

It is hard to find focus but once you do it is good. Also you are seeing things upside down on the small scope. Would’ve been nice to have a little carrying case for the extra lenses.

The thing to keep in mind with this telescope is that it’s for kids and basically a toy. It isn’t high quality with the best image of the stars and moon that money can buy. That said, it’s a pretty nice telescope to get kids acquainted with astronomy and how telescopes work and if/when they break it, I won’t have a fortune invested in it. If they show a real interest and are mature enough to care for a more expensive telescope, then I’ll feel good about spending the extra cash for a better one. The instructions give basic assembly instructions but uses terminology that a beginner would not necessarily know but it wasn’t overly difficult to put together, you just have to pay attention. While the instructions don’t do the greatest job of explaining how to put it together, I thought it did a great job of explaining magnification, how to use the telescope, scope adjustment and what to look for in the sky. It comes with 3 eyepieces with 3 different magnifications, 18x, 29x & 90X and it also comes with an erecting eyepiece. I had no idea what that was, but the directions explained that the telescope is dual purpose, it can be used for astronomy as well as viewing objects on land which is what the erecting eyepiece is for. It also comes with a moon mirror. Again, I had no idea what that was, but it turns out that it helps sharpen surface details by removing the reflected glare when observing the full moon. The kit also comes with nice poster graphics of the moon and a star map. I got this telescope for my 5 and 7 year old who had been asking for a telescope with grand ideas they were going to see the stars, moon and planets with ease. That was not really what we got here. First off we live in a fairly rural area so there isn't much in terms of light pollution and on clear nights you can see the moon well all on its own right through our tall living room windows. That being said when my five year old opened this up(without my knowledge or help) on a full moon night and tried to put it together, she was pretty disappointed she couldn't see anything. It took a lot of finagling to get things focused and it seemed like our crosshairs in the lenses were broken. The tiny tripod made it hard to get at an angle that we could actually see anything. We put it on a chair, tried it on a box on a table, which made it hard for the kids to actually see into the eye piece. We tried going outside wondering if the glass from the window was causing distortion but that was difficult to even find the moon. Also, it seems SUPER sensitive to even the slightest movement. Just having the cat walk by had the whole lens jiggling out of focus. Maybe we didn't put it together right? When we finally were able to get it focused I didn't feel like it magnified the moon any better than the kid binoculars we have. Overall, it seemed promising with all the extra lenses, but we were a little underwhelmed. ... show more

I have lived at my house for going on 10 years and I have never seen the bell of the church near us as I did with this telescope! I saw so much detail like I was standing right next to it it was incredible. In the daytime, everything is great to see and the kids loved looking up into the trees to try to spot birds. At night it was harder to focus on the moon because of light pollution but we still could see it after much playing around with it. There is a learning curve and my husband and friend spent a lot of time playing with it at night trying to see the moon closer but they had a good time and the kids eventually got to use it too. I do recommend this telescope just be aware that there is a learning curve and you may need to help your kiddos with the magnification. ... show more
