  • Guilt Ridden 2016 GMC Canyon SLT Quad Cab 4.5 stars.
Size: 5' 3" Bed Pattern Name: TruXport
When the time comes to make a bed cover purchase and you survey the field of possibilities you quickly come tor realize, it's a jungle out there. You really need to read the reviews to help get oriented as I did. So, my conscience won't let me avoid offering a review of my own so here's my guilt relief. Full disclosure: I am a semi-retired Auto and Truck Master Technician with over 35 years of experience presently working as a maintenance process analyst for the 4th largest fleet of vehicles in the world and still maintain over $100,000.00 worth of Snap-On tools. Trust me, you are not going to need much of that experience or tools to install this item. The instructions, some common sense, and a 1/2" or 13mm wrench of any configuration will make it happen. So, why this type of bed cover for this truck? Aesthetically, in my opinion, the holy grail of bed covers is a hard, fiberglass cover gel coated to match. They just look fantastic. It changes the look of the vehicle completely. Practically speaking, in my opinion, they are near useless especially on the 5' bed of a mid-size truck. You have to be 6'7" and 85lbs to snake your way under the cover to reach anything in the front of the bed and even then you can't get it out without sliding it back where there is sufficient clearance between the bed cap and the open cover. I had one on the Dakota Quad Cab this Canyon replaced. Loved the look, hated the function. Second place goes to the Painted to Match folding versions. Look great but, they fold plunging down into the bed. If you are full of cargo, it's not plunging anywhere. The option is to remove it, (not as easy as the video looks) and leave it home. If you're not home, it goes in the back seat. Now you have a 2 seater. Might as well be a Corvette. Your crew needs to ride in another vehicle. Now you're riding in a Pick-Up hauling cargo with no bed cover. Pray for sun. Almost all the folding versions use up space and on the 5' canyon bed, space is precious. Roll-up vinyl is the sweet spot here for me. Easy to install, easy to operate, doesn't deprive me of bed space and doesn't impede back window visibility. Of course, not painted to match but, my truck is Switch-Blade silver so the rich black color compliments the vehicle nicely. Because I still had some trepidation over whether I was making a good decision, I must admit, it was the price of this one that played the biggest part in drawing me in. Not much risk if it's a clunker. My first disappointment was with Amazon. First look of the item shows one price and when it goes into the cart there is a different price and, of course, it was higher otherwise, why mention it. Not much higher but, c'mon kids, stop that. Can't take stars off the product for that. Although the shipping was lightening fast, the box arrived severely broken. It was detached all the way through 1/3 off one end and appeared to have been hastily taped up by a visually impaired 5 year old with worse A.D.D. than mine. No stars off for the brutality of remedial shippers. Normally I would only open the box enough to get the instructions/paperwork out. This time, I took everything out (or so I thought) to examine the contents. Luckily, everything survived the trauma. Yes I am an experienced technician but, I am a stickler for Manuals, Directions, Instructions so a failure is on them, not me. I am all too familiar with their short-comings because they're complied by engineers, composed by sales engineers and peppered with stupid by the safety engineers. Apparently none of us are independently capable of getting through the most mundane of tasks and not end up in the emergency room or cemetery without their guidance. Then the lawyers get the document and take out everything you really need to know. Nevertheless, I always skim the instructions, read them, read them again and follow them closely throughout the installation process. It didn't take me any more or less time than most of the responsible reviewers here, about 35 minutes. Like most instructions, these could have been better but, they were adequate and worth following. I used the grooves in the bed caps as points of reference to center the cover which was the only tricky part and the rest was straight forward. Here's where the half star comes off. I rolled it up to attach the two straps that secure it and, there was only one strap. One very cheesy strap. Very cheesy strap. Part of the ease of installation is that this product is well made with quality that exceeds the price. The lack of quality on the securing strap is way out of character. I don't understand that. True, the securing requirement really doesn't ask much of the strap and I suppose it should last a while but, I was on a roll with satisfaction up to that point. I am very impressed with the latching mechanism. The instructions say it doesn't need any adjustment and that is true. It works perfectly without messing with it although you may be tempted to tinker around tweaking what doesn't need tweaking before getting used to working it. It almost seems violent releasing it. Follow the instructions on how to do it and leave the adjustment alone. The method for tightening it up and smoothing it out works too. It looks great. The profile is a bit high but, I know I would be spending a lot more to do a little better. The instructions said that the cover will tighten up more when the sun hit it. Here in Arizona, that is counter intuitive. The dangerous sun here makes things soft and gooey. Sure enough though, as soon as the mighty Arizona sun hit this cover it tightened up like Gene Krupa's snare. I was sure that the cross bars would shadow through the vinyl but, they don't. You can't tell they are there. With some careful placement managing, I think you could carry a light load on top of it if you could figure out how to secure it. Other questions are the seal and security. As it happened, as soon as I installed it, we had some unusual days of rain here in the desert. No leaks. I took it through a waggle style car wash and, again, no leaks. I finally got a bit of water in the bed going through a high-pressure touch-less car wash. Not enough to do any real damage to cargo and I'm not expecting any hard driving horizontal rains here. I believe the seal is dependent on the installer's attention to detail. Security? It's a roll-up vinyl cover. It's not a nuke proof gun safe princess. It can be cut open and will largely just deter those who would be tempted with visibility. It keeps the honest, honest and puts a check in the 'attractive-nuisance" box. My method is to leave the tailgate un-locked when the bed is empty so the real skel-divers can see it's empty and likely won't carve up my cover to find out it is. Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase. The cover was simple to install, looks good, functions as it should and didn't break the bank. I'm confident that, with some routine care, it should last the life of the vehicle. The post script is; When I cut up the box to fit it in the Recycle Bin, guess what I found! The other cheesy strap! It must have slid off the head rail and fell in the packing material. To get in on, I will have to remove and re-install the whole mishpucka. I threw it in the glove box and will live without it until I am so mind-numbingly bored I'll repeat the process. The caution here is, make sure both cheese straps are on the head rail before installing. Otherwise, I can highly recommend this product. ... show more

  • Great quality and fits well.
Size: 5' 3" Bed Pattern Name: TruXport
First of all, I wish I didn’t procrastinate so much before finally buying this tonneau cover. It has been well worth the investment. I purchased it prior to a long distance trip with the intention it would reduce wind drag and hopefully provide better fuel economy. That’s exactly what it did. I had almost 2mpg better fuel mileage overall for the trip. With gas prices these days, I really couldn’t complain. Pros: - fair price to quality ratio (high quality) - very easy installation - improved mileage - provides excellent protection from rain - clean look Cons: - don’t have any criticism yet. If I find anything worth noting as time goes on I’ll add an update ... show more

  • Easy install, holds up well
Size: 5' 3" Bed w/ Sport Bar Pattern Name: Lo Pro
I wanted a tonneau cover for my truck but finding one that fits with the sports bar limited my options. GM makes one, but Truxedo makes one for $50 less so I went with this one. I can confirm that it works well with the sports bar installed. The hardest part of the installation was getting the weather stripping behind the sports bar inner support. Without the sports bar, this probably would have been 30 minutes worth of work. I can't stress enough to read the instructions carefully before doing the install. The instructions are a little disjointed and the images used aren't always the easiest to look at it. But if you follow them to the letter things should go smoothly. It fits snugly, the velcro keeps it in place even at highway speeds, and rolling it open is a breeze. This is not a sturdy cover, mind you. It's basically just a tarp with a couple of support bars going across the width of the bed so don't rest anything heavy on top of it. But it protects the bed and contents from the elements and keeps it from blowing out which is all I'm looking for. Mission accomplished. ... show more

  • Well made tonneau cover
Size: 5' 3" Bed Pattern Name: TruXport
So many choices when it comes to covering your truck bed. Hard top, soft top? Folding or roll up? Raised or flush? It depends what's important to you and how much you're willing to spend. Personally, I wanted to be able to put stuff in my truck bed and not worry about people grabbing it when I'm parked somewhere. Which is pretty much the main reason anybody wants a tonneau cover, duh. But my other requirement was I wanted to have full access to the uncovered bed on demand without having to remove pieces and put them somewhere else as well as not blocking visibility. And that pretty much limits you to a rolling soft top. A hard shell may hinge up but you have to take it off and leave it somewhere for full bed access. Folding tonneau covers will give you access to 2/3 or 3/4 of the bed but to get all of it you either need to take it off or flip it up so it blocks the rear window. But a rolling tonneau cover quickly rolls up and secures against the back of the cab without obstructing the view or the bed access. But is it secure? You cannot access the latches without opening the tailgate so if your tailgate is locked then yes. But the velcro sides? This model has a preset tension that is tight enough that you'd have a very hard time trying to reach in from the sides, much less take anything out. But it's a fabric top, someone could just cut it? Yes they could, nothing's completely secure. Give me a minute with a good pry bar and that fancy hardshell cap is just as vulnerable. The key is it conceals the contents - nobody knows if there's anything in there and, if so, if it's worth the effort to steal. And then it takes extra effort to get in there, unusual effort that would stand out to passersby, and that's not worth the risk for an unknown payoff. It's a deterrent, and as a deterrent it works just as well as a much more expensive hard cap. That said, what about this model specifically? I found the instructions pretty easy and the installation pretty simple with minimal tools needed and no drilling. For those concerned about watertightness, having properly followed the instructions I've been in a number of storms so far without a leak. It's easy to store and deploy. It does sit above the top edge of the truck bed but I'm fine with that - they have a "low profile" model that doesn't look like is worth the higher price for the minimal lower height while flush options are more cumbersome, expensive, and may be more prone to leaking. My only complaint is how it lines up with the outside contour of the truck bed lip. The inside lip is perfectly rectangular and this cover follows that shape, perfectly rectangular. But the outside contour is wider near the cab (2016 Colorado) than near the tailgate so aesthetically it's a little odd. Also, the stake holes, which are meant to be used as handholds, end up halfway covered, looks strange. You can get some stake hole caps here to solve that, just put them in before you install the tonneau cover. And if you leave them open, they still work as handholds, though a tight fit. Overall I've been satisfied with the purchase. ... show more
