  • Bent piece of metal with some holes and a black finish.
This is a basic item, just stamped, folded metal with a finish applied to it, but, well... For the most part, it's done right. For anyone that has tried to rack mount SOHO broadband network equipment such as cable / dsl modems, and broadband / WiFi routers, you know the frustration of having to use a shelf in the first place since the MFGs assume everyone buying a cable modem for example, will just place it on a desktop. (WRONG!). I have two of these that I use for my home network, which is somewhat complex as I am a Linux adminsitrator by trade, and I run my own Linux cluster and iSCSI SAN for training purposes (I maintain a training lab at home). One of these holds my Zoom 5341J cable modem, Buffalo WZR-600DHP N600 router, and a 3TB USB HDD that I am using for a DNLA server. The second I use for a pair of TrendNet TEG-S80G 8 port desktop gigabit switches and my Obi100 VoIP adapter. Likewise the sound and video guys / gals have equipment they need racked up but that isn't offered in a rackable format. This shelf can help if it is light weight enough. Pros: - Sturdy, sufficiently thick gauge metal to hold anything you would want to store on such a shelf. - Sized perfectly to work with a 12 inch deep wall mounted relay rack. - Perforated base allows for airflow to any mounted items. - Perforated base allows velcro strips to be run through to secure items to the shelf to keep the from sliding around. Also useful for mounting transformer blocks up and out of the way. - Accurate hole placement, with well slotted holes allowing for sloppy racks. - Reasonably well executed, attractive finish. - Well protected / packaged. Cons: - Weight capacity somewhat limited by design (no rolled lip from side to side). I am not taking a star for that because, well I didn't WANT a heavy duty shelf. That is a different thing. I wanted one to hold light electronics and offered perforations improving breathing, but sacrificing structural rigidity somewhat. So don't go trying to put that big old UPS on this thing unless you want to watch stamped steel get a hernia... - Likewise, the shelf itself can be a bit bowed right out of the box. Not something you might notice initially, but on the shelf my switches are on, there is a noticeable bow, probably 1/8" overall, which is acceptable for my purposes, but not ideal. - The Finish on the shelves does NOT like having screws run in and out against it. I did some adjustment, moving things on and off the rack until I found where I wanted things, and by that time, the finish around the screw holes on one of the shelves had started peeling off. VERY disappointing. Overall I am happy enough with these. I took 2 stars off of my initial review down to 3 after fiddling with them for a while due to the bowing and the flaking finish. I expect these to stand up to many years of use doing what they are meant to do. Just sit there and have stuff lay on them. These could be, and really should be much better. It's such a simple item that the flaws are things that really shouldn't be overlooked by the manufacturer. ... show more

  • Great for my need
This worked out great for my need, which was to install a wifi router into the back of my rack. I am using hook-and-loop in two directions to secure the router in. I can still plug Ethernet cables in (you would likely be down 1 port, maybe 2 if you use multiple straps in that direction with certain placement). ... show more

  • Great little shelf
I've used many of these shelves over the years in closet spaces. I've probably used more of them by just mounting to walls than using with a rack. Hit a stud with one side and then just use wall anchors on the other side. Can't ever go wrong with hanging one in a IT closet just to have a place to store a couple of things on. ... show more

  • sturdy shelf
It's a shelf, so not much to say. The gauge (thickness) of the metal is adequate to hold up audio/computer equipment. This is the slotted one, so that affects the strength slightly. Looks like they make one the same size that isn't slotted, so if I need a stronger one down the line, I would try that as well. The powdercoating on the one I got is flawless, and all the holes and slots are perfect with no bad bends or places anywhere on it. So overall I am giving it a five star becasue I have nothing to complain about. The box it came in was strong enough on its own to ship it in, but wholy cow the Amazon shipping department went overboard with an extra box over the first box, plus all sorts of plastic padding. UPS must be beating the crap out of their boxes or something, or they need to refine their packing system. I told them to combine my order too, but they didn't. That is beside the point, though -- bottom line, this is a good shelf for the money. ... show more

  • Does the job
This product does what it is supposed to do. However, when installed you can't use the same U slot that it is installed in for another purpose. I was hoping to install my TRENDnet 24-Port Cat5/5e Unshielded Patch Panel, TC-P24C5E in the same top U slot that this shelf was installed in to maximize the available slots in my Monoprice 4U 7(H) x 19(W) x 12(D) Inches Wall Mount Bracket (108627) . Unfortunately, when the shelf is installed it is just slightly too narrow to allow me to mount both items to the same slot. It might work better with a different patch panel or other rack mounted component. It is only 10" deep which is perfect for allowing cords to route behind it and into the 12" deep rack. ... show more

  • Good but a little shallow
This works, but it is shallower than I expected. That ultimately is on me for not checking measurements but be sure to check.

  • Great Product for the Price - No Hardware Included
Product looks and works great. I purchased (4) of them to hold non-rack mounted modems, firewalls, etc. For what you get, its hard to be the price of these. The finish on the shelf is really nice. The shelf is a light-duty shelf but it will hold all i put on it with no problem. My only complaint is that they DO NOT come with screws. So make sure you have some laying around ahead of time or add them to your Amazon order. Otherwise you will be disappointed when these arrive. 4 out of 5 because they did not come with the (4) screws Will buy more in the near future now that I know how well they work. ... show more

  • Basic rack mount tray that can be used to hold non-rack mountable equipment.
These trays are pretty simple; they hold stuff and they have holes in them. I purchased 3 of them to clean up my equipment rack. I have a number of components (Roku, FireTV, switch, cable modem, router, etc.) that do have rack mounting holes, so I used these trays to either zip tie or screw in the pieces. For everything that I screwed in (cable modem, router, switch), I had to Dremel some of the slots to get the position correct. This isn't the fault of the shelves, just don't expect the holes to line up if you're trying to do what I did. I'm considering another one as the extra ventilation isn't a bad thing for the other components I have in my rack. ... show more
