I purchased this rack for my home theater and have had it for close to two weeks now. I purchased the 42U, 17" deep version. I don’t write a ton of reviews, but I really had a hard time choosing a rack, so I wanted to write this to help anyone else out that is shopping for a budget rack for AV/Home Theater equipment. My constraints were budget (many enclosed home theater racks easily get into the $1k+ territory, and I am sure they can go way up from there)and size (I wanted it to be shallow so I could easily get behind it and so that I could push it out of the way in the close that it is in. I didn’t need it to be enclosed or attractive – it resides in a closet/storage room that is adjacent to my theater. There were a couple of things that could be better, but overall, this is a phenomenal value that I would highly recommend. My only two complaints are that the directions were not good (others have mentioned this) and that the casters are too small. That being said, I have never built a rack before, but I was still able to assemble in an hour or two (which involved me disassembling a couple of the parts due to mistakes) - so don't let the crappy directions scare you off. I just want to point out that the directions aren't clear and the parts don't entirely match the pictures in the directions. It would be great if the vendor would creation better instructions. Regarding the casters, while they are usable, it would be great if they were larger to allow the rack to roll on carpet better. They would probably be fine on a hard surface, but they aren't great on carpet. However, at $240, it is hard to complain. Even with those two concerns, I still rate this 5 stars. Regarding the specific size that I purchase, I was really torn between the 17" deep and one of the deeper versions for my home theater application. I was really concerned that 17" wouldn't be deep enough, but I also wanted it to be shallow enough that I could move it around and easily get behind it in the space I have for it. I eventually went with the 17” deep version since that is about the deepest that any of my equipment is, and it turns out that 17" is PLENTY deep enough and all the equipment I have easily fits. If you have more space and want to go deeper, I am sure that is fine, but I am not sure I would go deeper even if there was more space – this depth makes it easy to access the rear of the various devices. There is a possible drawback to this depth, and that is that it can get top heavy if you load up the heavy equipment too high up. I did this initially, but was able to alleviate the issue by moving the heavy amps lower down. This would be less of an issue for front to back stability in a deeper rack, and I also believe that if the 17” rack was on a hard surface this would be less of an issue or if the casters were larger– the small casters on carpet makes the rack hard to roll, and easier to tip over. I reorganized the rack so that the heavy equipment is low and the lighter equipment is higher up, and now it isn’t a tipping hazard. Being that this is my first experience with a rack, I appreciated that it came with mounting hardware… I know some reviews mentioned that it was low quality, but it works for me. It claims 950lbs capacity, I filled it with 750 lbs and is is great! I loaded it with 6 LiFEPO4 5120 WH Trophy Batteries at 100 lbs ea, then attached the 160 lb inverter to the side. Wired it all together using heavy gage copper cables, Buss bars, etc. rolled it across the garage to the electrical box and connected it all in along with the solar panels. Full functioning system now runs all the non-large loads in the house. Going to double this and run it all. Could not do it so elegantly without this rack system. Only issue was I needed to make some covers over electrical connection areas for safety, I used 1/4" plastic sheets. To hold this weight, I had to make extra aluminum 1.5" angles for the server rack batteries and attached all the angles with upgraded 1/4-20 bolts/nuts/lock washers. On the rear, I added a couple all thread 1/4-20 rods across the back because if I was moving this huge sucker around, I did not want the rear to open up at all. Worked Perfect!

So, as most of the other reviews mention, assembly can be difficult. Very importantly (as not many people include this), I bought the 15U model. My assembly time was about an hour or so trying to figure out how to orient everything and making sure things were square, etc. I've provided some assembly notes at the bottom. The quality of the rack seems to be pretty good in terms of build. The powder coat seems to be better than stuff I've received commercially and none of the parts feel cheap or flimsy at all to me. Once assembled, you do need to either have a shelf in the top or install one of the sets of "rails" they provide to help everything keep its shape when you begin moving it. The included "rails" are marginally useless for things like a 1U server because the wings on them aren't wide enough. My 1U HP server just barely sits on them and if it is moved, it falls off them because there's too much space left over on either side. I should probably have proper rails for it but, as a home labber, I think we all know that's not often the case. Also, if you're going to work around this rack with bare feet, TAKE CAUTION. I busted my big toe on the front part where the casters stick out several times trying to walk around it in a narrow space. Maybe some pool noodles to cover. Otherwise, I'm satisfied. Assembly notes: - Tools you need: Drill, framer's square, adjustable wrench (or just use your fingers to hold the nuts while drilling because you really can't exactly fit a wrench into the small space anyway), Philips bit for drill, M6 bit for drill (WHY did they use these?) - Other things you need: Another person, some straps, or something to help you when you install the included "rails". I used a six year-old. - The diagram included is pretty awful but mine was usable enough for me to see what I'm doing. - Do take care to use the lowest speed setting for your drill and set the power/clutch to something like 1/3 the power. I have a Ryobi drill so I used speed 1 with power setting 8 and this seemed sufficient enough to lock things together without the risk of stripping most things (see note about M6 screws though :(). - The pieces that connect the front and back vertical pieces to the lower portion with casters go on the outside of the vertical pieces. This wasn't clear and apparently, of the two pieces like this included, they very specifically fit the front and back (but are unlabeled this way). I couldn't interchange them. I didn't know this though so I fought with one for a bit and finally just tried the other which fit like a glove. - Nothing about this design ensures that your frame will come out square in any way when you're building it. Check it with an actual framer's square while you assemble (as best you can; some of the parts just make this hard). - Take care not to strip-out the M6 screws that go on the bottom. I had an appropriate bit but there was not much meat on the sidewalls of the screw's M6 portion and so I stripped two of them (even with my drill clutch set low).

Really wanted an enclosed rack, but couldn’t find anything reasonably priced for home use that was large enough. (Mine is combined Network and Theater). This is much better quality than I was expecting at the price. Plus perfect depth for home use vs server room.

Echoing previous comments on this rack. It's sturdy alright, but the instructions for the two base pieces could use significant improvement. All I needed to know is that the two diagonal holes need to be facing the front and the back. A simple label on these two pieces would be tremendously helpful. Casters are fine for the likes of a ceramic tile or concrete floor, but are horrible on carpet. This setup could definitely benefit from larger caster wheels.
