I bought the R36MAX retro game console for my son for his birthday and he was super delighted from the first moment. I didn't have super high expectations for this unit since there are about 30 companies advertising almost the identical unit loaded with similar ROMs. I chose the R36MAX for it's larger 4" screen compared to the other competitor's 3.5 inch screen. The hardware looks nice, but is VERY cheap and plastic when in hand. My unit actually rattles if you shake it slightly. I don't know if that's loose buttons or something came free inside. The system booted up just fine, but is complicated to operate. There is a built in user manual, which is nice, but a LOT of button combos to memorize in order to do anything. Used regularly this may be OK, but this isn't something to play for a bit, put away for a while and immediately are productive when you pick it up again. Just getting the games to start was a challenge as it's not obvious what buttons to push. The big problem I had was playability. I tried 10 random games to see how the system worked. 3 would load then crash once started. 2 wouldn't load at all. 2 loaded but were sideways on the screen (couldn't figure out how to undo that), and 3 worked just fine. A 30% success rate isn't going to work for me. If you google the system, there are instructions on how to wipe it, install a more stable OS, and suggestions to redownload all the games. No thanks. I don't want to put that much time into it. The unit isn't worth the headache.

Surprisingly good, with a few minor flaws. I'll start with the good: the screen is bright and crisp, and the game selection is larger than I expected, with lots of quality game options. I've tried a few of them, and they played flawlessly. I'm incredibly pleased, and very happy I got this instead of a Switch 2. For flaws, the back L1/2 R1/2 buttons are slightly loose, and the central button is as well. Since most of the games don't use those, it's not a real issue. Also, the side buttons could be a little easier to press, but they're inset and rarely used, so again, not a real issue. I found the UI very intuitive, but suspect loading more games would take a bit of fiddling to get right.
