  • For Splitting Smaller Sizes for Kindling Wood
This unit can split smaller (7 inches or less diameter) wood logs that are softer types of wood well enough and would have given it 3 stars for this, but for the $70 price tag I do not feel it can compete with many others that accommodate larger sizes of wood and have a sharper blade for a similar price. This unit was much lighter than I expected and comes unassembled, using headless allen screws/socket set screws to attach the pieces together using a provided allen wrench. It came nicely packaged. Once assembled it is clear this is mostly for smaller pieces of wood and should work well for those interested in making smaller pieces for kindling. This unit will not be able to be used to breakup larger pieces of wood but the listing clearly states this is for 7" diameter pieces so I cannot fault the unit for that, just something to be aware of. The fact that it is lighter and smaller than many can be a bonus to some as you are able to move it and manipulate it. Due to having to use smaller sized wood I didn't have any issues with stability either. While I was able to split some very dry avocado wood logs we had without too much issue, it was a bit more work (an extra striker or two) to split all the way and in some cases (for moderate to longer logs) had to finish splitting by pulling apart with my hands since the logs were longer than the top of the splitter. This wasn't a huge deal but does add a bit of time. Certainly usable if you are only splitting a small amount of wood at a time, but for large quantities probably not what I would use. The blade is not sharp to touch, so good for safety, but does come to a point enough to split the wood. The primary issue for me is that the opening restricts the wood I was able to split. I was not able to breakdown the larger pieces in my pile but was able to use this to successfully breakdown some of the smaller logs into kindling pieces which is how I will use it going forward. Additionally, any moderately to severely curved logs will cause you grief too as they have a good chance of getting wedged/stuck in the ring depending on the intensity of the curve. As for build quality, everything fit together nicely, but I must say it does not feel as solid as others I have used. Being multiple pieces instead of a single solid unit will likely not be as robust over time. It is very light and over time I suspect the elements will rust this out quickly as nothing is mentioned about being rust proof although they do provide a canvas bag to protect it from the elements. suspect this is to allow the unit to last longer if kept outdoors. Ultimately, if you are looking for a unit to split up larger logs that is solid and can be kept outdoors in the elements then this is not an option. However, if you are looking to split smaller logs into kindling sized pieces this can work well for your needs. The unit is light and small so doesn't take up a lot of room and easy to move where you need so you could store it in a shed or garage to keep it out of the elements. ... show more

  • Easiest way to make kindling
Just spent an hour outside turning cut and seasoned wood into kindling. This product work so much better than most other products I've seen. It is not lightweight, which means it is more likely to last. I spent less than 2 minutes to assemble it, with all parts included, and about that time using included screws to mount the splitter to a large stump for stability. It's a good idea to do, because there are many force at play when splitting logs, and this splitter will not stay upright if it is not screwed down. While I did not have quite as easy a time as the woman in the seller's video, I did find the product easy enough to use while splitting fir branches with a hand sledge. The powder coat on the metal frame really hangs in there, and I see no evidence that anything is going to rust any time soon. The reason I picked this one up, though, is because my other splitter and wedges are for bigger limbs and pieces of the trunk and weigh a lot more. I like the carrying bag, and intend to take this with me the next time I go camping. ... show more

  • Works on soft wood.
This is a nice addition to the camping tool set. It does come apart if needed but the included travel bag is big enough to hold it put together. Make sure you keep the bags for the small screws in it if you do take it apart as those will get lost very quick. Used it on half a dozen pieces of wood. Found when I was done the screws had come loose just a bit. Keep that allen wrench handy in that bag too. It would be better if it came with tent pegs, but most campers have those. Wish it had four holes in the feet, instead of just two, to anchor it more securely, especially with tent pegs. Unless you travel with a flat level wooden base the big screws won’t be as useful. Also does not work on very hard wood. I had a hardwood piece that it only scored the bottom a bit. It is wobbly without securing it so you will have to hold the log with one hand and the hammer with the other. ... show more

  • Nice collapsible option but...
Decent powder coating. It's a nice addition to my camper cargo especially since it's collapsible but...the drawback is the hardware used for assembly isn't quick release (you have to use an allen wrench) I question how long these little screws will hold up to the elements. I added a photo of the quick release hitch pins (last photo) that would make this product more functional and superior for convenience values and price factor they'd just have to beef up the connection points to drill holes through for them. I've used them for 150lb. Motorcycle sunroof systems on a slingshot and if they're stainless steel they're badass. I'll be coming back asap to update after testing it out I'm in Florida so don't have firewood readily available since it's still 100° and up right now. I will say the storage bag is a nice touch. I'll probably just tape the allen wrench to the frame for now to have easy access to it. ... show more

  • Not bad
This thing is better suited to splitting smaller logs, mainly because the blade ships with less sharpness as a old straight head screwdriver.. I’m sure if the blade were sharpened this could split larger logs but I use it and like it as is. Great for camping. I had wondered if it is foldable or easily disassembled for storage. It is not. It is held together with four little 3/16” long allen head set screws. Comes with the wrench. I used locktite on these since they would otherwise easily work loose or work their way out. Comes with what looked like a decent storage bag but that bag has no handles. It has a thin drawstring that is very difficult to close. All in all, I would buy this again. ... show more
