Features

  • FILTRATION: Purigen ranges in color from almost white (cream) to light yellow. Seachem Purigen is not a mixture of ion exchangers or adsorbents, but a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water.
  • SELECTIVITY: Seachem Purigen is an organic filtration resin that works hard to remove nitrogenous compounds and waste produced by fish, corals, and even plants, making your water crystal clear.
  • CAPACITY: Being both spherical and macroreticular, Seachem Purigen has microscopic pores that increase its usable surface area to many times that of a purely spherical resin.
  • REGENERATION: Once Seachems Purigen is exhausted, it can be regenerated with a solution of bleach and water. The bleach will literally burn off the organics that have been removed from the tank.
  • SAFETY: Some slime coat products may permanently foul Purigen and render regeneration difficult. Do not reuse if odor of bleach/chlorine is detectable. In case of doubt, soak beads in small quantity of water and test for residual chlorine with a chlorine test kit.

  • Powerful Combo for Crystal-Clear, Healthy Water
The Purigen & Matrix Bio Media (250ml) combo is one of the most effective upgrades you can make to any aquarium filtration system. Purigen does an incredible job at removing discoloration, organics, and impurities — the water becomes noticeably clearer within a short time, often looking “polished.” It regenerates easily, too, which makes it cost-effective in the long run. Matrix is equally impressive. Its highly porous structure provides excellent surface area for beneficial bacteria, helping stabilize ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. It’s reliable, long-lasting, and works well in virtually any filter setup. Together, these two products create a powerful filtration solution that supports both water clarity and biological stability. If you want cleaner, healthier water and a more stable tank ecosystem, this pairing is a fantastic choice. Highly recommended for freshwater and marine hobbyists alike! ... show more

  • Sparkling clear water with Purigen
Seachem Purigen is an absolute game-changer for keeping aquarium water crystal clear! I simply place it in my filter, and it attracts and locks in tannins, preventing that unwanted yellow or brown tint in the water. This is especially useful for tanks with driftwood or other organic materials that release tannins over time. One of the best things about Purigen is how long-lasting and reusable it is. Unlike traditional chemical filtration media, it can be recharged with bleach and used multiple times, making it a cost-effective solution for maintaining pristine water clarity. Since using Purigen, I’ve noticed a dramatic improvement in water quality, and my fish seem happier and more vibrant. It doesn’t strip out beneficial minerals like carbon does, which is another big plus. If you're struggling with discolored or murky water, I highly recommend Seachem Purigen. It’s an easy, effective, and reliable way to keep your aquarium looking its best! ... show more

  • purigen
Works great, but they should give better instructions on how much to use for tank size. I think I used too much. But no problems yet.

  • You've never seen the color "clear."
I preach the Gospel of Purigen. I used to work for a high-end custom aquarium installation and maintenance company with a sterling reputation and worldwide recognition within the industry for the quality of their work. Many of their installations were in multi-million dollar homes and businesses where perfection was the only option. Purigen went in every filter if the client's aquarium had A) driftwood or B) could be viewed from more than one side (in which case ANY lack of clarity becomes far more visible). We began using it in most freshwater installations when its virtues became evident. It's an absolute must for removing tannin in any tank with driftwood. You've never seen the color "clear" if you've not used Purigen. It's a clarity that's almost tactile. It's a whole new thing. A couple of usage notes: First, don't skimp on something that is meant to be beautiful. Buy "The Bag" sold by Seachem specifically for this finely granulated miracle. It's reusable and you'll go through a lot of hassle by trying to get around this inexpensive purchase but with far less success. Second, while Purigen is miraculous, it can't fix inexperience, ignorance, or poor taste. If your tank is under-filtered, poorly designed, overstocked, over-fed, or contains dumb fish (freshwater parrots, for instance), you don't deserve this product. Go fix your life. Make your aquarium what it's supposed to be: study good aquarium design, hide the wires and plumbing (or use glassware), do your regular water changes, clean the glass properly, worship at the altar of Takashi Amano, and then, when people who don't care about aquariums go, "Wow, that's stunning," THEN buy Purigen and fully understand that water can look clearer than air. ... show more

  • Goldfish
I have two goldfish in a 20 gallon and the bio load was ridiculous. My parms were off the charts. Ammonia and Nitrate was so high I was doing partial water changes daily to keep up. I was using ceramic, charcoal, and sponge in an Aqua Clear 30. Water was always cloudy. So I bought a nylon sock from the store and filled it with about 4 tablespoons of Purigen. I now run ceramic, Purigen, with a small amount of charcoal in a separate bag under the nylon, and foam. The first day I didn't notice a difference in cloudiness but I did notice my fish were more active. My fancy tail which usually just stayed at the top was swimming about. The next day when I woke up it was magic. I had some algae on my plants, it was literally peeling off in sheets! The water was not cloudy at all! Day three, filter sucked up sheet algae that was shloffing off and my water was so clear I could see the glass on the outside needed cleaning! So I did a water test. Ammonia 0, Nitrates, 0, Nitrates under 10ppm. That is almost a complete 360! My fish are happy, my plants are happy, I am happy. Please note, when I bought this I also changed from AquaSafe to Prime. Purigen will need to be recharged every couple of months. Using bleach then Prime. I also added Prime to my Goldfish tank when switching to Purigen. Both are made by Seachem. I can not say 100% if it was my just using the Purigen or if it was the two together that changed my tank. I highly suggest both in unison. Now using in my nano with the same results. Will be using in my SW tank as well. I did not buy their "The Bag" instead opting for a white nylon you can buy at Walmart or the like. ... show more

  • A Game-Changer for Clear Water!
I can't say enough good things about Purigen. I bought some wood that was leaching a lot of tannins and turning my aquarium water yellow. I was dreading the long, tedious process of constantly washing the wood to get rid of it. But instead, I decided to give Purigen a try, and I'm SO glad I did! It worked wonders – my water is now crystal clear, and the yellow tint is completely gone. The best part? I've bleached and reused the Purigen multiple times with great success! It continues to perform just as well as it did when I first used it. This product is a total lifesaver, and I highly recommend it to anyone struggling with water discoloration. It's a must-have in my aquarium maintenance routine now. I love it! ... show more
