Description

Protect marine fish and invertebrates from unsafe water conditions with API SALTWATER MASTER TEST KIT. Fish waste, uneaten food, plant refuse and other organic compounds can create harmful levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as well as cause drastic fluctuations in pH. These unhealthy conditions can result in fish stress, gill and tissue damage and even death. The API SALTWATER MASTER TEST KIT accurately measures these four saltwater parameters that are key to keeping your aquarium healthy. It includes six bottles of liquid test reagent, four glass test tubes with snap-tight caps, a holding tray and a step-by-step instruction booklet with information on how to correct unsafe water conditions. Simply fill a clean test tube with 5 ml of water, add the appropriate test drops and compare results with the color chart. Then follow the recommendations to modify conditions if action is needed. With API Aquarium products, it’s easy to keep a beautiful saltwater, freshwater or reef aquarium. • Accurate test that takes around 10 minutes to do
Style: Freshwater
The media could not be loaded. I recently bought my first fish tank, Tetra ColorFusion 20 Gallon Aquarium Kit , and quickly learnt about the importance of testing the water. In case you do not know, a new fish tank needs to go through a cycle where the waste becomes ammonia (dangerous for fish); then, bacteria will grow and convert it into nitrite (also poisonous); and then additional bacteria will grow and convert it into nitrate (not dangerous). To ensure that your fish survive in the long term, you need to monitor these three parameters and make sure that the ammonia and nitrite do not remain high for too long. I decided to buy this kit so I can do tests every two days, as I read that it is more accurate and inexpensive than using strips. Overall, I am very happy with it. Every test I do takes just a few drops. The manufacturer claims 800+ tests, but be careful that is the total number (adding all the different tests together). If you look at just one type of test, like nitrate, the one that requires the most drops, you will be able to do 50-60 tests (as another reviewer has calculated). Most of the tests are very easy to do, with the exception of nitrate, that requires shaking the bottle for 30 seconds and the water sample for 1 minute, and it is somehow tiring. I found running all the tests took me around 10 minutes. I have taken a video so you can get an idea of the "effort involved". Overall, I am very happy with this kit. Over the last few days I have seen the ammonia climbing, then nitrite and now nitrate, so I can perfectly understand what is going on in my tank! ... show more

  • I would give it 0 stars if i could.
Style: Freshwater
It suppose to be a quantity test, but its not. I bought it when i started to fight some serious algae problem in one of my planted tanks. For quite some time here was no need to test. I do water changes regularly, plants are growing, fish do fine. But now I have a problem, and was looking for a sours of it. I bought this kit and it tells me that Nitrate level in my tank is up to the sky. More often water change didn't help. I checked my RO water and Nitrate was high there too. I bought a new membrane - same problem. Since there was other people complaining about same filters, I decided that filter is bad and changed the whole system.($200) That one part of the story. Of course I looked at my tub water. Nitrates up to the sky, to the level when water is non drinkable - 80 ppm. I would think that test kit is bad, but bottled water and water from my new ROsystem was reading 0 as it should. So I contacted my water district, made them come and collect samples. They called me back and send me a lab report. 6.5 ppm which is higher than average, yet its withing the standards and there is a huge difference between 6 and 80. To be sure I send my own samples to the accredited lab (not the nearest fish store,) and got the same 6 ppm . That test cost me $90. SO. This test is telling you if there are some Nitrate in the water, but not able to tell how much with any kind of accuracy. That makes this test completely useless. I don't need test to tell me "more than 0 nitrate", i know it is more than 0, it's impossible to keep it at complete 0. I need test to tell me what is my Nitrate level. And this is what this test is absolutely not able to do. waste of my money. more than that. $21 kit itself (not illegible for return). $212 for a new filters (now I am not sure that my old filter really was so bad) and $90 for the lab test. $323 total. Not to mention all the hassle of dealing with water district, delivering samples to the lab, and, of course, shearing my concerns with friends and neighbors. Dear API, thank you very very much. I think I will never forget this. Your former customer. ... show more

  • CAPS AREN'T SNAP-TIGHT! USE WITH CAUTION!!
Style: Freshwater
I bought this freshwater test kit so that I could monitor ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels in my new 5.5 gallon tank while I cycle it to prep it for my betta fish. I do find it to be useful, easy to use, and accurate, which is why I gave it 2 stars, but the risks/problems far outweigh these benefits. Okay, I understand that the solutions used for testing the water are dangerous if inhaled, swallowed, or allowed contact with skin. That wasn't a stretch to me. I read all the warnings, and was fine (even with the risks of genetic defects regarding solution #2) because I assumed (and could've sworn that I'd seen advertised) that the caps for the test tubes were snap-tight. They most certainly are not. When testing, most of the testing solutions require that you invert the tube or shake it. During the shaking, I've found that THE TEST TUBES ARE LEAKING THROUGH THE CAPS. This is EXTREMELY unsafe, as all of the test solutions come with their own warnings. Most of them cause severe eye and/or skin irritation. The warnings advise you to wear protection for your eyes and mouth and to test the water parameters outside, but I, like most people with this test kit, I'm sure, didn't follow that advice. I will now. With a few extra precautions. Plus, I will never use the nitrate testing solutions again. I'm planning on buying gloves that cover the length of my arms, surgical masks, and protective eyewear. I know some people may see this as extreme, but, because the test tubes' quality was revealed to be extremely low, I no longer feel that I can trust this product. ... show more
