  • Good quality, accurate readings and simple to use.
Good quality and simple to use refractometer. Be sure to adjust the focus by turning the eye focal when you first receive. (best seen under bright light conditions) I would suggest purchasing the salt calibration solution. (well worth it) Looks to provide very accurate readings. Save yourself a lot of money and buy it here on Amazon for only $20, don't buy it from your local pet store for $30 or more as you will most likely receive the same exact product manufactured in the same exact factory and country just rebranded under a different label. ... show more

  • High end product without the price tag
I bought this refractometer as a more accurate option for salinity than a hydrometer. First I would like to add that I did purchase the calibration solution with it (sold separately). Its possible to use distilled water to calibrate, but I just didn't choose that route. This refractometer came with a nice little plastic case along with: a cleaning cloth, 2 droppers, and a small screw driver (for adjusting the calibration if needed). This refractometer is very simple to use and looks and feels like a high end instrument, but without paying a huge price. I test the salinity in my saltwater tank once a week as well as when I mix up extra seawater. Although I use the calibration solution to ensure accuracy, never once have I had to adjust the calibration. This little guy stays spot on even with me using it (I'm not the most careful with my things sometimes.) I highly recommend this for anyone wanting to be serious with their tank. ... show more

  • 5 stars down the board and I never do that!
This tool is now indispensable to me. I use this to test the water for my brine shrimp. I make small frozen brine shrimp cubes with those silicone molds/trays I get here on Amazon. My fresh water fish, no matter the size of my hand or as small as a neon tetra love them and they are more colorful than just feeding flakes. Being on a tight budget, I did not get calibration solution. I tested tap water, distilled water and bottled water and the tap water and distilled were were the same. The bottled water was a bit higher so, I calibrated with distilled water heated to 79 degrees F. I hatch my shrimp in ~25 - 30 just under 1.020. About 5 tablespoons of regular sea salt in just under a gallon of tap water with a touch of stress coat. I can easily and quickly check that my water (kept at 79 degrees F) is right on with this tool. My shrimp start hatching in ~12 hours under bright LED lights that are continually on. At 24 hours I put about 10 grains of Caputo yeast in with them and harvest at ~36 to ~48 hours based on my schedule. I prefer 48hrs the shrimp are a little bigger. I have in fact raised them to a week old but, it's just not as efficient for me and requires maintenance. I use the same water twice, two batches of shrimp, after re-checking and adjusting water when needed. After two batches in same water, I replace the water with fresh. My harvests are great. I get about 40 cubes of pure shrimp (sucked up with a 2ml dropper right from shrimp net after rinsing) per ~3/4 gallon jug. (I use inverted gallon jug shape of a bleach bottle). After I get all I can out of net with the dropper, I swish the net in fish tank and the fish go nuts gobbling up the remaining hundreds if not thousands of live swimming shrimp I could net get out with the dropper! My hatch ratio is great and I depend on this tool to provide repeatable consistency. A+++ ... show more

  • Indeed a quality product as the reviews suggest
After a string of products bought on Amazon that seems to have fake reviews this is a quality product that has restored my faith. The reviews here are real. This was a joy to use as I set up my Hawaiian Red Shrimp shrimp tank which needs brackish water of 1.010 ; I can easily read this off of the refractometer. Calibration liquid just get the Kirkland (Costco) bottled water that says distilled water (it’ll say with minerals for taste but that doesn’t affect the meter) and calibrate to 0.00. My meter came already calibrated to 0.00 so nothing more to do but to start mixing marine salt with distilled water and playing with the refractometer. For something that looks like a boring doctors toy I sure had a lot of fun measuring salt water. Haha ... show more

  • Make sure it’s adjusted properly or your reading will be off
Now this is great but you still need to buy an instant ocean hydrometer to make sure your readings match. The instant ocean hydrometer will always be right . Make sure to knock out the bubbles on the white dial by hitting it with your knuckle. So once your instant ocean shows a measurement. Compare it with the refractometer and adjust the refractometer so that it matches. ... show more

  • Great product
I just got my refractor. It came with all that was listed in the in production description. Next I calibrated the refractor with the calibration solution that I ordered too. The refractor was off out off the box. The initial reading was 1.024 with the calibration solution. Adjusted the refractor to the 1.026 for calibration fluid. Next tested my water. The water was at what I expected it should be. This refractor should last a good number of years. It is heavy and easy to read in any light. I would recommend this product to anyone that has a marine aquarium. I will update later to see if the refractor will keep its calibration. ... show more

  • Perfect. Super easy to use. Consistent.
I couldn't decide between this and one of the float arm meters or both. Started with this. It is the only one I need. It works great. So easy to use. A couple drops of water on the glass, close the plastic cover and look through eye piece with the plastic lid aimed at a light source = very easy to see exact salinity on scale (clear line shows the salinity on the meter inside). Wipe down glass surface to dry it and put it back on the shelf til next time. I run brackish tanks and it works perfectly. It is consistent with known samples (new mix of water/salt) and with repeat checks of the same source. I couldn't be happier with this. ... show more

  • Good buy
My son ordered this. He just started his first saltwater tank and has been doing a years worth of research before starting. He said this one works just as good as the high priced ones. I can’t say much more other then that cuz I don’t know half of the stuff he does when it comes to tanks. But I do know he said he would give it 5stars. ... show more
