  • good value chuck
Little bit fiddly. I saw in a review or two, folks had bent the tightening rods. I bet you could - they don't feel very hard. But just don't go gorilla-ing it and it will probably be fine. I haven't got crazy tightening it and it's held extremely well - no slip at all with a properly cut tennon. It's not nearly as smooth as my Nova, but it's functional. The chrome plating also peeled right off in the first couple days. C'mon, if the coating is that cheap, why bother? Not sure if it will then rust, but so far it has not. I'll just steel wool it down and keep a light coat of wax on it if I notice rust. No big deal. Good set of jaws - solid 4 stars. Fit and finish and gearing a little rough is why not 5 stars. Function is fine. I thought about a 2nd one ... but the price has gone up. The closer this gets to the Nova in price, the more I lean toward the Nova... probably going that way. ... show more

  • Problems with chuck loosening resolved with correcting the lathe's alignment
This is a revision on my previous review on this inexpensive lathe chuck. I was having problems with its grip on the work piece loosening, which is dangerous. I purchased a Nova chuck and had no problems with that loosening, which seemed to confirm that this PSI chuck was defective. Comments from others seemed to confirm my suspicions. I have a Jet lathe, full size. Then, I noticed that when I retracted the live center on the tail stock that the work piece tilted upward when still held by the Nova chuck. Further examination showed that the motor position locking cam had loosened. It is a handle that needs to be pulled down all of the way once you've positioned the lathe motor on the bed. With the motor partially hanging off the left side of the lathe bed, it had loosened and was no longer tight on the bed. It caused the work piece to want to wobble as the head stock and tail stock were not aligned. Just pushing the handle back down took care of it. I have had no problems with this PSI chuck since then. Before giving up on this chuck, I suggest checking to see if your lathe is aligned. A square, straight work piece properly held in any chuck should be in reasonable alignment with the tail stock or there's something wrong, certainly within in an 1/8" of the center of the tail end of the work piece. Yes, the Nova chuck will hold practically anything even in misalignment, but this PSI chuck is much less expensive and actually can accommodate a greater range of work piece diameters than the Nova. Make sure that your lathe is working properly before condemning this chuck. ... show more

  • PSI Woodworking CUG3418CC Utility Grip 4-Jaw Lathe Chuck System
So this is the first addition to my lathe specifically for bowl turning. After using I am a little disappointed. It does work as described. I had when purchased no basis to compare others except for viewing others on Youtube bowl turning videos so I went with this in the $100 range instead of the almost $200 range. What I don't like is the two bar tightening mechanism. After trying this one and seeing the videos of the type with only the one bar twist tightening system (on more expensive ones it seems), I wish I had spent a little more. Mainly the problem is trying to hold the work piece tight to the Chuck while still tightening with two hands. Sometimes then you notice that the work piece didn't line up right and you have to redo it. The other issue and without knowing how other's work, it does take a little time to switch jaws for either inside or outside mounting. Finally, it is pretty heavy so be careful when removing. My finger was underneath and it hurt when it dropped suddenly after unscrewing. That smarted for a couple of days, but I learned to grip the chuck from the top instead of bottom on removing ... show more

  • Great for the price
I've used expensive chucks that are better quality, but for the price this is as good as you could want and expect. I would prefer an allen wrench tightening, but the two poles work just fine. The adapter works great for my smaller pen lathe.

  • Works great for drilling pen blanks
I wanted a chuck that I could use for drilling pen blanks as my drill press is old and has too much runout making some very inaccurate holes. I also wanted something that wasn't going to break the bank. This set fit the bill for me. It works great on blanks plus has features that make it more useful then had I purchased a dedicated pen blank set (I did review those, this seemed like a better deal). The jaws secure tightly with no slop or play and I've had no issues after a few dozen blanks. If you're looking for a small chuck that gives you some options, to include drilling small turning blanks, I'd highly recommend you give this one a go. ... show more
