Ok this holder is very versatile and I gave it 5 stars. You can even take it apart and use it tight spots like under the dashboard of a car were you can only see with one eye and can't move your arms. But. The alligator clips have a lot of tension and really hold onto boards and solid wire but if you are soldering two insulated wires end to end the heat from soldering softens the wire insulation and the alligator clips cut through and into the wire itself. So you have to put heat shrink on the alligator clip grippers or something in between the wire and the alligator clip to protect the wires insulation. Its too bad that when they stamp out the alligator clip they can't make the gripper side solid and the outer side the open edge part ( I'm not sure I'm describing it correctly). If they make the clip this way, it would be flawless.

Three things make this Helping Hands great...simplicity, practicality, durability. It's simple because it doesn't have all the fancy (and often times useless) lights and other stuff that aren't really necessary. Half the time, those things don't work very well or they get in the way. This is practical in several ways. For example, the alligator clips are removable with thumbscrews. The clips are the kind that can be found at most hardware or home improvement stores. That's not a bad thing. If these get torn up, or if you want to have a different kind with the same size ends that can fit in the sockets, it's easily replaceable. Another example, is the the other thumbscrews allow it to be angled in just about every possible angle you could imagine. As far as durability, the base is heavy for it's size. It is a heavy metal, unlike many of the cheap plastic ones that tip over when they are angled in certain positions. Even if it's not heavy enough to hold down your piece, there's enough edge on the base to place something to add more weight. Overall, this is what I think... - Very versatile - Interchangeable alligator clips - Heavy enough base - Well-balanced - All metal (no plastic parts)

These tools are the best! Although I don't use them for soldering, I do use them with my art. I've used them for holding different items while I work on them, and also to hold an item while I'm sculpting. They make it so much easier to have these "extra hands." They do seem quite sturdy, but I recommend using common sense when it comes to the amount of weight you want it to hold and the clips are sturdy, but I don't recommend you be rough with them. But I believe if you take care of this item it should last a long time. It also is weighted at the bottom pretty good as well. When I first received the box I thought it would be small, but after opening it up I realized they just had it folded up and it was much larger than the box made me think at first. If you enjoy creating art I'm sure you could use this item. It also has one that comes with a magnifying glass that a family member purchased for me and I love using that one as well. This really is a great product for the price.

I have purchased several of these tools from various suppliers - this one is by far my favorite. It has a slightly larger, heavier stand than all the others I have tried. It doesn't have the waste of a magnifying glass that always got in the way. I also really like that the alligator clips are not soldered into the holder so you can change them out - see photo.

I bought this to solder audio cables. The positioning and ergonomics are pretty goofy and require two hands to adjust the arm positioning. Not a huge deal. Alligator clips are quite small so they don't easily grip audio cabling. They are quite strong which is good but the teeth actually cut thru outer cable insulation on 2-wire (or more) cable bundles. Bummer. Fine for single wire work as insulation on individual wires is much more stiff and can handle the sharp teeth. A better design would be to use alligator clips whose teeth will bite but not so sharp that they cut thru outer insulation. If they made a larger overall version and had larger, non-cutting alligator clips, it would be quite useful and practical for soldering audio cabling. I actually tried to solder some speaker cabling. This setup was way too small. I jut wish he description was more clear about the tiny size. And that it's not suitable for audio applications.

These little helping hands really are a huge help! They have many positions and some height adjustments to help you with your project. The alligator clips are strong enough to hold you circuit board with just one clip as long as it's on the smaller side, otherwise you will want to use multiple clips. My favorite thing about this unit is that it can easily flip back and and forth for soldering. This was my first helping hands unit, so I was a bit paranoid about damaging my circuit board and wires, so I put some folded cardboard in the clip to protect the project. It worked very well! I did try using the clips to hold some wire with no cardboard and I did puncture my wire as the clips are strong and a bit sharp. I bought two of them and my only regret is I wish I bought them sooner. Huge help for soldering and holding your project in general (I've used it for holding items while silicone is drying and that worked well also).

I've used Helping Hands since I was a kid. This is probably the 3rd time I've bought one. I don't know remember what happened to my original one, which lasted for years. I had one at work, but it was bought with tax payer money and it stayed at my office when I retired. So, when I found I needed one this week (odd how my 65 year old fingers don't seem as dexterous as they used to be), I had to go to Amazon because all the Radio Shacks have closed. I picked out this one as it didn't bother me with unwanted magnifying glass. If I need magnification, I would rather have one mounted to my worktable, not on the Helping Hands. Yeah, the thing is lightweight, made of pig iron and has light duty clamps but it is exactly what I need to help me fix eyeglasses or do some light soldering. Thanks Amazon!
