  • Poorly designed, hard to clean and broke within a week of usage
I bought this because of the extremely high ratings, but it would be an understatement to say I'm quite disappointed as it broke within a week of usage - the sixth time I used it, the locking mechanism and plastic casing broke (more on this in a bit). Honestly, I'm baffled as to how this product garnered such positive reviews. Even without the broken locking mechanism, the product has design flaws. Proctor Silex usually makes very durable and affordable items, and I have used many products from this manufacturer for years to my satisfaction, but this toaster fell way short off the mark. Here is my experience with it making SIMPLE cheese sandwiches, with just a slice of American cheese in between two slices of white bread (as you can see, I didn't make anything complicated at all and put in the lightest possible load the locking mechanism could bear). PROS: When it works, it toasts the sandwiches evenly and heats the filling of the sandwich well, melting the cheese. (Perhaps even to the point of overheating the cheese) CONS: Firstly, the product design is flawed. Sure, the inner surfaces are nonstick and easy to clean, but the content of your sandwiches (even a simple cheese sandwich with minimal filling) will often spill out onto the portion of the plastic casing that isn't nonstick, making this product hard to clean. You have to scrub, scrub, scrub away hard to clear the residue from the plastic. A second design flaw is that there is very narrow gap between the nonstick casing and plastic outer casing of the toaster. Bits of food, moisture from food and breadcrumbs will often fall into the crevice, making it nearly impossible to clean. Other very hard to reach surfaces include the areas in the back near the hinges. I'm no neat freak, but I wouldn't want to have remnants of sandwiches cooked days/weeks/months ago still lingering in the product. Unless you're putting nothing but bread inside of this product because you like to have sandwiches with absolutely no filling in them, you're highly likely to run into this problem of gunk getting trapped in the product. The third flaw is that because food will often spill out onto the plastic casing which isn't non-stick, when you open the lid after your sandwich is toasted, bits of the bread will get stuck to the lid, ripping open the sandwich as you lift the lid and creating a mess. I only used a SINGLE slice of cheese in my sandwich, made sure no corners of the slice were sticking out and used the timer as indicated. Yet in all of my attempts to make a sandwich, the cheese spilled out, bubbled and stuck to the plastic casing, leading to the problem described above. And FINALLY, as the other reviews pointed out, the locking mechanism is very flimsy. The words that are printed on it faded after the third usage (turned out to be the least of my problems. lol). You have to be very gentle with it or it might come off. I was SUPER gentle after reading the reviews and this is what happened: I was making another simple cheese sandwich and used the lock, no problem, and then stood back to let it do its thing. As I was scrolling through my phone, I heard a snap and bang and looked up in time to see a piece of plastic SHOOTING across the kitchen with great speed. It flew right over the table and thank goodness nobody was sitting at the table at that moment because it could have poked someone eye pretty badly. The lock had SPONTANEOUSLY shot off while the product was in use. It wasn't that a screw came loose, a plastic fragment broke off and a crack appeared on another part of the lid. I have put in a request for a refund and will be returning the product. I know you get what you pay for, but I only wanted this for the simplest possible sandwich, and it still broke within a week, even after I used it CAREFULLY. Do yourself a favor, skip this product and the brand. Go for a sturdier one, pay a few bucks more and save yourself the hassle. It is also disappointing that I will now have to think twice before buying other products from the same brand after having generally satisfactory experiences with their other products. Will update with pictures later. ... show more

  • go ahead and buy it
UPDATE after a few days of owning. I know it is completely my fault but I dropped it on my linoleum kitchen floor and the front handle with locking latch "exploded" all over my floor. It was like dropping cold peanut brittle. I don't know what kind of plastic they use but I have never had anything shatter into so many small pieces before after dropping it. I really would pay more money to get something built out of better materials. I am sure it will still heat up and cook so we will see. If not I will have to buy another one. I am a little disappointed that they raised the price by about 2 dollars since I bought this last week. ORIGINAL REVIEW**********************I just got it today and made a toasted cheese sandwich. I didn't use any butter and it toasted fine. I will probably add butter next time just to see if the texture is better and if the flavor is better. The spilled cheese didn't stick to the nonstick plates but I am knocking off a point because where the nonstick plates meet the area next to it in front of the handle there is a very small groove where food will and does accumulate. Also the large area in front of the plates is not non stick so any spilled items like cheese stick quite well and increase the effort needed to clean the item. It is a basic $14 machine and I can see a lot of possibilities here for the kids to make their own sandwiches. Mine are young so supervision is a must. I don't care too much how it smashes the bread and makes it more chewy than you might get if you toasted a cheese sandwich in a pan or similar but I am not complaining. The sandwich cooked in right about 3 minutes and I don't recall the preheat time. Either way a hot sandwich is pretty damn quick to make. ... show more

  • Don't expect anything but toasted sandwiches
This was cheap enough to try without getting angry and disappointed. But it's only 700 watts, and could realistically only make fancy toasted sandwiches. If that's all you want, it will work. But, I was sold on the turnover maker idea. I attempted a Thanksgiving leftovers turnover/pizza pocket creation. I put cooked stuffing (dressing), turkey, prosciutto (fancy Italian bacon substitute), cheddar and a small cranberry jelly slice; topped with more cooked stuffing. I "wanted" a Thanksgiving leftovers "sandwich" pocket without using boring white bread. However after 10 minutes it still wasn't warm inside, but smoking, I moved the machine to the stovetop and turned on the kitchen good vent to prevent smoke sectors from making the entire family angry with me and this stupid cheap machine. Eventually I pulled the "food" out after 15 minutes, burnt ash cheese, and caramelized cranberries I couldn't chew had escaped to the cooking plates, while the rest was lukewarm inside. It was edible with side of guacamole, but I was overly excited about the advertised potential of this machine and heart broken from the failure! I don't recommend using half the machine for 1 sandwich creation, it overflowed everywhere, be careful how much ingredients you add, and fill all 4 cavities to prevent thermodynamic failure of an empty HOT side and cooking side It's very difficult to clean! Sure the nonstick cooking plates clean up easy, but the black plastic around the handle near the cooking elements will build up burnt food melted into the plastic, USE SPRAY FOOD LUBRICANT, like Pam, and intentionally get some on the handle area. The next day I tried again, I kept it simple, stuffing, cut the turkey into small baby food size to easily fit into this machine, and cut the paper thin prosciutto; nothing extra that could ruin the moisture level or burn inside. Still had to cook it for 15+ minutes to get the inside warm. I reached the point where I couldn't brown/chrisp the outside without burning it. Maybe hot turkey in the middle would have helped. But I now know this is just a fancy 700 watt toaster, don't attempt the advertised eggs, pizza rolls, turnovers, or try a Thanksgiving leftovers creation masterpiece. I'll stick to the 1,000+ watt waffle iron! ... show more
