  • Mixed Feelings...
In fairness, its hard to beat the value of this media storage unit for the price. If you are looking for a low-cost solution to hold a decent amount of videos, it's certainly a very fair deal. That being said, I have mixed feelings about the product overall... ON THE POSITIVE SIDE: (1) The price (as mentioned - a great deal for the money). (2) The look of the item is modern and attractive. (3) Customer service from the company who manufactured it is excellent (the base of one of the two units I purchased was defective and they sent me a new base piece within one week). (4) Easy to construct. ON THE NEGATIVE SIDE: (1) While its easy to put together, the directions aren't as clear in some respects as I would have liked them to be. Be sure you closely examine the pieces before ANY assembly - not just to make sure you have all the parts, but also be very CLEAR on which piece goes where. As an example, it doesn't really clearly explain which piece is the top and which is the bottom (they look almost identical side by side). If you select the wrong one, the whole thing will be virtually ruined due to the quality of the materials. (2) Speaking of quality of materials, obviously, for this price, its all particle board with a cheap black vaneer coating except the backing which is a thick cardboard/thin chip board like material. The black coating was peeling or chipped off on a few of the corners on the two units I purchased, so you may need to add a drop of glue or use a black sharpie marker to fix small superficial issues with the unit's appearance. From afar, no one can tell, but you can see it in a few small places when you are up close. Oh well. (3)Design - while the unit appears very attractive, its not as functional as I would have liked it to be. As you can see in the picture that accompanies the item on Amazon, if you are using the unit for Blu-Ray discs and DVDs, you can get three rows of shelves per column (roughly 23 discs in their box per shelf - roughly 207 titles per media storage unit). Sadly, had this unit been about six inches taller, you could have gotten another shelf in each column to accomodate approximately another 69 DVDs/Blu-Rays. Because of this simple oversight, you have a bit of a gap in the space between shelves that either remains empty or forces you to lay some additional titles flat (horizontally instead of vertically) to get an additional shelf in and use the space more effectively (which doesn't look as nice in my opinion). Also because of the design, the titles on the end of each shelf aren't fully visible or removable. They are almost hidden behind the edges of the shelf, which means you need to take out another DVD or two to be able to pull the ones of the end out. Again, aesthetically the unit looks fantastic, but its design negatively impacts its functionality, which detracts from it in my opinion. (4) Structural Support - The package does come with a bracket for the back of the storage unit to help hold it to the wall, which was appreciated. Like the rest of the unit, the bracket is made of chip board (particle board), which isn't especially strong. When the unit is empty, its more than sturdy, but when the unit is full you may find that the weight is a lot more than the bracket can handle alone (that was my concern anyway). You may want to consider adding additional support for safety. Especially, because this hangs on a wall, and you don't want it falling on anyone or dammaging anything! A piece of real wood and a few screws from your local hardware store will do the trick. In short, the item does the job I bought it for. It stores the media and looks great when people walk by it eventhough the functional design leaves a little to be desired. If you are looking for high quality that will last a lifetime, you may not be totally happy (think IKEA). If you can get past that, I think you'll be reasonably pleased for the money you spent. ... show more

  • Looks just as pictured!
Color: Black
Only thing I was sad about was there was a chip/bend in the bottom of my shelf. That was the only damage, so I didn't think it was worth returning. I should be able to hide it better with a black marker. Item wasn't too bad to assemble, even though the directions were very confusing. Mostly just looked at the pictures to match each step. I ended up screwing the back support board on backwards since there was no clear picture of which way to put it, but it was an easy fix. The back cardboard panels were a pain to pop in, just be patient and firm. I don't know what everyone is complaining about with the bottom shelf being unpainted. Mine was, so maybe they fixed that. Each individual interior shelf is unpainted on the bottom, but once you get media in there, you can't see it. Overall, I don't regret this purchase at all! Looks so nice up on the wall and decorated! ... show more

  • RTA... some assembly required
Color: Cherry/Black
Can't give half stars so rounded up. It's better than the average RTA but still particleboard. Read The Funny Manual... pictogram actually. Then change things a little for easier assembly. Assemble the box, without the cross brace/hanger across the back. Do NOT tighten all the way, leave about 1/8 of an inch of the silver philips head screws protruding. Next lay the unit face DOWN on a flat surface... floor is works. Insert the left and right back panels (pressboard) into the grooves on the left and right sides. I used a rubber mallet and one of the small shelves that comes with the unit to gently TAP everything into the slots and "square" them up. Insert the center back panel.... snug but not tight fit. NOW place the cross brace/hanger below the top back. Tighten this piece to SNUG but not TIGHT.. Tighten ALL silver screws like you would lug nuts on a tire... alternating. Do NOT OVER TIGHTEN... it is particle board after all. I used a SMALL drill bit to make pilot holes for the furniture tacks that hold the backing in place. Pilot ONLY the back board so you still need to hammer them in place. Place the tacks no closer than 4 inches from the top of the unit... they get in the way of the hanger otherwise. The rest is straightforward. Secure the wall piece of the hanger to STUDS in the wall. Make sure you hit the studs in the center. Again drilling small pilot holes through the particle board and this time into the drywall AND studs will make things easier. The "face" boards attach with "dowels". The shelves use metal shelf pins. Pro's: Decent quality for particle board. NICE veneer on all facing surfaces ALL parts included. Having the hanger as part of the DESIGN makes it not only easy to hang but adds strength to the unit and helps square it up. The construction uses basic box design with "joists" to make the box/frame without relying on the back panels to contribute to the strength. (I'm considering removing them completely since the panels (pressboard) are flat black and so is the wall (home theater) behind the unit.) CONS: I HATE particle board. Furniture grade plywood would be superior... especially for this unit. It's particle board. I managed to split one of the uprights while attempting to push the unit square (don't tighten before getting the back panels in place). Fortunately some wood glue will repair things but the screw that caused the split will be loose. Time will tell if the shelves hold up. Again particle board. While a single disc with case weighs little, they are like a box of paper in that they add up. The back panels, even after being tacked in place, are wobbly. Fortunately they aren't part of the structure, like cheaper RTA often is. I'd SUGGEST this for others above most RTA since the price WAS 109, bought it when it hit 90 and I see it is now 81. I was looking at another unit that was closer to $200 in stores. ... show more

  • Better Instructions Would Be Helpful
Color: Cherry/Black
Overall, I'm quite happy with this CD shelf, but the instructions were somewhat vague. I eventually figured it out, but better assembly instructions would have saved me some time.
