I would have liked to leave a 4.5 star grade. I am quite happy with the product - particularly the way it was designed for installation and maintenance. The design should facilitate bulb replacement (Rufus says that the bulbs are compatible with Lennox Y0390 OEM systems, Lennox Healthy Climate UVC-24C models.) The system is longer that must other UV systems I have seen available and I anticipate that it will do a better job than the shorter bulbs would. Also, the 80 watts suggests to me that it will be more effective in killing molds. Quality seems good and I anticipate getting good value for the price. My one criticism is has to do with the sparsity of instructions. I would have liked instructions to have given me the size of the hole make in the duct. Looking at the attached figure - which I copied from the Amazon page - I naively anticipated that my 3.125 inch diameter Bi-Metal Hole Saw would be adequate. When the package arrived and I measured the back of the mounting plate, I realized I needed a slightly larger hole. Because I did not want to purchase a new hole saw for single use, I used the one I had and just ground the hole larger. My advise is to wait for the product to arrive, take your measurements, and then buy or borrow the hole saw that you need. Finally, I found that the tiny self-tapping screws provided did not self-tap. I ended up drilling pilot holes and using slightly larger sheet metal screws from my collection.

I cannot speak about the longevity or effectiveness of these bulbs because I only just installed one in my heat pump and haven't even started using it yet, besides a short test. But I have the following comments: First off, it is clearly a fairly cheap unit overall. The whole construction is plastic and you can tell immediately that there isn't much care put into the manufacture. Frankly I don't really care since the bulbs have to be replaced every year regardless. So as long as it works, it doesn't matter to me. In fact I ordered a second one which will be going on the other side of my AHU. The main reason I chose this one is because of how simple the installation is. There is only a simple plastic faceplate (very similar to an electrical junction box cover) that you mount with zip screws and the bulb assembly just twists and locks into it. Extremely simple and also very easy to remove and replace bulbs, which is what I wanted. The required hole size is 3.375" (3 and 3/8"). I'm going to assume most people will be mounting this either on the side of a duct or an AHU, either way it will probably be galvanized sheet metal. Although it is possible to make the hole using a drill bit and tin snips, it will probably end up being very messy if you do it that way. I highly recommend you buy a metal hole saw. Again the correct size is 3.375 but you can have a hole up to 4" or even a little more and it will still work fine, the plate is big enough to cover it. I know that for a fact because I installed one over an existing 4" hole. As far as controlling it, there are several options. I made a circuit with a CT (current transformer) and a temperature relay. The CT will sense the current flow to my unit's fans and will turn on the bulbs whenever the fans are running. The temperature relay will shut down the bulbs if the temperature in my unit exceeds 80F, which indicates that it is running in heating mode. If you are installing one of these in an A/C you don't need temperature protection, but since my unit is a heat pump and we do use it in heating mode, I don't want the UV bulbs running and being subjected to 100 degree air. I included a schematic of the control circuit I am using. The fuses are optional depending on what gauge wire you use in the circuit, but for something like this operating in a high moisture environment, its a good idea to have them. The other option you have for turning the bulbs on is an airflow switch, but that would most likely be more expensive than a CT and unless you know something about airflow switches, it would also probably end up being more complicated to set and less reliable in the long run. It is also possible that you may not need to buy anything if you have a unit that has auxiliary contacts you can use for this purpose. You would have to check the schematic for your unit. I will be updating this review in the summer depending on how my units run. I am expecting both bulbs to make it through the whole summer, if they don't I may have to toss them and buy something of higher quality.

I bought this item twice & installed it in my HVAC duct just below the blower fan. Neither unit lasted more than 2 hours before they quit working. Wouldnt even give it 1 star but you have to in order to post the review. ITS GARBAGE.
