  • Does it all!!!
RE: Powercolor Hellhound 7900 GRE My grandson and I built a new machine last December (2023), an AMD build centered around the 7800v3d CPU. When it came to the GPU, we used a 4070 from another machine waiting and hoping for better pricing on AMD cards, in particular the 7900 XT. When the 7900 GRE was announced we were all –in waiting for reviews and a fix on the overclocking. The GRE was exactly what we wanted, a stock card that beats the 4070 Super and overclocks to compete with the 7900 XT. We picked the Powercolor Hellhound because it checked all the boxes, price, size, weight, great thermals, quiet, large factory OC, glowing reviews and ability to overclock with meaningful results (uses Samsung memory rated 20Gbps). The first thing we did was launch each game, check for Nvidia options and turned them off, uninstalled the Nvidia drivers using DDU and shut down. After installing the Hellhound, we disconnected the network and booted up, installed the latest drivers (24.6.1) and launched Furmark 1 and ran the 1440p benchmarking and then did the same for Furmark 2. Furmark is one of several benchmarking tools for windows and linux (Furmark 2) which is used for troubleshooting GPU ‘s, also provides a quick benchmark for OpenGL and Vulcan (Furmark 2). The results were what we were looking for to show everything was ok; Furmark 1: GRE- 15445, 4070 –11926 (the GRE is 23% faster) Furmark 2: GRE-12378, 4070-9299 (the GRE is 25% faster). The most meaningful way to benchmark a GPU is in-game testing, without repeating an entire review for the Powercolor Hellhound 7900 GRE a brief recap follows: Relative Performance (25 games, all cards stock, no user OC): Hellhound vs 4070 (Hellhound is 17% faster) Hellhound vs 4070 Super (Hellhound is 5% faster) Hellhound vs 4070 Ti Super (Ti Super is 10% faster) Hellhound vs 7900 XT (7900 XT is 14% faster) The three games (no user OC) that I regularly play with this machine are Avatar FOP, Halo Infinite and Doom Eternal the Nvidia optimized settings were left unchanged and when launched for the first time with the GRE all AMD options were turned off except for Radeon Anti-Lag. The first thing I noticed; the image quality was significantly improved. I thought I left some option on, so I double checked. Halo Infinite and Doom Eternal saw the biggest change, I ‘ve been playing Doom Eternal since launch and I never thought it could look this good. Performance wise Avatar FOP (with FSR/FG set to Quality, this is the setting I used for the 4070) FPS improved 10+% with better lows, Halo Infinite no change with these settings in FPS but noticeably better image quality, Doom Eternal this was like a new game, unbelievable graphics and 12+% increase in FPS, the 4070 also used DLSS (balance), I just might play this again from the beginning. The Powercolor Hellhound 7900 GRE is an incredible card, the 7900 GRE was listed as the penultimate card for 2024 and I agree, but this card should be number 1. I highly recommend this card for anyone looking for an affordable gaming GPU that does it all. ... show more

  • THE 7900 GRE IS THE BEST PRICE v PERFORMANCE CARD !
I decided to upgrade from my 4060ti to the 7900 GRE, and boy am I HAPPY I did. This card is an absolute beast. TEARS through pretty much ANY game at 1440p, and even at 4k it has very respectable performance. I see people complaining about coil wine or hot temps, but I have had zero issues from this gpu. 100% recommend. ... show more

  • Amazing GPU Please Read about setup if you have issues! Simple Fix!
Have the Hellhound 7900gre which will use 330 watts with power boost on 15 percent. 260watts is the base wattage. just fyi.. 800watt psu at least Also Own 6800xt 7800xt hellhound and a Sapphire 7800xt pulse. The GRE beats them all in 3dmark if your all about fps and performance for gaming. If your having issues please remember the AMD Adrenalin software OVERCLOCKS the card way to high when you install the software! It auto overclocks at install! ALL Radeons I have did. Please lookup your cards GPU speed and set it within the AMD software. My GRE was set to 2626 when the cards specs is more like 2400mhz. Same for DDR6 speeds, make sure its correct with your cards manufacture or it will crash everytime and give you bugs. Zero crashes and tested on cs2, elden ring, assassins creed s etc. on up to date games. Once you fix your gpu speed and vram speed, then go back and OC little by little. These cards love undervolting. Test little by little until your stable as every card will be slightly different by about 10 percent. No way Id choose any other card for around 550. This is 7900 power no question 4k @ 100-130fps without Frame Generation. ... show more

  • Good GPU, but it can be a little tempermental
After my 3080 died after two years of use and the 4070 Super I replaced it with died after one month of use, I decided I was sick of Nvidia and decided to try AMD. After watching several reviews on YouTube, I decided on the 7900 GRE. The Good: This is a good GPU for 1440p. Using FSR, I can get a consistent 120-165 fps in GrayZone warfare on medium-high settings. The AMD Adrenalin Software is way better than anything Nvidia currently has (Seriously Nvidia, stop trying to make GeForce Experience a thing). I can do just about everything I need and more with Adrenalin. the price is also way better than the Nvidia equivalent offerings (I paid $550 for this GPU vs. $660 for a 4070 Super) and it came with two free games. It also uses two 8 pin PCIE connectors and not that new garbage connector that Nvidia is currently putting on all of their high end GPU's (That connector is the reason my 4070 died). The Bad: While FSR works, it does not look nearly as good as DLSS. Most of the time FSR looks kind of grainy. If you have the option to use FSR 3, it looks a lot better but it still has a ways to go. Also, ray tracing on this GPU is not nearly as good as Nvidia. The GPU itself also draws a lot of power, and as a result is a bit louder as the fans ramp up while under load. And it is physically large (Be sure to check your case dimensions if you are using a smaller PC case). The Ugly: While I do like this GPU a lot, it is not always a plug and play experience. I spent the first week I had this GPU changing settings (In game, in windows, and in Adrenalin) due to a strange issue that I had with screen flickering. I also ran into an issue with DaVinci resolve that any recordings I made with OBS that were saved as .mkv files gave me the "Media Offline" error while trying to edit anything. I found that I had to remux the .mkv files to .mp4 format in order to get it to work. It was a strange issue. Also, if you get an AMD GPU make sure that you get good quality display port cables that are VESA rated. Radeon GPU's are a little grumpy with cable choice. Club 3D cables are a little pricey, but totally worth it. Summary: This is a good 1440p GPU if you are willing to get your hands a little dirty with changing settings. It may not be as good as Nvidia, but it is close and in some cases actually runs some games better than Nvidia. If you are not comfortable going in and changing settings or messing around with Windows, this may not be the GPU for you. ... show more
