Should I Buy It?

If gaming is your primary focus, the 7800X3D CPU delivers excellent performance and is notably more efficient than its predecessors. However, if your work involves heavy computing tasks or if you're into overclocking, you may want to consider other options. Still, given its high performance in gaming and energy efficiency, it's a worthy investment for most users.

  • Performance beast!
Decided to move from an i5-13600K over to a 7800X3D since I mostly use my PC for gaming and not productivity work. This CPU is a beast for performance and runs rather cool for what you get out of it, and its power efficient as well! Highly recommend this CPU if all you care about is gaming performance and it fits within your budget! If you need something a little more affordable, you can't go wrong with the 5800X3D. ... show more

  • Unbelievable gaming value With Excellent power efficiency.
Bought this CPU for my setup when it first came out and have not looked back ever since.. I'm very happy that I went with the 7800X3D instead of one of the hungry Intel chips.. 7800X3D stays extremely efficient during all workloads.. average of around 70watts during gaming and 100 to 120 watts peak workload (CPU only). This is literally right now the perfect gaming CPU. If you're not some crazy extreme overclocker.. I'm a PC engineer and have built many custom computers using this processor including 4090 based computers and never seen any bottlenecks or problems. The only thing to keep in mind with this platform is that first boot can take quite a bit of time so you really do have to give this platform a minute to boot no matter what.. kind of reminds me of a server and how it starts up lol 😂 Also make sure to get the latest BIOS for your motherboard... that can fix many issues we've had computers come in for repairs for on the AM5 platform.. this also definitely holds true for AM4 😉 For best performance get DDR5 6000Mhz CL30 RAM. Multiple benchmark show that's the sweet spot.. Anything faster or slower is shown to negatively affect performance for the 7800X3D. Also 2 sticks of ram is better than 4 for the 7800X3D since it only has one CPU die or CCD Yes Intel May hold the performance crown for most things but that comes at a cost of very high electrical use.... the 14900K is a joke requiring on average 200w gaming.. and if you do any workload get ready for up to 600 watts load.. and this is just for the CPU... this does not include the rest of your system... In the end if you want to build a high-end system with a total system power draw on average 600 to 1200 watts peak then go for an Intel base system... but if you want to stay more reasonable without much sacrifice averaging around 300 to 800 watts peak then stick with the AMD 7800X3D. Last thing is that the AM5 platform also has many years of upgrades ahead of it as we've seen with the AM4 platform being supported for a long time... This will provide you many upgrade paths in the future. Hope this helps your buying decisions 😊 Good luck. ... show more

  • Great performance so far, 0 stability issues.
Shipping took a little bit, however it was worth it. Great performance paired with a 4070 ti super. Does not run super hot either, pretty easy to keep cool.

  • Gaming beast, still good at other tasks.
Nothing much to say that hasn't been said before but this chip is easy to cool, easy to run, and performs better than basically everything on the market. The only drawback is that it is bested by the 7700x in productivity which is cheaper, but it's still no slouch and the gaming performance is worth it unless you need those extra boost speeds. ... show more

  • Massive uptick in average FPS in Warzone 2
I've always been an Intel guy, but there is no denying right now that AMD are making the fastest gaming chips. If you care about gaming performance, you cannot currently do better than this chip. The main competitive game I play is Warzone 2. I have the water-cooled version of the 3080ti (it has its own pump and exhaust fans) and I had previously been running an i9 10900k. It was cooled by a Noctua NHD15 on Windows 11 at 1440p. No matter how low I put the graphics settings, I could only ever average about 120-130 FPS with very frequent drops to 100-110FPS and some occasional drops to the high 80's and low 90's. This held true even if I used DLSS Performance mode. Zero difference in average FPS. It felt absolutely terrible to try to push an enemy team at close range with mortar strikes and smoke grenades going off and have a huge FPS drop. Felt equally as bad to stare off at a big cityscape horizon while trying to take long range precision shots and suddenly have to fight system performance. Long story short, I paired the 7800X3D with a Gigabyte x670 Aorus Elite AX motherboard and 32GB of DDR5 6000mhz Corsair Vengeance RAM, and my average FPS has exploded up to 190-210. Jumping out the plane I'm almost always above 200FPS, which is just absurd to me, and I'm frequently in the 210-220 range just running around Al Mazrah. My 1% lows are in the 165-180 range, which I can barely feel. I've tested this CPU as well in BF2042 and The Last of Us Part 1. Basically, I'm never CPU-bound anymore. When I lower my graphics settings, I get a lot of FPS back. That never used to happen. On my 3080ti + i9 10900k setup, it DIDN'T matter how low I dropped the graphics. There was minimal FPS difference between high and medium and even less difference between medium and low, because I was CPU bound. Now that I'm no longer CPU bound, I can drop graphics settings and get a LOT of FPS back or settle on a nice mix of medium & high for a story-driven game like TLOU and still get fantastic FPS with almost zero noticeable drops. Back when I was getting frustrated with WZ2 FPS drops, I had seriously considered that I might need to upgrade my GPU to a 4090 and I've very glad I held off on that decision. 4090 MSRP right now is $1600 without tax and I can't find any on Amazon below $1700. With tax you're looking at a pretty penny, and my FPS issues still would have continued unabated because I'd have been addressing the wrong problem. This CPU + mobo + RAM altogether came out to $972.98 with tax. So I basically saved at least $700 and probably more while massively increasing the performance scaling of the games I play and unlocking the full potential of my watercooled 3080ti. I did have to order an AM5 mounting bracket for my Noctua cooler, but that was only like 7 bucks and it was easy to install. When it comes to CPU's, I can officially be counted as a member of team red. I've been building PC's since 2006 and every single one of them up until now has had an Intel chip in it, but there is no denying the raw performance of 3D v cache in certain games, particularly in the battle royale genre. ... show more

  • Incredible Gaming CPU.
I replaced my 14900K with the 7800X3D. The 14900K was running stock with DDR5 7600 CL36. The 7800X3D is running stock with DDR5 6000 CL30. The performance in 1440p gaming with a 4090 is about the same between the two CPUs. Although I did notice that the 7800X3D provided a considerably better experience in Diablo 4. The 14900K uses 200-300% more power. The 14900K runs hotter on the same cooler, all while delivering the same or worse performance. I'm very sensitive to stutter, and there is no AMDip with the 7000 series. In fact, the 7800X3D feels smoother than the 14900K. I think that Intel might be pushing the i9 CPUs too hard and creating instability. That's just a guess, though. But one thing is for sure: the 7800X3D is the best CPU you can buy if your only interest is playing games. ... show more
