  • Handheld portable welder
New to welding and decided this was my best option. Learning has been hit and miss although this machine does exactly what it's supposed to do. It has temperature adjusting. It is extremely functional and it was budget friendly. It is heavy does weigh quite a bit but it is easy to use. Great for learning ... show more

  • Don't expect too much and you may find this quite useful.
This packs a 110V inverter, so the advertised 250 amps is pretty optimistic. Maybe it works out somehow on paper, but most of the time these inverters on 110V are going to push 80-120 amps max. Like the description says, this is a decent unit for Home DIY and light projects. That Home DIY needs to be light projects, too, because that's a pretty broad range that could easily outscope this machine. I'd recommend upgrading the ground clamp on this, and you definitely want to invest in a proper mask. Don't risk your eyesight to save a few bucks. All that said, this is super compact and pretty cheap. You're gonna get what you pay for, so go into it realizing that. Manage your expectations and don't try to push it too hard and you might find yourself surprised. ... show more

  • Unlikely to be able to run at full power
I am a hobbyist DIYer and was interested in this product to do small welding jobs around the house. Things like make small metal brackets, fix my kayak beach wheels (which have a broken weld), weld small hooks, etc. I do think this handheld stick welder will do those things, and the description clearly says “Home DIY and Light Projects”. However, there are some things you should know… I unboxed this stick welder and started by reading the manual. This itself was a challenge. The English in the manual is very poorly translated, with many incorrect words and grammatical mistakes. Examples: “Do not weld Calcium metal” (I think they mean Cadmium), and “You must use career man to maintenance” (meaning only a professional should try and repair the unit). The whole manual reads like this. Suffice it to say, the manual is difficult for an English speaker to read or even understand in most places. Looking at the welder itself, it is quite ok to hold in the hand and the appearance is quite similar to other handheld units available. The rod holder is not a spring clip, but a manual screw holding design. That doesn’t matter to me. Some of the other similar welders have an on-off finger trigger, but this one does not. Again, not too big a deal as far as I can tell. Where I start to have problems is with the power rating. There is a digital scale which goes to 250. But 250 Amps? The manual says the output voltage is ~24.8 volts, so at 250A, that is a whopping 6200 W, so not likely! No standard 120v household output in the US can provide even close to this without tripping the breaker. The manual, in fact says that you need a 40A breaker(!). Check your electrical panel … see any 120v 40A breakers in there? At best, a standard 120v outlet in the US has a 20A breaker, and many are just 15A. That will limit you to less than 2400W right there (assuming a 20A breaker). The manual actually states a max 3800 W power, so again, it is all a little unclear except the 40A breaker recommendation which is quite clear. That being said, you do not have to run the welder at max power. It has an adjustable setting, which I guess you will only be able to run at 50% full power, and likely somewhat less than that, otherwise you will trip your breaker. Also, any other 120v stick welder will have this same limitation when run on a standard 120v outlet. So this one will not be any better or any worse than the other handheld stick welders out there. You can’t get around this limitation of your 120v household outlet, no matter what the stick welder design. I am not sure what maximum effective output amperage you can realize on a 20A breaker with this welder and don’t have a good way to measure it either. Maybe ~100A more or less. The only safety equipment provided with the welder is a pair of leather gloves. You WILL need other safety equipment and you WILL need to learn how to use the safety equipment properly, otherwise you could hurt yourself and others. There are lots and lots of videos which show proper procedures and how to safely and properly weld with a stick welder. Watch them before you ever try your first weld. Lastly, welding is a skill. It takes some practice to be able to get a good weld, and you probably won’t get a good result your first try. But you have to start somewhere, and a stick welder is a good place to start. According to the unclear specifications, you will likely only be able to run this welder at less than 50% of what it is capable of doing. I guess that can be considered a good thing. Better to run at 50% of capacity than full out on some other handheld welder. Keep in mind also, the manual says 20% duty cycle. That means you weld for 20%, rest for 80%. Again, that is no different than any of the other handheld stick welds out there. I can’t vouch for the longevity of this welder because I just got it, but it should be able to handle all the little welding jobs I wanted it to do. ... show more
