Why I ordered this item: I've got a covered patio and my old bookshelf speakers were rusting out from humidity. Wanted something built for outside that could get loud enough over the pool pump. Likes: * Sound is crazy good for outdoor speakers. Bass punches through even with the pool pump running. * The mounting bracket is snazzy. You click the speaker onto the wall plate and it locks in, no separate screws once the bracket's up. * I can angle these up or down after they're mounted. Useful since my wall isn't at ear height. * Build feels tough, the finish shows no rust or fading spots. * They're not huge. Tucked into the corner of my patio they kind of disappear. No likes: * The included wire leads are short. I had to splice in more speaker wire to reach my receiver. * Volume knob (well, the whole thing) has no on-board control. You're stuck adjusting from whatever amp you've got them wired to. Would I pay full price for this product: Yes Final thoughts: These are made for a covered outdoor space where you want real speaker sound and not a bluetooth puck. The bracket system is the best part, mounting took me maybe twenty minutes total. If you don't already have an amp or receiver to power them, factor that into the cost. ... show more

I first hooked up the speakers indoors using the cables from my old but still beloved KEF 104/2 set. There was obviously less bass in these Atrium 5s than the floorstanding KEFs, but I was struck by the excellent clarity and imaging. Convinced they were OK I mounted in the lanai (35' x 12') where we had an aging pair of BOSE 101S until 1 died after 15 years outside in FL heat and humidity. I mounted them on the ceiling about 1 foot from the side and back walls, where the 101s were mounted. Holes didn’t line up but I had some wall anchors rated at 15 lbs/ea. that worked. The sensitivity was almost an exact match to the 101s. Since we listen mostly to jazz I started with the Bill Evans “Riverside” disc )personal favorite) and loved the texture of the piano. The 101s made it sound like a percussion instrument where the Atriums made it sound more like a stringed instrument, if that makes any sense. The stand up bass was clear and resonant. Miles Davis’ horn on Blue in Green sounded rich and crisp. I tried vocals which seem to reveal crossover problems but all including a variety of female voices (Ronstadt, kd lang, and Bonnie Raitt) sounded clear and smooth with no holes in the response. The bass actually sounded better on the lanai probably due to the proximity of the ceiling and walls. Our old favorite Steely Dan is playing now with all their great instrumentals and the vocals clearer than before. So far I am very happy. Some hard rock lovers (I do listen to that also) may prefer the old “JBL sound” that artificially boosts the lower midrange for warmth and increases the high end for more punchy dynamics. In listening to the Eagles Hotel California (a favorite) the dynamics seem a little flat but the band was famous for layering multiple analog recorded tracks which results in limited dynamics and the speakers are just reproducing what’s there. Tone controls can help if desired. Would I have liked the 6s better? Probably, but I am very happy with the 5s on the patio and at the price (the white ones had a really good price for some reason) they are a steal. ... show more

Excellent! I have a pair of Atrium 4’s that have performed admirably for over ten years! Those were purchased and deployed pool-side at our former home. Like them so much that I took them with me to our new place. Upon moving our pool/patio area size increased substantially. The 4’s were still part of my overall plan but I wanted to increase coverage and my speaker count to four and thought a next size speaker up with a bit more bass might be in order. Over time, I ordered/tried two other, popular and well rated outdoor speakers to fit the desired need and for various reasons returned both. Quite frankly, neither sounded any better than my old 4’s. Both cost more. I then ordered some Prime Days, “used-like new” 5’s for a fantastic price ($148) and am delighted that I did😁 Third time/try was indeed the charm! Not only do they fill the space with quality/balanced tone, I now know that my outdoor sound 🎶 needs are more than satisfied for many dependable years to come! There’s a reason that this Atrium series from Polk has been the outdoor standard setter for over a decade, I should have never wandered/doubted. Lesson learned. ... show more

I wanted outdoor speakers to get sound to my patio and pool area. My budget was only $200 so I wasn't sure what I would find. At first I was looking at the Polk Atrium 45 and the Yamaha NS-AW570WH. After researching more on the Polk and Yamaha websites, I found the new Atrium 5 series from Polk seemed to fit my needs the best, but the price was a little over my budget. I was surprised when I found them here on Amazon at such a great price. Interesting that the white version is selling at list price while the black is discounted 30%. They can both be painted so I jumped at the chance to get the black speakers at a significant savings. I'm very pleased with my purchase. I have a 15' deep covered patio. I have the speakers mounted under the patio on the wall of the house. These little speakers have no problem throwing sound all the way to the end of the pool 45' away from the speakers. The nice thing too is that the sound stays where I want it and I can enjoy it without bothering my side neighbors. I have them mounted near the ceiling so I get good bass response. My Yamaha RX-V3900 receiver has 3 zones so now I can listen to music at the pool while the kids watch movies or play video games on the main TV. In the end I decided not to paint the speakers. They look very nice in black and actually blend in well with my house. They actually blend in better than the white speakers would have. I can't comment on how well they will hold up in the outdoors. The military specs they are designed to meet make me think they will be superb. Plus they have a 5 year warranty. My mounting position also helps since it's nearly impossible for them to ever see rain, although they will see hot Texas sun at times. Overall, excellent speakers at this price. ... show more
