I stated in a review of a similar DVD burner product about spending a few more shekels to get something decent. This Blu Ray burner cost quite a bit more at $130 but it is well worth it as it works well. I used it to test it and viewed the DVD on a large screen television. This one is a keeper for me as it works much quicker than the burners that come with the computers. Bottom line: Spending a bit more for a decent product will save you grief in the long run. Update 1: The cover tends to vibrate when in use. When I touch or move the burner the noise and vibration does stop. It doesn't appear to affect operation for now but my rating is going down to four stars for now. Update 2: Found the cause of the vibration as the drive needs a stable surface. I bought this as a work around to my laptop not playing Blu Ray Discs and can not be upgarded to do so. This drive requires spending another $99 to play Blu-Ray Discs.

If you've had a problem locating an external drive that will work with the new versions of MacOSx like 11.2.2 (Big Sur) then this is the drive for you. Works read/writing DVDs and Reading/Writing Blu-Rays. So many drives say 10.6 (or equivalent) or above are not advertising correctly. I have tried three others with no success. ... show more

Tried this product out based on other reviews. I needed to archive email and downloads to disc (could not use USB flash drive, which would have been much faster, cheaper and easier overall). In prep for re-imaging laptop, I needed to free up storage space on the HDD. DVD's were too small for 200+ GB of email. I had some issues burning to the disc that came with the unit, could not get it to burn. Had to purchase more discs to test out fully. BD-R (Blue Ray Disc) discs are spendy ($41 for pack of 10). Takes a while (25-30 mins) to burn files so be patient. Note- You will not get a full 100GB on the disc, there is overhead, i believe the best you can get is about 90-93GB. I had to break up my PST files into chunks (used 7-Zip). Seems to work as expected. I like the portability and design. I knocked off a star due to the issue with the included 100GB disk which ended up costing me more $ to complete my project. ... show more

This is a lightweight, and easy to use external Blu-ray player that does everything I could require from an optical drive. Most laptops don't come with optical drives because the vast majority of software and other content is available via download from the internet. That being said, I still find myself in need of an optical drive for other tasks like burning images and being able to continue using software that I purchased years ago that's still on optical media. What I have to say is about the company Pioneer. This was my second and last Disc burner I will ever buy from them. The receptical on the burners are pathetic. They are so temperamental that even the slightest downward movement of the wire can cut off the power and readability of the burners. I have wasted time with projects failing to complete burning when it's even over 90% done with the burn. ... show more

Plug and play - no software required. Worked great right out of the box unlike drives using the Matshita drive mechanism. Had numerous problems with them. Reads blu-rays at 2.0X speed and DVDs up to 10X speed.
