Laptops are no longer sold with an integrated optical drive. I had to get an external optical drive in order to install the software that I usually buy in DVD format. This optical drive is exactly what I was looking for. It was easy to install and I have successfully used it to install my application software. I have not tried using it as a DVD writer but I think that may not be one of its functions. ... show more

My new HP laptop had no CD ROM and I had several programs I needed to install using their CD or DVDs. At the Amazon site there were many choices, all with conflicting reviews. I decided to order a HP (for compatibility) mid price ($60) hoping that everything would work. None of my CD or DVD install discs worked. My recommendations: 1. Don't buy this CD ROM 2. Don't buy a HP laptop (no CD ROM, only 2 USB ports, internal WIFI receiver defective, etc,) ... show more
