I had given up hope that I could ever find a device like this again! I was looking to rip a demo CD I'd made years ago at The Music Place in Berlin, NJ. Well, it was the Recording Studio arm of the establishment, "TMP Recording Studios," if I recall correctly. I loved it. I wish it were still around. The Studio, I mean. But times change. There aren't many of these recording studios left, Everything is Home Studios now I suppose. Which offers a certain amount of democratization for the musically inclined (talented is a different story) to be sure, and that's not a bad thing. But there is something to be said for getting the band together, rehearsed, and then making a sound in the studio. The camaraderie of listening to the playback. The feeling of hopelessness as your part is lowered in the mix. Then, take the cassette rough mix out to the car to see how it sounds there. And having a cigarette while you're out there. 30-some years ago, everybody mostly smoked, even in restaurants. Granted, you had to sit in a separate section. Thinking on it now, it was really weird. You'd walk in, and the hostess (or host, we didn't have as many gender stratifications back then) would ask "How many?" and then "Smoking or non?" Imagine if you heard that today! "Smoke? Smoke what?" you'd probably think. Smoke ... marijuana? Because that's LEGAL now, at least here in New Jersey. There's practically a dispensary on every corner. In fact, we have more dispensaries in town than Wawas! It probably wouldn't make sense to add more Wawas, though. We did get a Super Wawa out on 322 recently, which replaced the little old-style Wawa just down the road from the High School. But still no Sheetz. We did get a Royal Farms out on Cross Keys Road, but that's been the extent of the Convenience Store conflict so far. I did get some jerky from Buc-ee's last year. A colleague had been traveling and picked some up for me as a souvenir, which was really thoughtful. I appreciated that gesture. So that's why I recommend this External CD/ DVD Drive. ... show more

I'm not technically inclined, so it did take a bit of time to download the necessary app. [BTW, device works only with the proprietary app.] I've only used one commercial DVD so far [Dexter so, if it matters.] But playback went well, nice & crisp, good sound. I don't need a bunch of bells & whistles, just the typical viewing-- play, FF, REW, pause, skip. Those worked just fine.. CONS I would have liked a 10-30 second rewind, as I sometimes miss a sentence or piece of action. The disc tray is slow to respond & needs to be manually extended to place/remove the disc. I've heard this is standard on an external drive, but it still bothers me. All in all, it does all it needs to & is worth the money. The cable is short. Works great, bought it to use CDs from my library. I would recommend downloading a better CD player program than the Windows program! Reminds me of saving NMR spectra on CDs.

Bought this to rip dvd's to my hard drive for personal use. Has been working perfectly fine after about 25 dvd rips. Takes somewhere between 15 and 50 minutes, depending on the size and content of the dvd. It has had trouble reading one or two of the discs, but generally works across the board.
