  • Cool Lights but Manufacturing Defect (you can fix) and 2 Design Flaws
Style: Discovery Floodlight
The media could not be loaded. UPDATED (May 14, 2019) with night time photos. Note that there are 3 lights across the back of the house which easily light up an area that is about 120 ft long by 35 ft deep. I've been waiting to get my hands on these new Philips Hue Discovery outdoor color LED flood lights since they were announced at CSE in January. The wait is finally over but there are some issues with both the design and manufacturing that makes installing these more difficult than it needs to be. Also, the mounting bracket hardware could have been made from a stronger more ridged metal and there should have been a tiny wrench included to be able to tighten the nearly microscopic decorative cap nuts that hold everything to the wall. Or better yet, make the nuts bigger and include a spare! WARNING, if you drop one of the tiny little rubber washers or cap nuts your probably not going to find it unless your installing these light over a solid surface like a patio or driveway. If you drop them into decorative rocks or grass, GOOD LUCK! Manufacturing Defect: The wall plate and mounting arm are not level. (SEE PICTURES and VIDEO) I ordered 5 of these lights and they all have the same, very noticeable, defect which appears to be the result of something being a little out of spec with the mounting arm, and/or significant over torquing of the screws that attach the arm to the wall plate. However, there is a "fix" to get them more level. When looking at the back of the wall plate, you will see two screws in the center that attach the arm to the wall plate. (SEE PICTURE with Green Arrows) By slightly loosening those two screws you can adjust the arm to make it level with the wall plate, or at least very close to level. I was able to hold the arm in place and retighten the screws enough to where I'm sure they aren't going to come loose on their own. If you make them as tight as they were out of the box (which seems excessive) the arm will start to twist out of alignment again. 2 Design Flaws: First, the way the red and black wires for the led driver are routed inside the wall plate, they are pretty much running over the top of one of the holes used for the mounting bracket screws. (SEE PICTURE) There is almost no way to avoid the wires rubbing against the threads of the mounting screw. If you aren't careful during installation, you could potentially damage a wire or cut into the insulation around them, possibly causing a short. Second, the holes inside the wall plate for the 2 mounting screws don't extend far enough and getting them lined up with the screws on the mounting bracket for installation can be frustrating when you're 12 feet off the ground on a latter. It's even more difficult to get the holes lined up with the screws while making sure not to pinch or damage one of those red and black wires that are running right over one of the holes, all without being able to see. My suggestion for Philips is to have the holes for the mounting screws extend further so they are as close to being flush with the back edges of the wall plate. Since the holes are recessed so far into the wall plate, you can't use your finger to feel where the hole is and help get the screws lined up without being able to see them. Also, by extending the screw hole posts, the issue with the led driver wires running over the top of the hole would be avoided as the hole posts would stick out further and the wires can be run under or over the posts. That would keep the wires out of the way and protected from damage during install. Oh ya, it would have been nice if a gasket was included to help seal the edges around the wall plate once it's installed. The mounting hardware isn't ridged enough to really tighten them down and fit snugly against the wall for a weatherproof seal, it flexes too easily. The installation instructions do call for caulking around the fixture which will work but makes install, removal or replacement messier then needed vs. a simple gasket. Overall, I'm happy with the styling and way these light operate, good color range and they are attractive fixtures. As for durability, I will see how they hold up in the Arizona heat in the next few month. They are affordable and the overall quality seems to be inline with what one would expect at that price point but it seems like Philips could tweak a couple minor things to make these a great value and much easier to install. I haven't seen how much light they put out at night yet but will update this review once I see how they perform. ... show more

  • Major design failure - Don't buy this light unless you have a recessed electrical box.
Style: Discovery Floodlight
The back of this light is fully exposed with no back cover or plate. You can ONLY use it with a recessed in wall electrical box. Surface mounted electrical boxes won't work. How much more would it have been to include a back plate in the box or made it an option you can purchase? Super frustrated after waiting so long to get the light and now I can't use it. I hope Hue reaches out to me so I can vent my disappointed. I wish I could have made the rating zero stars because in my case this light is useless. ... show more

  • Awesome lights, horrible mounting!
Style: Discovery Floodlight
The media could not be loaded. I was one of the very first consumers to purchase this product. In fact, I purchased all three of mine from Amazon when they were first offered for sale. If you've considered purchasing this floodlight, there are a few things that you NEED to know. Let's just get a few things out of the way. First off, are the lights bright? Yes, they are very colorful and bright. My wife and I love the output of each floodlight. I've uploaded a video of my backyard privacy patio. ALL of the lights featured in my video are from Philips (now Signify). My 12 individual bulbs are 3rd gen Philips Hue Color + White. You can clearly see each one of those individual bulbs in the video. The three Philips Hue Discover Outdoor White & Color Ambiance Floodlights are each mounted behind all three of my 4 foot Texas Lone Stars. These floodlights were immediately detectable by my Philips Bridge and I was able to have them working in tandem with my other Philips lights. I have NO complaints about the floodlights performance. The video speaks for itself. You can compare the output of the line-of-sight Hue bulbs to the output of the indirect lighting of the Hue floodlights. With all of the good mentioned about these floodlights in my review, here's the issue. In a word: MOUNTING. The solution for mounting these floodlights are ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. For a floodlight of this caliber, the mounting solution is one of the worse I've ever seen. Each light comes with two cheap brackets that mount in a shape that's similar to a plus sign and held together by one center screw and one pivot screw. It gets even worse. If you unbox the floodlights and set them flat on a table or counter top, you will immediately notice that these floodlights are not perfectly symmetrical. The mounts come with two longer type metal screws but the screw holes that are punched into the bracket are totally off center from each other. This causes a secondary issue. It's an additional issue that causes this floodlight to be even more off center when it's mounted up. So, the consumer is left with an issue. Do you want the base of your light to be perfectly symmetrical on the surface to which you have mounted it? If so, your floodlight will be canted off center to one side. It is VERY noticeable. It will look very lopsided like you really messed up on installing your floodlight. So, you are left with a dilemma. Is it possible to have your floodlight facing towards you and appear level / symmetrical (or wherever you plan on facing it)? Yes, but once you do that, the base of the floodlight will now be completely lopsided. Again, it will look like you messed up the install. For me, it was less of an issue because each one of my floodlights are not directly in view and are hidden behind my Texas Lone Stars. Another issue for this light is weather-proofing. There is no back plate, there is no gasket and there is no rubberized sealer that would help keep out the elements. The backside of the floodlight is just open. Again, a floodlight of this caliber and at this price point is unacceptable, especially by today's standards. A gasket or back plate would have cost Philips no more than $3 - $4 to manufacture (maybe even MUCH less than $3 - $4). Instead, Philips wants you to buy some silicone caulking and glop it around the edges of the base of their floodlight. So, I'm at a crossroad here. I can ABSOLUTELY recommend this floodlight based on its' performance and in the same breath, I CANNOT recommend this floodlight to those who truly need an off-the-shelf weather enduring outdoor floodlight. If you can put up with the floodlight being crooked to one side or the other, then knock yourself out and enjoy your purchase. 5 STARS FOR COLORFUL AND RICH FLOODLIGHT PERFORMANCE. 1 STAR FOR AN UNACCEPTABLE MOUNTING / WEATHER PROOFING OUTDOOR FLOODLIGHT. ... show more

  • Avoid this light, its impossible to mount w/current design
Style: Discovery Floodlight
Ok, so after 2 tries on a ladder for 2.5hrs each time I gave up in frustration and used this tape to hold the darn thing to the wall, i was going to try landscape adhesive, but will try one more time. the light works fines, the installation is horrible, trying to align the 2 screws so they go through the tiny holes while holding the fixture and trying to not drop the tiny black nuts that hold it in place is a real chore let me tell you, after all that time I could only get one or the other through, i almost three the fixture out of frustration. not happy with this design. i've replaced tons of outlets, fixtures, switches, fans and this one is by far the most challenging. i may need to use a lamp mounting block and kludge my own fix. i don't have any suggestions on how to fix this except flatten the wall plate and move the electronics to the light section. UPDATE: I can't express in words how much I hate this light, if they just extended the screw columns 1/4" they would be easier to line up, after an excruciating 4 hrs in the hot 100F sun, this light won, and it had to be destroyed. I want an apology and refund from phillips, for the cuts, lost drill bits, and 18 hrs of wasted time. ... show more
