Style: 20 Gauge Wire Kit Size: 500 ft (1/3 Acre)
We are really happy with our purchase. This is our first in-ground fencing system, so we have nothing to compare it to, but so far, it lives up to our expectations. We bought an extra 500 feet of wire (standard 20 gauge) & 50 flags kit so that we could fence in almost 1 acre of land. We have plenty of wire left over for repairs. In YardMax mode, the dog has to actually cross over the wire to get a shock, so it maximizes your space - just be sure to put the wire well away from the road or other danger areas (they recommend at least 10 feet, but I would go further than that, as a dog running at full speed can get far, fast). We chose not to bury the wire, so it's held down into the grass with anchor staples (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FA9SBG/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_1), and that works really well (except on the odd occasion when we accidentally hit it with the weed whacker). Splicing is very easy, though. The only place we buried the wire was under the driveway (inside a rubber hose, as recommended). One thing we have learned is that if you twist 3 layers of wire together, it will *not* cancel the signal ([...]"). Due to our weird yard shape and access to power from inside the house, it took us a bit to figure out the best way to lay out the wire. The instructions have diagrams that help visualize it, so that was helpful. Our system is in the basement, which has an open-concept stairwell. We were worried that we wouldn't hear the alarm if the wire broke, but it's loud enough for us. If I had difficulty hearing or if my basement was more closed off, it would probably be better on the main floor. We went with this model because we read that collar batteries are very expensive on the other non-rechargeable models ($100 per battery which only lasts about a year!). After 2 months of use, we've only had to charge the collar once. It takes about 3 hours to charge. The green light had not turned orange or red to indicate that it needed charging, but I charged it after a month just to be safe. We have a 4.5 lb Yorkie, and were worried that the collar would be too large for him. It's a bit bulky for hist tiny neck, but he manages just fine. We followed the training instructions to the letter, and it worked very well. The training instructions are quite simple and clear. Our dog picked up on the concept right away and will not cross the line now. The trick is to make sure the collar fits properly every time you put it on him (particularly during training) so that he gets a shock if he crosses. He learned fast after 2-3 shocks. He's a timid dog, so setting #3 works for him (the 2nd lowest shock setting, since setting #1 is tone-only for training). One interesting thing we've learned is that he's a very "tough" dog when he's on the leash and we're standing behind him. When he's lose on his own, he's not so tough anymore (which is good, as I was worried he would attack gophers and dogs walking by, but he runs away from them when we're not with him). We leave the collar on him all day and take it off at night (unless the weather is bad and we know he will only go out a few times). It's wonderful to see him free, and we are so glad we made the leap to an in-ground fence. I guess my only complaint is that it would be nice if they gave more than two splice kits with the fence and with the extra wire kit. Otherwise, we are very happy. ... show more

Style: 20 Gauge Wire Kit Size: 500 ft (1/3 Acre)
This product has saved my sanity and greatly enhanced our Golden Retriever’s quality of life! No more “Houdini acts” from our dog Boomer since installing this system. Setup- The instructions are clear and thorough. I was able to set the system up within two days, covering over an acre of land. The hardest part of the setup was twisting the wires back to the house for a neutral line, but once using a power drill, it went quickly. I did buy extra wire and flags. We have a tight space around part of our home, but also a wide open space that stops at the tree line/ natural yard and the A setting works perfectly. I buried all the wire close to the house but waited for falling leaves to cover the most of spots near the tree/ brush line. Training- I took 2 days to train but I continued the training up for 3 more days just to be sure our dog understood his space. He was definitely timid for a couple of weeks and cautiously explored his new parameters before he was able to 100% enjoy his free time/ roaming. We played with him in the larger spaces to make sure he understood he wouldn’t get a beep or shock for fetching a ball within the flagged area. I kept the flags up for about two to three months, slowly removing them once I was certain our pup was familiar with his boundaries. Golden Retrievers are notoriously one of the more difficult breeds to contain with these sorts of systems. From experience, even with being out in the yard with him constantly, if my attention wasn’t 100% on him, our Golden would dart away in a second to visit neighbors. He was determined to spread his sunny personality with everyone he could before getting outted or frantic calling to come home. Collar Battery- The collar stays charged for an extremely long period of time. Our Golden isn’t testing the boundaries regularly so there isn’t extra strain on the device. The most he needs is a beep to move back to his safe space. Full disclosure- We do not leave our Golden outside when we are away, even for a quick outing. He is able to be trusted while we are at home to do his business and a solo stroll around the property. We do have to keep an eye out for him still, mainly because he’s become a hole digger. We have neighboring dogs that come into his parameter and play, but he stays in his designated area regardless. We also have children that use our yard as a path between neighborhoods and he is a “good boy” whether they give him attention or not. Customer service-We purchased this unit 9/12/21 and the collar stopped turning on but was still charging. I contacted customer service, spoke with a lovely representative, and a new device free of charge is being sent in the next 3 to 5 days. I don’t even think he will notice but for now he has a remote training collar on for a “just in case.” ... show more
