🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The PetSafe Doggie Door proved to be a reliable and fitting addition for pet owners who wish to offer their furry companions more liberty when it comes to entering and exiting the home. The patrons appreciated the sliding track, locking pin, and quality flap systems, and the product's overall durability. There seems to be some challenges correlating to the single hatch systems which aren't as weather resistant, but creative solutions were found by some customers.

Pros

  • 🐾 Dogs adapted swiftly and seemed to appreciate the product.
  • 🏡 Provides security when away from home with sliding track and locking pin.
  • 💪 Proves to be durable, withstanding years of use.

Cons

  • 🔧 Some instances of modifying or needing to be creative to make the product fit into certain spaces or achieve dual flap systems.
  • 🌬️ Single flap system allows for a draft to enter the house during colder months.
  • 💰 Might need to purchase two items to achieve the desired setup leading to potential additional cost.

Should I Buy It?

If the cost is not a hindrance and you are prepared to possibly make slight modifications, the PetSafe Doggie Door is highly recommended for its security, ease of use for pets, and endurance. It's a notable investment that would significantly benefit your pet's liberty and security in the household.

  • Sliding track safety door & locking pin.
Size: Large
This is a great doggie door. There has been a 1 piece glass door / doggie mounted into my glass slider door when I bought my house from the old owner. So I gave the door a shot my dogs being my first experience with a doggie door. My dogs got used to it fast and love it. What I really like about it is the plastic door hatch that slides in a door track with a locking safety pin. We close the hatch at night and when we’re not home for safety reasons to keep other animals from coming in our house when we are not around. It’s safe and secure and give you the piece of mind. Well fast forward a couple years of use and we have pulled out our glass slider door and replaced with custom French doors. So I liked the Petsafe Doggie door I’ve had wanted to buy a new one to install into my new French doors. The draw back with the sliding track cover door that I’ve had and wanted to purchase was it only comes with a single weather hatch that does let a little cold air into the house during the winter months. So I looked for the dual hatch style door for more energy efficient on my new French doors. This company does make dual hatch doors but they all come with a plastic snap on style cover that doesn’t seem safe to keep out other animals from coming into your house when your not home. I live in Washington State near the woods and it’s not uncommon for a larger animal such as a raccoon or ??? ( which we have near our house ) to scurry around the back yard getting into trouble at night. They could easily push on the outside of those doggie doors with the snap on covers and pop it open and come into your house!! So I definitely wanted the slide in track cover model with the locking pin but with the dual hatch/flaps which this company doesn’t offer at this time. So reading reviews and searching for other doggie doors. Another customer gave an great idea in his review about buying 2 of these siding track door models and putting the flap sections on either side of the door to make 1 dual flap door with the sliding track security. I’ve followed the recommendation and it worked out great. My dogs have gotten used to the double flap vs. single flap and it’s better weather resistant for the cold months. And yes, go to the hardware store and buy metal replacement screws instead of the plastic ones as all other customer recommend. Still, the only drawback with my set up is since the company doesn’t currently sell my exact sliding track & dual flap door. You end up spending more money to buy 2 doggie doors vs 1 door. A profit win for this company but a financial lose for you. But the finished product I have is great. ... show more

  • Sturdy with a good seal
Size: Large
We've been looking for a replacement flap for our old dog door which is placed in a wall not a door. Since we have been unable to find the correct size after five years, we gave up and resigned ourselves to getting a new door. I chose this door because it was closest in size to our existing door- any smaller and our largest dog wouldn't fit and we were limited in how large it could be due to wiring in the wall. This door is designed to be placed in a door, not wall, but since we already had the wall framed for a dog door this worked just fine with some slight adjustments to the framing. The nicest thing about this door is that the flap creates a good seal and I can't feel any air coming in. Since this is designed to go into a door, it comes with very long, white, nylon screws that match the frame and can be snapped off to the appropriate length then screwed into the accompanying screw sleeves. Since we were attaching to framing we used our own metal screws. This means we have visible screws around the frame as well as where the flap attaches. Fortunately we had many white screw caps around and were able to use those to make the screws "disappear". The caps don't interfere with the closing of the locking cover. I like this well enough that I just ordered a second one to place on the outside of the hole. They do make double flap dog doors which are the most energy efficient option. But our wall if fairly thick and two of these seemed like a better choice for about the same price. In addition, when it is over 110 degrees here I cover the dog door to restrict the amount of time they spend outside. The two locking covers and subsequent air space between increases the "insulation" and our summer electric bill needs all the help it can get. ... show more

  • UPGRADED EXISTING TO DUAL FLAP EASILY
Size: Large
I had a large PetSafe single flap door installed at my old house into an unconditioned space. Never worried too much how it sealed. I installed one in my new house where it does go into a conditioned space, and noticed many times the flap did not reconnect with the bottom magnet, and a small breeze kept it open. I started looking at dual flap models to stop the draft, but all were a different size. Since I actually had the door specifically made with a cutout for this exact door, I did not want to start cutting to fit another model. MY SOLUTION - I bought a second PetSafe door. I removed the outside trim ring of the existing unit (the one without the flap), and installed the flap half of the new door on the outside. It has been working perfectly!! Since the aluminum frame is made with 4 pieces of extruded aluminum, held together by 4 corner brackets crimped in place, there is some flex in the corners of the frame. With the normal single flap installation, the outside trim fits inside the interior trim where they cover the wood of the door. My dual flap install, using the flex in the way the frame is held together, allowed the second flap frame to flex open a bit and slide outside the original flap frame. I had to widen the holes for the 4 plastic mounting screws - the outside ring has sleeves that slide into the frame for the screws to screw into, so the holes in the non-flap frame are bigger than the flap frame. A 5/16" bit did the trick. I will say that ocassionally one flap does not seat properly, but the other does. This only happens about 5-10% of the time, but still breaks the draft on the other flap, allowing to to function correctly. The other 90-95% of the time both flaps are holding on to the bottom magnet as they should, and the upgrade was less than $50 & required no cutting. That's much better than $150 - $250 for a dual flap model that I would have had to change the existing hole size. ... show more
