  • FINALLY, the fountain of my cats' (and my!) dreams!
Color: White Style: Fountain
The media could not be loaded. NOTE: I've updated this review every few years, with the most recent update at the bottom; hope this helps! I've been through a few water fountains over the years: the Drinkwell Classic, Drinkwell Platinum, Drinkwell 360 Stainless, and now the Drinkwell Ceramic Pagoda. The Pagoda is the clear winner for me & my cats! About a month ago, I purchased the Drinkwell 360 Stainless Fountain when my Drinkwell Platinum started getting harder & harder to keep clean, and when I read that plastic parts can contribute to feline acne & harbor bacteria. After researching the different fountains, I had settled on the stainless Drinkwell 360. While it's better than the plastic models, there were still some drawbacks: the spouts are still plastic (and that's where one of my cats likes to lap up water) so I still had a concern about the plastic/acne connection. And even though I read about the dimensions of the unit, it still took up a larger footprint in my small kitchen than I thought it would (admittedly, that's my fault for not measuring). There was also an inconsistency with the assembly instructions (see my review of the Drinkwell Stainless 360 for more info). Also (and this is not necessarily a fault of the fountain), one of my cats took quite a while to get used to it, even though he'd been drinking out of a fountain for years. After using it for a couple of weeks, I discovered a newer model: the Drinkwell all-Ceramic Pagoda Fountain. After finding out that one of my co-workers would buy the 360 Stainless from me, I then got the Pagoda...it is MUCH better. Except for the pump and filter housing, it's all-ceramic, so there is no direct contact with plastic for the cats. It's MUCH better-looking, takes up less space, and offers three choices for the cats: drink out of the bowl (which my kitten does), drink out of one of two spouts, or drink from the top tier where the water bubbles up (which my older cat likes--he doesn't have to stoop to drink; he can drink sitting upright). Both cat & kitten took to it immediately. Also, the cleaning & reassembly is even EASIER with this model. Cleaning took less than 10 minutes. And the bonus point? It's really a beautiful fountain compared to the others, too. HELPFUL HINT: If you want a comprehensive, one-stop site to research ALL the different brands & models of water fountains out there, I HIGHLY recommend [...] This site gives you the pluses & minuses of every fountain out there and also includes short videos of cats drinking from each type of fountain! I wish I had found this site before I had purchased the Stainless 360 model, but I don't believe the Ceramic Pagoda was available yet anyway. ***Edited 4/25/14 to add: It will be one year next week that I've had the Pagoda fountain and my cats (and I) still love it. I use bottled water to fill it, so there's no hard water buildup. I clean it once a week, replacing the charcoal filter every 3 weeks and the foam "pre-filter" every 6 weeks. Cleaning takes 10 minutes. For those who don't like the sound of trickling water: if you keep the fountain full to within 1/4" of the top, you will barely hear it. ***Edited 4/10/16 to add: I've had the Pagoda fountain for nearly three years now, and it is still working perfectly and looks absolutely pristine. I stick to the same cleaning schedule mentioned above (weekly) and you would never guess that this fountain is anything other than brand-new. Both cats still love it, and this year I've included a video of my 14-year old, Tux, drinking from it. :) ***Edited 3/13/18 to add: It will be FIVE years this May that I've had the Pagoda fountain and have only just now experienced my first problem: the covering of the electrical wire became exposed where it folds over the ceramic "pipe"--I'm not sure of the technical term, but please see the photo I added. It *might* have been ok since the wires themselves weren't exposed, but I was worried about the combination of water and electricity so decided not to chance it. Fortunately, I was able to get a replacement pump on Amazon for $16, and with Prime, the shipping was free and I got it in two days. Other than that, the fountain still looks and works like brand-new, and both my cats still love it. For those who were worried that the silicon/rubber cap that covers the "pipe" would wear out, rest assured that part is much more durable than it looks. I clean the fountain once a week, which means that part has been taken off and on well over 200 times without ripping or tearing. All in all, considering it's almost 5 years old and this is the first issue I've had, that's not bad. I still highly recommend it! ***Edited 7/29/21 to add: It has now been EIGHT years since I bought this fountain, and with continued proper care (weekly cleanings) it is still pristine and works like new. And my newly adopted kitten, Devon, loves it (he drinks from the stream and from the bowl). I have had no further issues other than the one in 2018 mentioned above. I still highly recommend this fountain! ... show more

  • Small but attractive and my favourite of 3 Drinkwell fountains so far (comparison with Platinum and 360 Stainless)
Color: White Style: Fountain
This is the third Drinkwell fountain I've owned (preceded by the Platinum and then the Stainless 360). I've been happy with the quality of all three, but the ceramic Pagoda is my favourite. I should mention that I've had three not because of any issues with any of the models (they've all worked well and I've passed my former fountains on and they're still going strong, years later), I'm just a sucker for nice new products. The Platinum was great in terms of water reservoir and introducing a fountain to my two cats, however the grey plastic wasn't very attractive and I wanted to get away from plastic (because of cleaning issues and concern with reading about the potential for plastic water dishes to cause cat acne). I found the stainless 360 much more attractive than the Platinum - important, given it was quite a big bit of kitchen furniture. As another reviewer noted, it has a large footprint; it also has three black plastic clips which are essential for holding the cone and bowl together and which break up the otherwise clean line of the steel and are a bit fiddly when cleaning the unit. While it was easier to keep clean than the Platinum, it did get some visible mineral build-up from the water which I couldn't get off without strong products. A big plus with the 360 which I haven't seen with other models was being able to use a re-fillable water filter with it (also purchased through Amazon) which was a big reduction in consumables to keep it operating. Overall I was pretty happy with the 360, but then I saw the new ceramic offerings and decided I had to give the Pagoda a try. The Pagoda has a very clean line and is nice and compact. This means it needs filling more often than the 360 or the Platinum, but will still get through several days between top-ups without trouble. The water noise is a bit more pronounced than the other fountains were - it's a definite 'fountain' noise of falling water (whereas the Platinum was almost silent and the 360 definitely quieter). However there's no mechanical noises from the pump, just the trickling water noise. The water stream has a good flow to it - more appealing to my tap-obsessed cat than the weaker flow from the 360. (The 360 came with multiple rings to give options of 1-5 outlets for the water, but I found that any more than 2 meant the water didn't come out with enough force to stream, and would just run down the side of the cone. The design of the Pagoda seems to do a better job of getting the water to project out). Assembling the Pagoda was very easy - it really is just resting one piece on another. They seem to sit well, but my cats also aren't prone to knocking things about - if you expect your fountain to get accidental knocks something like the 360, which has a definite locking mechanism holding the components together, might be more suitable. Overall, I'd recommend any Drinkwell fountain for reliable operation. I really like the Pagoda and it's getting lots of good use but a household with more than 2 animals might find it a bit small. Also if you get irritated by falling water noise, this is not the pet fountain for you - get the Platinum or another where the falling water runs down a surface rather than hitting the water. Finally a note on packaging - I was a little concerned about how well the ceramic would handle international shipping, but it was very well packed in its box and Amazon did a good job with the second layer around that. ... show more
