  • He can't tear this kennel apart
This kennel is awesome. We adopted a beagle/terrier rescue & he has severe separation anxiety when I leave. He can't be loose in the house while we are gone, even for 15 minutes, because he gets so anxious that he destroys my house. He destroyed his wire kennel - broke off the handles, bent wires, & broke wires. I thought I would try this one when another customer stated that his dog couldn't destroy it. He's RIGHT!!!! My dog can't destroy it. There is no way that he can get anything to break or pull. He still gets very anxious, but he cannot tear apart this kennel. I highly recommend this kennel to anyone that has a very anxious dog. ... show more

  • Not Durable. Arrived with broken corners.
Not durable.Mine arrived with busted corners. That tells me that if this did not ship well that it cannot transport well either. A dog may be able to damage this carrier easily and end up with injury. I would not recommend this carrier.

  • Small lab with separation anxiety broke out of this
We bought this last month because our recently adopted black lab (currently 28 lbs) ruined her metal cage crate due to severe separation anxiety. The reviews stated that this crate would hold up to dogs with separation anxiety, which is why we bought this over other options. The third time we left our dog alone in it, she had broken out of it. At first, I didn't believe my wife that she had shut the door all the way, but when I shut the dog in it, I pulled on the door as hard as I could and could not open it. I then left the dog at home for 10 minutes, and came home to see that she had broken out. ... show more

  • Happy Camper
I bought this kennel for my active Corgi mix pup after he rampaged through a metal mesh kennel. I needed some way to be able to confine him and keep him from tearing apart the house. This kennel arrived with a small hole punch in the top back edge, like it was bumped into something during manufacture or packaging. The packaging was fine and I don't think it happened in transport, especially since the missing piece wasn't in the box. The defect didn't affect the structural integrity of the product and was merely a cosmetic blemish. The crate secures nicely, and there is a small hole along the top edge of the entrance where one can put zip ties for extra security during travel. Since I'm not using it for travel I simply drop a nail through the hole and that prevents the door from opening should the dog somehow get through the latches. The latches seem strong and are easy to use, and I've not had any problem with them not holding. The dog has chewed the plastic along the bottom inside edge but that hasn't affected the function of the crate. So far the crate has worked very well. My dog is a little over 30 lbs and fits comfortably. He can stand and turn and seems fairly content once he realizes he's being crated for awhile. He now sleeps in the crate all night long without a peep, thank goodness. Other than the inconsequential hole along the top, the crate has met all my expectations. I can't give a recommendation for travel, but for home use it has worked well, appears sturdy, and my dog seems to like it. ... show more

  • This is the real deal!
Vari Kennels are the real deal that you see professional breeders, handlers, and precious show dogs using all over the world. If you get the right size, a Petmate Ultra Vari Kennel can be a joy and last a lifetime. Petmate Ultra Vari Kennels come in several sizes, including: 1) Vari Kennel 200 (28 x 20.5 x 21.5 inches), 2) Vari Kennel 300 (32 x 22.5 x 24 inches), 3) Vari Kennel 400 (36 x 25 x 27 inches), and 4) Vari Kennel 400 (40 x 27 x 30 inches). WHAT IS A PETMATE ULTRA VARI KENNEL?: The Petmate Ultra Vari Kennel is a two-piece recycled plastic enclosure with a metal door (that opens with one hand), metal side windows, and ventilations holes in the rear. It is surprisingly sturdy and yet free of sharp surfaces that could hurt a dog, and it allows for plenty of ventilation. The box is formed from two plastic clam shells held together with metal bolts and plastic spin-on nuts. The old crates used to use metal nuts (search Dry Fur Pet Carrier Metal Fasteners Nuts Bolts). There are holes for cable ties to keep the kennel and door closed during travel. (You can get quick release cable ties from Helping Hand FQ50214 Cable Ties 8" Quick Release 15 — just pinch the center of the tie to release.) This model has recessed handles on the sides — it has no top handle but there is a place for a handle if you can find/make one. It is easier for two people to carry. HOW DO I GET THE RIGHT SIZE?: The point of the kennel is to hold your dog comfortably while he sleeps and waits until something happens. Invariably, people pick kennels that are too big (I’ve done it, too), thinking that their poor doggie won’t fit in such a little space. Surprise! Unlike humans, dogs like to be in a smaller space with walls where they can curl up against the side, brace with their legs, and hide out. Think of it as living in a dog-sized cave. The best way I’ve found to size these things is to sneak up on your dog while he is sleeping and measure the length of his body in contact with the floor or bed -- don't forget to include the the parts of his legs and paws that stick out. Do it a few times. You will find out that most sleeping dogs curl up and pull in their appendages to be much smaller than when they are active. Use the average sleeping length as the length of your kennel. Measure your dog to make sure he can stand up in the crate, although he probably won’t be doing a lot of standing. Ignore the width. Others suggest that you measure the dog’s body length and add the length of his front leg. When the kennel arrives, you will know for sure. Vari Kennel 200 is often suggested for small dogs weighting 25-30 pounds and the Vari Kennel 300 is often suggested for medium dogs weighing 30-50 pounds, but these approximations aren’t very useful. HOW DO I PUT IT TOGETHER?: Assembling the Petmate Ultra Vari Kennel is easy and requires no tools. It will arrive in two pieces with a plastic bag full of bolts and nuts. Put the bottom (dark) half on the floor, cover it with the top (light) half, and wiggle the top around until the screw holes on top and bottom match (sort-of). Then, take a bolt in your hand, and insert it thread side up into one of the rear holes. You may have to wiggle more to get the holes lined up. Then push the bolt all the way through, start the nut ½ turn on the top of the bolt, and screw it down or spin it until the nut is finger tight. If you want the metal door, spread the two plastic halves to insert it in the front depressions. Then insert and finger tighten all the rest of the bolts and nuts. For the Petmate Ultra Vari Kennel to be sturdy, all the bolts must be in place and finger tight. HOW CAN I USE THE PETMATE ULTRA VARI KENNEL?: 1) You can use your Petmate Ultra Vari Kennel with the door off as a reassuring place for your dog to sleep at night. 2) You can use the Vari Kennel to keep your dog near you in locations where dogs cannot roam freely safely or legally, or to give your dog a place to go when delivery persons or neighbors come to your door. 3) You can use your Vari Kennel for transporting your dog while traveling with you in the back of the car or for transporting him from a parking lot into shows/hotels/motels where a loose dog on a lead would not be appropriate. 4) If the flight is reasonably short, you can use the Petmate Ultra Vari Kennel to transport your pet in the luggage compartment when you travel on an airplane. 5) It would be sadly irresponsible to dump a new dog in a crate and go off and leave him to have a traumatic experience. But if you take the time to crate-train him, some dogs can become so comfortable and relaxed in their kennel that they can stay in a closed crate for an hour or more. Bear in mind that crate-training takes patience, and that many dogs can never be left in closed crates without freaking out. If you decide to crate-train your dog, start out allowing him access to an open kennel, sitting near him and giving him treats to make the kennel a positive experience. Get help from a professional, read up on other people’s methods/experiences, and prepare to take as much time as necessary until the dog is happy and relaxed in their kennel before leaving him alone. Wherever you put your Petmate Ultra Vari Kennel, either in a bedroom for sleeping, or in your car for traveling, make sure that the kennel is out of the sun and your dog has plenty of fresh water. I would never leave a dog outdoors in a kennel or exposed to the sun, rain, or storm. RECOMMENDATIONS: If you use it responsibly, I think the Petmate Ultra Vari Kennel can bring enjoyment to your dog and a better relationship between you both. • A disappointing experience.
This dog kennel has been mostly a disappointment. Up to the point then I finally got it assembled and working, it was a struggle. The first one came in with a hole punched in at the top (see photo). The shipping crate didn’t appear to be injured so I can only assume that it was packed damaged. I decided if I’m gonna spend $100 for that it should be right so I set up the return and ordered a replacement. Holding on to the original until the replacement arrived. The replacement arrived and the door was missing half of its components. Spring and backside. So I kept the bottom and the door to the original unit and the top from the replacement unit and then sent the rest back to Amazon. A lot of hassle. Once I got it together it seems to functions fairly well although the door is still difficult to shut. I think there’s probably a lot better units out there for that kind of money ... show more
