My 12 yr old cat who has always eaten dry food and has never been picky, stopped eating several weeks ago. Have tried all kinds of foods, enhancements and every treat imaginable and also had to start force feeding, which was not exactly successful nor was anything else. She was a feral and had a pretty tough life her 1st few yrs. It took a while but she has come around and loves and trusts me and my son (Anyone else, forget it!) but she is still very cautious about any touching or handling and will not allow herself to be picked up. (absolutely amazing the speed, contortions and lengths she will go to to avoid it) She does love to be brushed, petted (on her terms) and snuggles up w/us all the time but definitely DOES NOT do laps! And even if she's already sitting near you, no matter how calm, normal etc., she is extremely wary and senses if you are about to 'do something' to/with her. She will hiss and growl like crazy and you may get clawed in her effort to get away but thankfully she doesn't really attack; even a bite is always a very gentle warning. She just is determined to get away (or preferably not get caught in the first place) and is incredibly stealthy, fast and wiry even when she's not well. So you can imagine that it is quite a feat to even try to examine her, administer anything including food, let alone try to get her into a carrier and be examined by a vet. Not to mention extremely stressful for her! Several vet visits and all kinds of tests later, we finally have a guarded relief that she doesn't seem to have any serious illness and even her teeth and gums are really good especially for an older girl. However we still don't know what's wrong. Well, it turns out she has a sore in the roof of her mouth, just behind her top front teeth. It is very difficult to see but one vet who was extremely calm, gentle and good with handling her finally found it. So we are assuming that may be what is causing the feeding problem. (though after trying all the soft stuff, I did find she WILL happily munch down her old favorite very hard, crunchy, treats!) She has had a steroid injection and in the following days she did begin to occasionally eat very small portions (like maybe a tablespoon) of certain foods on her own. I've been working hard at it but it is VERY difficult to give her any other medication. None of the vets had any other suggestions of what to do for her mouth. I read about this product and figured it was worth a try. I was initially trying to at least smear it somewhere on (even anywhere near? lol) her mouth thinking that she would at least try to lick it off. Um no; like all the other things I've tried, she will manage to fling it around the room. Same if put on a paw or anywhere else. So I really haven't been able to get much if any in her mouth with any assurance, especially 2x a day. Plus, right now, if I can get anything in her mouth, food has to be the priority. Though the ONE time I did get some of it actually into her by squirting from the tube into the corner of her mouth, it did seem to make her feel a little better. She wasn't at all happy about having something strange put in her mouth but it didn't seem to bother her anywhere near as much as the other things I've tried to give her including food. Yesterday, I decided to see if I could put the Biotene in a tiny 1 ml syringe I had. Since I've had to try to feed, medicate etc. via syringe, I kind of have it down - as best as I can anyway. Well the tip of the Biotene/Oratene fit perfectly into the top of the syringe and I had no trouble at all filling it w/o bubbles etc. So now I waited for an opportunity to try it out. It worked perfectly! It's quick and the syringe is tiny so I was able to actually get it in the side of her mouth without much difficulty at all and even no mess. I may not be able to get it exactly onto upper and lower gums or in this case the roof of her mouth but I have been able to slip it in and give a squirt on each side of her mouth very quickly. So I'm hoping her saliva will help spread it around. I can also gauge the amount I'm putting in much better with the syringe v.s. trying to squeeze it in directly from the tube which was previously the only way I could be even close to successful. She's now had 3 doses via the little syringe and once it's in her, she really doesn't seem to mind it at all. And seems to be freaking out less now that she knows it's not some totally awful thing. I figure if I've managed to do it w/her, it might be helpful for others to try. I didn't get the syringe here but will place a link below. I'm hoping it helps her. If it does, I'll come back and give it 5 stars and maybe use the maintenance formula. I'd love to try the water additive but kinda doubtful about that. She can smell literally a drop of something in her food or water and won't touch it. Best of luck with your pets everyone! :) I didn't buy the 1 ml syringe, that saved the day, on Amazon but I see they are available here. I'm going to order some more. The Biotene seems to be rinsing out it fine but since it's clear not totally sure. They may eventually get sticky? Plus I want to make sure I have them on hand! Love this gel! I bought it a couple of months ago but was afraid to use it consistently on my elderly cat. I just didn't want to stress her out or bog down her kidneys. If you have an elderly pet you understand. She's very independent so any effort to assist her in her daily care is a huge battle. However, I noticed she's been eating tenderly and her breath is RANK, and I was worrying about periodontal disease and about stressing her by taking her to the vet at her age, so I took the dive. I've been giving her this gel consistently, once a day for about a week, and already I can see a difference in how she handles the food in her mouth, and I also notice she eats more frequently and doesn't shy away from food as much. I also noticed she's gaining a bit of weight and is even more energetic. Her rank breath smells less like something rotting, and more like fish now. The fish breath isn't pleasant, but it's a HUGE improvement. I am so happy! I know it's having a good effect from her mouth all the way to her insides. She's petite (about 6lbs and small frame) so I use about 1/3rd dose as what is recommended and she is doing really well with it. I don't know how it tastes, but I know my cat doesn't like it. Fortunately it's applied to the gums just under the lips and not on the tongue, so she doesn't fly into a rage over the flavor immediately. The gel is clear and smells like a dental office, or like a brand new shirt you bought at a department store before you wash it. Also, because of being primarily right handed, I often accidentally apply slightly more on one side of her mouth than the other, and the side with the greater application seems to be developing whiter teeth. It's a slight difference so I'm not sure how accurate this is, but I am PRETTY sure her teeth had been a little darker on that side before using the gel. If you have any struggles brushing your pet's teeth or are concerned about tartar/dental issues, I 100% recommend this product. It should definitely be one of the things you try along the way to help your cat live a better life. Pros -It seems to whiten teeth/remove tartar -the smell isn't unbearable -the tube tip is narrowed so with larger animals I think you could probably insert the tube tip directly under the lip along the gumline to apply. (wouldn't work for smaller animals) -reasonable price -a little goes a long way -doesn't seem to overload the system or kidneys of an elderly cat (assuming the dosage is reduced) Cons -cats don't like the flavor (it might be more the gummy consistency they don't like, hard to tell) -packaging gives one blanket dosage on the back, which I think is geared toward dogs. Have to play around with the dosage for smaller animals and hope it's right. -For small cats, you have to apply the gel with your finger so as not to poke their gums. ... show more

    • Helped my older cats teeth
This stuff is great for cats who don’t like their teeth brushed. I have an 8 year old female cat who won’t let me touch her mouth and this stuff has worked great for us. I use it after feeding times and slowly but surely, it’s getting rid of the plaque on her teeth.

    • Helps tremendously with inflammation
So I've maybe written 2 reviews ever. That means this definitely gets credit. I have a 9 year old pit. She has a growth along her gum line that isn't cancerous. She's had it for a couple years and we don't want to put her through surgery so we just switched her to a wet food to keep the growth from getting scratched up. Fast forward and her breath had gone rancid and her gum line had turned an awful red and I noticed what almost looked like a canker sore forming on the tip of her growth. So I anxiously searched for something like an antibiotic for her mouth. We are about 6 days in and all that redness is GONE. Her gums are totally pink and while I can't say it's doing anything much for the plaque build up, it's still 6 days in and it isn't a toothpaste so..... as an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory this really does work great ... show more
