  • Easy to use, detailed report provided
I read the reviews of several of these types of products and this one had many positive reviews. After buying it and using it, I can see why. The process was simple, the company kept me informed through the whole process, and the results were amazing, very detailed. From what we can tell by the appearance of our dog, the results are also accurate. What we thought were the main breeds in our mixed-breed shelter adopted pet, were pretty much spot on. ... show more

  • Very Interesting! Very Interesting!
I'm 63 years old and have had dogs as pets in the home since I was born. Mostly Heinz 57 mutts that were dumped in the country, and we took them in. We recently had a dog dumped on us, and this is the 1st time I ever really wanted to know what kind of dog we had. This was because of his ice blue eyes, long back legs, and many unique behaviors. We discovered that this dog is a mix of 26 different breeds. Although we can see traits from some of the other breeds, the 7% Treeing Walker Coonhound is what we see the most of. We love this large unique puppy, and now we have some answers for all the people who are constantly asking us questions about his looks and behaviors. Wisdom's website is very user friendly. We have shown the DNA results to a couple of people that were so impressed, they said they were going to buy Wisdom DNA tests for their pets. ... show more

  • Recommended by my vet, easy to use Recommended by my vet, easy to use
We adopted our puppy from a rescue organization that had no idea what breed mix she was. Everyone had their guesses so we decided to buy a doggie DNA test. Our vet recommended this brand and another one for most accurate results. Instructions are incredibly easy and the swab process was quick. Just send the swabs back in their prepackaged mailer. Can’t wait to get our results in a few weeks and see if we were close on breed guesses. I’ll update after we get them back to see if the price is worth the results! Purely based on ease of use, I’d recommend. *Update* we got the results and are thrilled! While they weren’t exactly what we were expecting (surprise!), they make complete sense with her size and looks. I’m confident the results are accurate. It helps us know what type of exercise she likes/needs and how to manage her diet/exercise going forward. I’m so happy we bought this! Still 100% recommend. ... show more

  • Easy to use and register.
Seems easy enough to perform swab. Other than our dog didn’t like the bristle brush in his mouth. Registration online was quick and easy. Everything was provided with step by step instruction. It will be interesting when we get the results back and see how many breeds our dog is. We did a test about 18yrs ago and would have said that dog was none of them from his looks. We’ll see how much progress has happened in that time. Will update this review when we get the results back. ... show more

  • Info regarding details of report sections and process timeline. Very impressed!
(Note: This is worth what you spend on it, truly, but the price goes up and down. We got it at $56 via a flash sale, and the price then went to the 70's. It went back down a few weeks later to the $50's, and now it's up to 80. This is in the space of less than 6 weeks. Keep an eye on the price or use a site that alerts you when the price here drops. No matter what, this is definitely worth it!) Best Christmas gift I've ever given, hands-down. We adopted Rose from a wonderful rescue organization in September 2015. She was supposedly half-Chihuahua and half something else, most likely miniature pinscher. Well... my sweet girl whom my (wonderful) vet said would likely average 9-12 pounds has grown to a svelte 22 pounds. Of course, he didn't know exactly what her parentage was, and neither did we. I got this for my husband for Christmas (Rose is his baby). The timeline was: Mailed 12/24/16, Email from Wisdom Panel showing receipt on 12/28/16, and we received an email saying the results report was ready on 1/12/17, which is 2 weeks and 1 day from receipt. We easily logged back in to the site (you register when you send the sample) and viewed the report. Congratulations! Rose is a Shetland Sheepdog, Miniature Pinscher mix. (OMG!) The report was easily downloaded to a pdf which was 10 pages long, and included the following sections (as of January 13, 2017): (1) Key Breeds Detected – a genealogy chart which shows great grandparents, grandparents, and parents); (2) Key Breed History, Appearance and Behavior (one section for each key breed detected; in our case we had two), which tells you things like height, weight, ear, muzzle and tail characteristics, roots (e.g., the Sheltie has its roots in the Shetland Islands off the coast of Scotland), coat type and colors, markings and traits; (3) Ours had a Mixed Breed Ancestry section, since this was part of Rose's DNA makeup. It included information such as the groups within the mixed breeds (in our case, her mixed-breed ancestry was made up of the Terrier Group, Companion Group, Sporting Group and Hound Group. There's a bar chart showing how much of each group makes up her Mixed Breed ancestry. Each group within this section has information like the type of dogs that make up the group, what they were initially bred for, traits, etc.) (4) MDR1 (Multi-Drug Resistance-1) screening - this DNA test tests for the MDR1 genetic mutation, which can mean a dog is more sensitive to certain drugs. (There’s more information on this on the site.) Ours showed the Rose does not have the mutation, and isn't at increased risk for experiencing side effects from drugs that are pumped by P-glycoprotein.); (5) How Key Physical Traits Are Inherited - shows the influence of breeds on a dog's appearance; (6) Additional Information - includes the following sections: (a) Predicted Adult Weight Profile, (b) Talk to Your Veterinarian (show them the genetic results, esp. if there's an MDR1 issue), (c) How Wisdom Panel Works, and (d) A $15 off coupon to purchase an additional kit for you or friends/family (7) A Statement of Authentication certificate, which includes the names of you and your dog, the date of the test results, a genealogy chart showing great-grandparents through parents, and note certifying the authenticity of your dog's canine genetic background as determined following the analysis of the genetic markers. Again, The PDF can be easily downloaded and printed. I am VERY happy with the price, delivery, ease of gathering the sample (two cheek swabs; very easy and quick), and the timeline until we received the results. I've already ordered another test (we have two dogs) and would highly recommend it to anyone. ... show more

  • Used Embark AND Wisdom with surprisingly similar results Used Embark AND Wisdom with surprisingly similar results
This review will be a comparison between Wisdom 3.0 and Embark. I bought these during the Christmas holiday season, so they were on sale. Wisdom 3.0 was $49, Embark $99, with the intent of only using Wisdom, it was bought first. When we got the Wisdom results, I thought they got our sample mixed up with another dog’s DNA. The test results look NOTHING like our dog that was sampled. So, we bought Embark. Embark took longer, perhaps it was the time of year, or maybe it was just their process. Both tests say they go back 3 generations. Wisdom advertised 350 dog breeds, while Embark says it has fewer breeds but more in depth genetic marker testing. Wisdom results: Siberian Husky 25%, Chow Chow 25%, Boxer 12.5%, American Staffordshire Terrier 12.5%, Border Collie 12.5%, Breed Group (Herding, Asian, Terrier) 12.5%. We thought Wisdom screwed up, so we bought Embark. While we waited for Embark, we began to notice our dog matched some of the Wisdom results. We had our baby only 3 months before we tested her, and she was a rescue, so we truly had no idea what her heritage would be. We looked online and found some breeds we thought she looked like (Carolina Dog, Dingo, Norwegian Buhund, and the animal shelter said she was Sheltie and Shiba Inu) and NONE of these breeds came back as a result. How could that be? Hence, why we thought there was an error on Wisdom’s part. However, while we waited for the Embark results, we began to notice the breeds that were listed in her Wisdom results. She has “snowshoe feet” of a Siberian Husky and she LOVES the snow, the outdoors, and to RUN, RUN, RUN (and she’s quick); every once in a while we can see the Pit Bull Terrier in her face (when she gets a certain look); her paws curl like a Boxer’s and when she jumps up she doesn’t just put 2 paws on you and stay there, she continues to paw at you like a Boxer. Her tail, of course, curls over her back like a Husky and Chow, and she has upright pointy ears like many of the results do, no argument there. I also did some other research on coloring, and discovered Husky’s can be this blonde coloring with white. Embark results finally came back: Siberian Husky 28.9%, Australian Shepherd 20.0%, Chow Chow 15.2%, American Pit Bull Terrier 11.6%, Boxer 9.5%, Border Collie 7.1%, Supermutt (Alaskan-Type Husky, Alaskan Klee Kai) 7.7%. Emabark also gave a Wolfiness score of 0.9%, their site says most dogs are 1% or less. WOW! Imagine our surprise when it came back nearly the same as the Wisdom Panel. I guess Wisdom didn’t actually mess it up. So, what we have learned is, our baby is mostly Siberian and Alaskan type of Husky, Pit Bull type of Terrier, Chow Chow, Boxer, Border Collie, and some Shephard type. The more we live with her, the more we begin to see the results in her. We received the Wisdom results about 2 months ago from this writing, and the Embark results about a week ago. After comparing both results, we are happy we did both. They were both VERY similar, with minor differences. It has been an enjoyment to learn about our baby, her breed's temperament, and what to expect when she is full grown. She is an excellent watch dog (not guard dog), and she is so loving. Embark seem to have more information from their results which is really interesting, including other dogs they tested that are close genetic matches to our dog. We would DEFINITELY do both tests, together, again. ... show more
