JUST THE IMPRESSION Buy it, you'll like it. It cuts fast and smoothly. Get it on sale when you can. Any ARC 5 model will shave about the same as other ARC 5s that share the same head and motor. Buy the cheapest one. BACKGROUND I've been shaving with a Panasonic ES-8243 (ARC4) for the past 16 years. That's right, I bought it in Mar 2010, and it just died this week in May 2026. I definitely got my money's worth out of that one. PURCHASE DECISON and COMPARISONS I considered the ARC3 models at around $100. But I didn't want to potentially slow down my shaving time and that is a step down from the ARC4 I was using. With fewer blades and a smaller head, I felt it would slow the shave and so I ruled that out. I replaced my ARC 4 ES-8243 with this (ARC5) ES-ALV6HR for $149 plus tax, on sale. Other Panasonic models I considered were the ES-LV65-S, and the ES-LV67-K both of which were $179 and not on sale. All 3 of these models are "ARC 5." At the same price point, I'd have chosen the ES-LV65 which has a more sophisticated display that shows 10% increments of battery, and elapsed time on the shave. The ES-LV67 is a bit newer model, but the same blades and motor, a 20% battery increment display with no timer. THIS MODEL ES-ALV6HR also shares the same motor and blades as the other two. It's got a 20% battery increment display. It does not have an elapsed time display while shaving. Everything I could find suggested these three models would shave identically or with imperceptible minor differences. Panasonic claims improvements on the newer models but the motor, speed and head are the same. So I chose the cheapest one. It happens to also be newer. And it's a regional variant. I have no idea what that might mean on future parts availability, but I opted to save the $30 as this one was on sale. I liked the elapsed time display on the ES-LV65, but not enough to pay an additional $30 for it. I also kind of liked the red body on this one, but definitely would not pay extra for a color. I wish they had not eliminated the elapsed time but I think the 20% increments are fine on the battery indicator, and I like that indicator better than the round 10% indicators on the ES-LV65. They seem easier to read, which might be a benefit when I don't have my old man glasses on in the morning. I briefly considered some Braun models, did not consider any rotary blade shavers (had one, hated it). The reputation of the Panasonics is that they shave closer than the Brauns. The Brauns are known on some of the higher end models for being better with longer flatter hairs in the beard, and with heavier, coarser beards and beards that aren't shaven as frequently. My beard is not that dense and I shave almost daily, sometimes even twice. So the Brauns didn't appeal to me as much as the closer shave promised on the Panasonic. In fact, the Panasonic website "help me choose a razor" tool actually recommended the ARC3 as sufficient. But again, I didn't want to slow my shave time. The bigger head and 5 blade head promised speed, and I do value that. Finally, the 16 year lifespan of my prior Panasonic was a heavy factor in my choosing another Panasonic. FIRST SHAVE IMPRESSION I put a full 1 hour charge on the razor, then shaved with it dry. No lotions or creams, and I did not shave yesterday so about 1 extra day of beard. Love it. It was noticibly faster than my 16 year old ES-8243. I charged that every night so couldn't tell you how badly the run time after charging had deteriorated, but I'm sure it was a lot. And I have not yet had a chance to see how long this razor holds a charge. We'll start that experiment tomorrow. My shave was much faster to complete with this razor. I doubt it took me two minutes to complete a shave. It handled the longer flatter hairs on the mid to lower area of my neck that my ARC4 previously struggled with. The bigger head definitely made for a faster shave. And while some say the bigger head requires some getting used to particularly around the under nose area, I had no trouble with it at all. My prior razor was probably 3 to 4 minutes to shave. It required multiple passes, particularly on the neck area mentioned. I'm sure the replaceable cutting blades were degraded but to be honest, I bought a replacement set once and didn't find it made any difference at all in cutting speed. If it lasts as well as my ES-8243 did, I'll be thrilled. It probably won't, at least probably not without a battery replacement. (Panasonic does not recommend replacing the battery because they want to sell you a new razor, but it's possible and not all that difficult.) The batteries are usually good for 5-15 years and I got 16 out of my last one. MY OLD ARC4 ES-8243 I'm going to try to put a new battery in that one and see if it works again. It might be dead from internal moisture though...possible short or circuit board damage or motor failure. But that battery was definitely degraded. I'll know in a week when the new $18 battery arrives. AI says if it won't start at 16 years it's likely the battery, but if it won't start when plugged into the wall, it's likely other damage like the motor or circuit board. However, I don't recall it EVER being able to start when plugged in. So I'm trying a new battery!

I have used Panasonic wet/dry electric razors for over 20 years. They are the only brand I buy. This one did not disappoint. I have owned and used this one almost daily for three months. Really close shave. The shave is also fast because of the size of the shaving surface. The head position isn't fixed and allows the blades to move and pivot with the contours of your face. The head can be locked into position though if you prefer. Charging time is reasonable and a full charge lasts many shaves; over a week. I almost always use this with Creamo shave lotion, which gives me the best shave; however, I will shave dry sometimes if I just want to clean up quickly and the shave is still good. Panasonic shavers last many years so between the shave quality, durability, and price, you cannot go wrong with this razor. My only complaint is that it did not come with a travel case like previous ones have, but I just use an old case when traveling.

I keep trying different shaving methods always hoping to find the perfect one. This may be the best electric option yet. I have tried the then-best from Norelco a few years back. A Braun S9 which is supposed to be the best of the best. A cheaper Norelco, and this one. The high-zoot Norelco just didn't work well for me at all. The more conventional cheaper Norelco is surprisingly good, OK for closeness, great for comfort, and quite fast. The Braun will in fact give me the close shave the reviews say if I go over and over and over and over and OVER my face. This Panasonic shaves as well as the Braun but gives me a smooth shave much faster. The special cleaning speed and the power button lock are very useful, but not obvious. You have to read the manual to find them. There is some minor skin irritation for me. I usually get that with a new razor and I insist on a shave that is closer than I really need, so keep those factors in mind. I got the one without the cleaning stand. The Braun I have has a cleaning stand and I find that it is just irritating. I suspect that with cleaning (the Panasonic has a special cleaning "vibration" mode that is supposed to prevent splashing so much) using hand soap as recommended one really doesn't need a cleaning stand for this razor, so I suggest that if you're on the line trying to decide whether you want that just save your money. Use a brush, hand soap and water, and then oil the blades. Panasonic includes a bottle of oil to let you do that, even. Pretty nice razor! I don't give it five stars because it is still not as quick as a multi-blade wet razor AFTER you get your face all washed and soaped and lathered up. Also not quite as close as a better wet razor. But much more convenient and very nice. Especially nice for travel 'cause you don't have to explain to the TSA that no, that mystery compound in the plastic cylinder is SHAVING SOAP. Sheesh. Those guys.

I have only had this two days, but I am motivated to give this the review it deserves. There is no 6th or 7th stars available, but it should be for this razor. I have never had this close a shave from anything other than a good blade system in my life. Amazing, I did not know an electric could shave like this. Other design features like the floating head, washable head, intuitive interface, great design are just icing on the cake. Highly recommended for now. Longevity is unknown, but others seem to have good results.

This is my second Arc5. It is still a fantastic electric razor. I think it does a better job than my straight razor. I just shaved 3 days of beard growth with just one pass over the stubble, and I grow facial hair quick and thick. I was looking at the newer Arc 7, but reviews basically said the shave is the same and I didn’t really have any complaints before. The replacement blades are a little pricey for name brand Panasonic blades. There are cheap knockoffs. I don’t know about their performance. This is the shaver that works for me. I doubt I will ever change and I recommend it.

I really wanted to love this shaver, but am unfortunately a little disappointed in it. I have a cheap Remington that lasted twelve years, and still works. The charger wires have become frayed, and rather than look for a replacement charger, I decided to look into what new shavers are available. I wish I had just picked up a replacement charger. I read a couple of articles that spoke very highly of this Panasonic shaver, so I put it on my radar. When it dropped $50 as a pre-Black Friday "deal", I decided the price was low enough to take a chance on it. At $150, I was not willing to purchase it. My trusty Remington shaver was about $30 when I purchased it way back when. I will say that I think this shaver is a little better than my 12-year-old Remington, but not by much. The trimmer on this one is noticeably worse, and only works well in one direction. This shaver can not be used while it is plugged in, which is a huge minus in my opinion. Very few brands offer this feature, making the customer need to replace the item when the battery goes bad. Speaking of the battery, this shaver's battery does not last that long. It says it can get 3 weeks of shaves from a full charge. This means shaving every two days, maybe 4 minutes per shave. In my experience, mine would not come close to this. I haven't done a test where I just let the shaver keep running (which wouldn't be a very good test, since it wouldn't involve cutting any facial hair), and I also don't want to run the battery down to zero. However, I have been paying attention to how much the indicator drops when I shave. I think I take about 6-7 minutes to shave with an electric shaver, because I always need to go over portions of my face that don't get cut well. The indicator almost always drops a full segment (20%) each time that I shave. My twelve year old Remington's original battery still gets close to this amount of time all these years later. This Panasonic shaver does shave the closest of any electric shaver that I have used, but it's only a little closer than the Remington. I still have to go over areas of my face multiple times, and sometimes I just can't get it to cut a hair that my Remington never had issues with. It's a pretty comfortable shave most of the time, but the blades have gotten caught on a hair 3 times in my 5 weeks of using it. It's a good shaver, but not a big enough improvement over my cheap Remington to warrant paying so much.

I am older and do not shave often enough and my beard hairs grow out quickly. I really should shave daily but I do not. This razor still gives me a great shave. It is easy to hold and use. I just have to make sure I do not hit the on/off switch while shaving. The thumb rest is not always convenient so I have turned it off by accident. This is a me issue and not the razor so I did not take away a star.

I had a Braun Series 9 shaver for nearly 7 years. Still works, but I could tell its battery was on its deathbed, PLUS it wasn't shaving very close anymore, so I thought I'd treat myself to a new shaver. I was going to just get another Braun 9 something, but I recalled way back I had a Panasonic shaver...middle of the line, but it shaved really close and seemed very well made, so I thought I'd give the Arc 5 a go. Long story short, this Arc 5 DOES shave "extremely close"...it's comfortable..the shave was so close I found I could shave every other day. How,ever what turned me OFF was that it just felt cheap in my hands vs my older Braun. Also, where you put your thumb, I dunno it just did not feel comfortable to me, almost like that spot sticks out too much. I was not a fan of the very bulky shaving head YET I admit it easily could get to any spot, even under my nose, with no issues at all. I think what really turned me off was the HORRIBLE battery life. My Braun would charge way faster and even whlie it's battery was not good anymore, it would last twice as long as this Arc 5. The Arc 5..at least the model I got came in a generic, plain-looking, ugly box that looked like a repack but was NOT. For over $200, Panasonic did not even include a darn 50-cent BRUSH.??? The case is also SO cheap..some vinyl garbage vs the much sturdier case the Brauns come in. Again, though I can NOT take away from the shave quality, it's fantastic. On an overall though, I just felt the shaver was cheap and not something I wanted to keep another 5- 7 years. I ended up returning it. I bought a Braun Series 9 pro + YES overpriced!, but and to ME the quality seems so so much better, the battery may last 4 times longer than this Arc. The case is solid, came with a BRUSH...and I can't wait to use it. Feels solid in the hand, unlike this Arc. That's my take If you JUST look at shaving though and the lower price than a competing Braun,..well, this Panasonic Arc 5 IS a very good shaver..just wasn't for ME.
