My monster desktop was dying. My new replacement came diskless, mostly because there is not even a place for an optical drive in Phanteks P400a drbg case. So I came to Amazon looking for enclosures. After a big of search, and trusting in some of the reviews, I decided to try out OWC without any prior experience. Pro's and Cons listed below Pros - quick, but not next day shipping - great, affordable price - build quality is beyond expectation, this thing is TUFF. Solidly build - hold my LG BD readwriter perfectly (see photos) - very easy install. Plug in the two internal cables. Secure with screw. Screw in rubber feet. Plug in USB an Power. Plug into PC USB port. Done Cons - no free, amazon prime shipping - weight. That solid build quality comes at a cost. Weight. With the LD drive inside, its about 4lbs 10oz. - size, its not small. So dont expect it to be. Its an external enclosure. On a windows 10 PC, you'll need some external software to play DVD/BD. Once you install that, bing, bang, boom. Done! Enjoy your movies This is build so well, I may never need to another. But if anyone asks me, I will surely refer them to OWC. 100% satisfied. Its the real deal. ... show more

Nicely constructed with a metal chassis and aluminum enclosure. The side mounting holes have rubber grommets (vibration/noise reduction?) and perfectly line up with those on the 5.25" optical drive. The two cables (pwr/data) connected to the drive without issue. The bottom mounting holes for the black rubber feet lined up as well. The main reason I went with this product is because it uses an AC power adapter in lieu of USB. The only knock on the product is that the rubber feet should have metal washer inserts so that the rubber doesn't deflect when tightening the mounting bolts. In the realm of computing, the term "Pro" is often overused—but not in this case. Here, we are truly in professional territory. On the OWC website, the manufacturer provides only the essential specifications of this enclosure, without delving into details. Yet, in practice, this case is a small marvel of its kind. We ordered it to build an external DVD player to pair with a Mac Pro, and the high-quality aluminum chassis efficiently dissipated the heat generated by the DVD drive, which I used to upload CDs for my reviews. After transferring ten CDs to the computer, the enclosure remained only moderately warm. The unit arrived well-packaged, complete with all necessary screws and an external power supply. Its design is so clean and well-thought-out that the longest part of the setup was simply screwing everything in place—mounting the DVD drive and connecting the cable took mere seconds. Once assembled and in operation, the enclosure exudes a sense of reliability—and it’s not just an impression. If, like us, you opt for a slightly noisy burner, this case helps tame the sound, turning it into a mere whisper. It’s hard to find a better option on the market today. The VID:PID of the SATA Bridge chipset in this is listed as 0x1e91:0xde2c. Confirmed that it passes SMART with the `-d sat` flag. This makes the enclosure work well for external hard drives as well as ATAPI / optical media. I paired it with an Icy Dock MB971SP-B and use it for offline backup to hard drives. The construction is solid, and you can remove the rear panel if necessary, but it's very solid and well designed. ... show more

I purchased the empty enclosure (no drive) and paired it with an LG WH16NS40 Bluray drive. The enclosure is very well made. The outer shell is aluminum and the inner tray that holds the drive is stamped steel. The LG drive fit perfectly -- took perhaps 5 minutes to assemble. The power supply is rated for a full 3 amps. Many enclosures and docks come with a 2 amp supply, which is usually enough but can be marginal and cause problems with some drives. Kudos to OWC for not taking any chances. I tested with regular 25gb BD-R, 50gb BD-R, 25gb BD-R Mdisc, 8.5gb DVD+R, 4.2gb DVD+, and 700mb CD-R media. All worked perfectly, at full speed (as allowed by particular media), and passed read-back verification with zero errors. That's all a compliment to the LG drive, of course, but also says the Enclosure's USB-to-Sata bridge (an ASMedia ASM1053E) is working well. I am very happy with this enclosure, and would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to host a full-size, full-speed optical drive in an external USB 3.0 enclosure. ... show more

    • Good build quality; Will fit 7.18" Pioneer Blu-Ray Drive with Modification
Size: 5.25 inch Color: Aluminum Enclosure
Purchased this on recommendation of Billy Carlson (billycar11) of makemkv forums for use with a Pioneer BDR-2213 drive which is 7.18" in length (188 mm). (There are anecdotal reports online in various forms as well as in amazon reviews that Vantec enclosures fried drives.) Because the enclosure does not support longer drives by default, brackets were extended using a dremel tungsten carbide bit, so the bracket on the enclosure would align with the screw holes on the drive. (Modification process took around 20 minutes). Drive is securely held in place, and works as intended. The only compromise is that the plastic drive bezel sticks out (about 1 mm from enclosure) instead of staying flush. This is an acceptable trade off for me, given that I don't have any internal drive bays in my computer case, and didn't want to risk frying my drive with Vantec. I am knocking off a star because of its short length and premium cost. (I would have taken off 1.5 stars if I could but Amazon does not have .5 star increments, and a 3 star rating would be too harsh for otherwise good product). This product does not support full length bluray drives which are fairly common, unlike Vantec. Even if OWC did not want to increase the length of the enclosure because of cost considerations, they could have extended the hole on the mounting bracket so I wouldn't have to modify it, and thrown in a plastic bezel to make the drive flush. When you consider the 20% premium over Vantec as of this review ($10 price difference), it's hard to justify the premium pricing. If the thought of paying $60 seems outrageous, and you use the drive on an ad-hoc basis, consider buying a Sata to USB 3 adapter instead, such as one from Benfei, see B07JGT17B8, which has excellent reviews.
