  • Outstanding Enclosure for Bluray!
Size: 5.25 inch Color: Aluminum Enclosure
I purchased the empty enclosure (no drive) and paired it with an LG WH16NS40 Bluray drive. The enclosure is very well made. The outer shell is aluminum and the inner tray that holds the drive is stamped steel. The LG drive fit perfectly -- took perhaps 5 minutes to assemble. The power supply is rated for a full 3 amps. Many enclosures and docks come with a 2 amp supply, which is usually enough but can be marginal and cause problems with some drives. Kudos to OWC for not taking any chances. I tested with regular 25gb BD-R, 50gb BD-R, 25gb BD-R Mdisc, 8.5gb DVD+R, 4.2gb DVD+, and 700mb CD-R media. All worked perfectly, at full speed (as allowed by particular media), and passed read-back verification with zero errors. That's all a compliment to the LG drive, of course, but also says the Enclosure's USB-to-Sata bridge (an ASMedia ASM1053E) is working well. I am very happy with this enclosure, and would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to host a full-size, full-speed optical drive in an external USB 3.0 enclosure. ... show more

  • Another great product from OWC
Size: 5.25 inch Color: Aluminum Enclosure
The VID:PID of the SATA Bridge chipset in this is listed as 0x1e91:0xde2c. Confirmed that it passes SMART with the `-d sat` flag. This makes the enclosure work well for external hard drives as well as ATAPI / optical media. I paired it with an Icy Dock MB971SP-B and use it for offline backup to hard drives. The construction is solid, and you can remove the rear panel if necessary, but it's very solid and well designed. ... show more

  • The unit has worked well for me so far.
Size: 5.25 inch Color: Aluminum Enclosure
OWC Mercury Pro - USB to SATA Optical Drive Housing. The first thing I noticed is that the housing is heavy duty aluminum and the face plate framing the drive in the front is 15mm thick, over all a well built case. Very easy to assemble, just slide the drive through the front and carefully plug in the two cables. Slide the drive in to line up the screw holes. Then thread four screws into each side of the drive. Make sure the front of the drive is lined up with the front of the case and then tighten the screws on each side. Make sure the cables to the drive are inside the case, then slide the unit into the aluminum housing. Put screws through the rubber feet and then screw them through the housing the drive assembly and that's it. Plug in the cables to the back and connect to the computer and power. Activate the power switch on the back of the unit and your ready to use the drive. The computer will recognize the drive. The unit has worked well for me so far and I have used and burned a number of disks so far. The only draw back that I have found is the USB cable is only two feet long, so you may need a 1 to 2 foot extension for the USB cable and that's one thing they need to change. ... show more

  • Its Great! when things just work. Meet UWC. Your optical external drive enclosure best friend. Its Great! when things just work. Meet UWC. Your optical external drive enclosure best friend.

My monster desktop was dying. My new replacement came diskless, mostly because there is not even a place for an optical drive in Phanteks P400a drbg case. So I came to Amazon looking for enclosures. After a big of search, and trusting in some of the reviews, I decided to try out OWC without any prior experience. Pro's and Cons listed below Pros - quick, but not next day shipping - great, affordable price - build quality is beyond expectation, this thing is TUFF. Solidly build - hold my LG BD readwriter perfectly (see photos) - very easy install. Plug in the two internal cables. Secure with screw. Screw in rubber feet. Plug in USB an Power. Plug into PC USB port. Done Cons - no free, amazon prime shipping - weight. That solid build quality comes at a cost. Weight. With the LD drive inside, its about 4lbs 10oz. - size, its not small. So dont expect it to be. Its an external enclosure. On a windows 10 PC, you'll need some external software to play DVD/BD. Once you install that, bing, bang, boom. Done! Enjoy your movies This is build so well, I may never need to another. But if anyone asks me, I will surely refer them to OWC. 100% satisfied. Its the real deal. ... show more

  • Amazing construction. I had some issues with connectivity on Ubuntu (Read for details) Amazing construction. I had some issues with connectivity on Ubuntu (Read for details)

Reviewing the bay only enclosure (no drive). I recently retired my old desktop tower which had internal bays for optical drives, and I wanted to be able to use with either my Linux server (which lives in a rack), or my Windows/Mac laptop on my desk. Since I already had an optical drive (LG WH16NS40 flashed to BD-RE WH16NS60 1.02 for those who care) I bought this enclosure on recommendation and it's *almost* flawless. Looking at the pictures though, I think the version of this that does include the drive, may coincidentally be the drive I already own. The construction and design is beautiful. Robust and the number of screws provided is verging on insane. If we ever have an earthquake, this drive will survive. Connecting it up was simple. One connection. Drive slots into the enclosure. It comes provided with power and a USB 3.0 cable. The USB cable is fine, it could be longer but it's nice that it was included. Plugging it in to the Linux server it was immediately recognized and read a Blu-ray quickly. Great. Here's where the "almost" comes in. It wouldn't read a DVD. The DVD was fine, I have other drives that read it on the same system. I initially thought I'd screwed up an update, or the laser had died (different color lasers are used for different types of disk, so it's possible the Blu-ray would work but DVD wouldn't and vice-versa). I tried a variety of different discs that I knew to be good and some of them would work, but most of them wouldn't. I was about to order another drive when I remembered I was going to eventually house this on my desk. Plugged it into the Windows 11 machine and... DVD read. Flawlessly. Every single time. Going back to the Ubuntu box, dmesg logs show it was timing out talking to the USB, so I suspect there's an issue either with the controller on the system or on the enclosure. It may also be the firmware on the drive. I don't know. Computers are weird. Just know your mileage may vary. Either way it's been a workhorse on my Windows PC and I'm happy with it (Mac works fine too). Oh, and moving it around from place to place to do all this testing was super easy too, so points for portability. ... show more
