Great product at a good price. I have yet to figure out how to properly clean spills on the element. Be sure that if you get grease on it you clean it as well as possible. I failed to do this after some dripped down from a pan, and on my next use, I got a fire flare. Totally my fault.

I bought four of these to replace the flat-top stove in my new apartment. I wanted something durable and easy to keep clean. (I know, I know, everyone likes flat-top stoves, but every drip or splatter shows up on the mirrored surface, then it gets baked onto the hot glass, and you have to scrub it with baking soda for half an hour the next morning to get it clean again! Not for me.) I use these hotplates every day like a normal stove. If my pots scratch the coils a little, I don't care. If my pot is wet underneath and it sizzles on the hot coil, I don't care. If some butter splashes onto the next hotplate, I just wipe it up with a damp paper towel. No more scrubbing, and no more baking soda! And you can see from the pictures how clean they are after a month of daily use -- almost perfect. If some food boils over and gets underneath the coils, that's kind of a hassle to clean up, because the coils don't lift up. You just have to do your best with a paper towel and your fingers. So try not to spill under there! You can see in the pictures I'm boiling a huge pot of soup, so yes, it's possible. But these hotplates are only 1,000 watts, so it takes a while. Boiling 2 cups of water takes about 6 minutes -- twice as long as on a stove. And boiling 4 quarts of water takes about 45 minutes with the lid on, but I can get that down to 15 minutes, if I boil a little water on each of my 4 burners. Soup is the only annoying thing to cook on these hotplates. You can pre-heat these coils while you're chopping vegetables, but they heat up pretty quickly so you don't really need to. They also cool down pretty quickly (which is better than my flat-top stove), and the controls are in the front (also better than my flat-top!). So I definitely recommend these, just keep in mind 1,000 W hotplates take twice as long to boil water as a full stove, so be patient. And the coils aren't removeable, so try not to spill food under there! And to save you some time fiddling: "medium heat" is level 3, "medium-low" is level 2, and "medium-high" is level 4. Level 5 is just for boiling water. ... show more
