I have two of these. They both have worked really well. The reason for only 4 stars is that the thermostat setting is not consistent between the 2 devices. So, I used a thermometer to mark approximate heat setting on the thermostat knob of each device separately.

I've been through other coil portable electric stove tops, infrared-- or whatever it's called--(that use a lot of electricity1200 watts or more and do not heat faster. The one I have but don't use actually takes much longer to heat the same 5 qrt pit of soup.), and the iron top ones (these are great when they work, but lack the finesse of heat regulation, and take longer to cool off). This 1k watt stove works perfectly. It heats up large 5 quart pots and you have to lower the temp to a 2 or so to keep a good simmer going. This is the first one I've owned that has that finesse in heat regulation. It's easy to store, and I prefer the stainless steel appearance. My only complaint is that it is a pain to clean. The coil is not moveable, so getting under it to clean overspills is a major pain. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. This gets pretty hot and comes in handy when there is a small pot/pan I can't use on my induction stovetop. Great to have around to make fresh percolated coffee which is what I use it for every day. Stores away easy and lightweight! Great value for the $, however, I have only used this for a few weeks so I can't speak to its longevity. ... show more

Don't buy - better off finding working hotplate at garage sale or Goodwill. We're again protected to a point of unusablity. Unit turns off when it gets hot won't effectively even boil water. It is an example of America today; best case scenario it will simmer.
