  • Heavy. Solid. Effective.
Size: 2000 Pounds
(Reviewing the 2000-lb model.) When the floor legs are collapsed, this thing takes up under 2sqft of floor space--of course, it's still 5' high at that size, but the point is you can store the crane in a broom closet. That's a neat trick. The crane is heavy: sturdy, solid. The cylinder itself is rudimentary but had zero trouble hoisting my 500lb cast-iron machines around. When deployed the legs splay out fairly wide--a width that is not adjustable--and as another review mentioned the front wheels are not on general-direction casters. That makes the front-end stable, and thus the machine feels confident when lifting--but it does mean you may struggle to get the crane exactly where you want it. I've seen reviews talking about packaging problems. No issues here: this thing came packed up like a tank, on its own pallet and wrapped and strapped with every protective measure I could imagine. It came pre-assembled and ready for use, which meant I had to muscle it around to reach my shop; if I had been smarter (and the weather had been warmer), I might have wanted to disassemble it in order to move it into place more easily. But I certainly can't complain about having received it in a well-protected, ready-to-go configuration. In all I believe this was an excellent choice. The smaller model might have sufficed for my needs, but I'm pretty confident I won't out-grow this larger model any time soon. ... show more

  • One ton is a good value if you can get it on sale
Size: 2000 Pounds
First, I'm not using this crane to lift engines. I got it to lift heavy objects like a couple hundred pound small milling machine. I have no idea how well it would work on a truck engine clearance wise. Should work fine on a car, or a small soccer Mom SUV. I got this primarily for the folded size. I had it narrowed down to this, one from Discount Ramps called a Black Widow, and one from Northern Tool. This was about twice the cost of the local place that imports Freight using a Harbor, but much more compact when stored. The Northern version was cheaper at the time, but not as small. The Discount Ramps was two and a half times the cost of this at time. The OTC won out. It lifts stuff well. Nice smooth lowering action. Easy to control. I do wish it had swivel casters in the front. You need to plan on how you are moving a load. It does have a high center of gravity when folded. You need to be careful moving it folded. For me I found that tipping it back a little and resting the main shaft on my shoulder lets me feel safe moving it around folded. I do wish it also had some extra support around the end of the arm where the smaller tube goes in. I also wish it had something to distribute the force more evenly over the entire arm. I feel like if you try to lift an entire ton with this it would buckle where the ram meets the arm. The one star off is because of the instability and these other concerns.. Hope this helps someone. ... show more

  • Solid Hoist
Size: 4000 Pounds
Its a good hoist but the hydraulic ram on mine did not last very long and had a cheap rubber oil fill plug.

  • Sweet lift
Size: 2000 Pounds
Replaced my crappy old engine hoist with this sweet lift and I am so happy I did. This lift takes up so much less space and is WAY easier to prepare for use than the traditional hoists with slide out legs and drop pin lift arms. Just pop out the pins, drop the legs, and replace the pins and you are ready for action. And as an added bonus, the lift came fully assembled! I was amazed. It is an excellent lift! ... show more

  • Damned fine crane..
Size: 4000 Pounds
Assembly was simple and straightforward. The instructions were complete and clear. The fit and finish were as expected. Operation is smooth and predictable. I used this shop crane to assist in the assembly of a BendPak HDS-14X four post lift. It handled the task with ease.

  • Terrible quality control
Size: 4000 Pounds
The crane was completely unusable as received. The build quality is so poor that it could not be assembled. The tension stays that should bolt to the mast and the base could not be mounted because the bolt holes didn't line up. On one side they were off by almost 3/4 inch (greater than the hole diameter). On the other side, they were off by about half a diameter. Also, the fasteners shipped with the crane did not match the parts list in the instructions. In several places, 12 mm bolts had been substituted for 14 mm. The mating holes were slightly over 14 mm. Besides the bolts themselves being weaker, the undersize bolts greatly increase the bearing stress on the mating parts when the bolts are loaded in shear, as they are here. This is the second (and last) time I have received an OTC product that could not be used. The first was a puller that had a pressure screw with a different thread size than the flange with which it was supposed to mate. It seemed to take a major corporate decision (and several weeks) for OTC to own up to this obvious quality problem and send me the correct flange. No more OTC products of any kind for me. ... show more

  • Small in comparison.
Size: 4000 Pounds
I love how small and compact it is. I purchased it to be easy to store the 365 days a year that I'm not using it. The bigger ones you have to Jack up your car just to slide underneath the car.
