  • Minimal effort for the best result

NO longer have to use axe, I would give it 6 stars if I could!

  • Pretty good, but could use a small tweak
Size: 10"(Φ) x 14.5" (H)
So first of all - bolt the darned thing down to a stable base. You're going to be doing some violence to it and you don't need stuff flying off in random directions. Once that was done and I'd split a few logs I decided that there was one design tweak that was really needed. The blade supports are two round posts at each end of the splitting blade. You can't drive the supports up through the log, they're not sharp. As designed, the log support places the back edge of the log directly over one of the supports. So you wind up having to lean the log back a bit to avoid this creating an off-axis force. It would be better if the support was bent forward about 1" so it keeps the log over the blade instead of the support. I found the little sledge hammer wildly inadequate, but I was splitting some really hard wood that was just barely small enough to go into this. I switched to the full-sized hammer. It works well though, and it's a lot easier and safer to apply a full power overhead sledge hit to the end of a log than if you have to use a wedge or a maul. After splitting a few logs I decided a few things: 1) Splitting logs is hard work. 2) Go get a hydraulic splitter if you're going to be doing this a lot. Or have a kid do it. 3) If 1 or 2 fail, this tool is better than doing it the old-fashioned way ... show more

  • Generous Capacity for Kindling
Size: 12"(Φ) x17" (H)
Product Reviewed: Optimech 12” Dia Kindling Splitter for Wood, XL Log Splitter Cast Steel Firewood Cracker with 5LB Sledge Hammer Heavy Duty Wedge, Manual Splitting Tool for Home (XL) for $110 TL;DR; Good for easy splitting wood; fabricated welded construction; Convenient Sledge; not for hard to split woods such as elm. We heat with wood and I use these things for kindling. This is the second one of these I own. I use them for splitting kindling which we go through a lot of. First off this would be OK for small firewood and easy to split species. If you are splitting elm or something full of knots then learn how to use an ax. I would never use this for our main firewood supply. For small or thin pieces of wood that need fine control of dimensions this is perfect i.e. kindling. I generally split pine and other slab wood on these devices including material up to 8” in DIA if it is clear wood. The 12” dimension is important for slab wood since although it is thin it is usually quite wide. I like my kindling to be around 3/4-1” in minimum dimension and these devices make that easy to achieve. This particular model besides being of generous dimension is welded fabricated construction. To me that means if it breaks it is easy to repair. It is quite springy though so I definitely recommend bolting it down to a splitting log to give it some mass. The one issue I have with this design is that the wedge action is done from several small fingers and fine wood like kindling tends to get wedged between the fingers. I’d prefer a full wedge. The sledge is pretty interesting it looks like a cost savings exercise of using a raw forging instead of a finished head as the faces are not ground which is typical. This has zero impact on the functionality but limits the use of the sledge. 4.5 stars. How I review: Reviews start with 5 stars and I subtract points. - 0 for value but I try to provide guidance -0.5 to -3 for product not matching description e.g. stainless steel is actually plated steel -0.5 to -3 for product missing badly on execution I select products carefully so low (1-3 scores) are rare but detailed comments and critiques almost always are in the review. Most of my reviews come out 4-5 range. If possible I dismantle or destroy items to examine inner workings. ... show more

  • Good for making kindling…not so much for splitting logs
Size: 12"(Φ) x17" (H)
This item’s description labels it as a “Kindling Splitter for Wood, XL Log Splitter…” It’s definitely great if you are trying to split some wood into kindling for the fireplace; however, this is more of a “light duty” tool and is NOT suitable for splitting larger logs into smaller ones, as it's advertised for...that was more than enough for me to deduct one star. Also, from my experience, I would advise against using it on crooked wood or wood that is full of knots, even for kindling. For better stability, I ended up attaching the bottom of this tool to a stump. It is definitely safer and more convenient for making kindling than simply using an axe…however, if you are looking for a tool to split larger-sized logs into smaller ones, you’re going to need something that is more robust than this. ... show more

  • Works well for making kindling.
Size: 10"(Φ) x 14.5" (H)
I got this to use to make kindling for my fire pit. It works great for this! The cast hammer is a bit rough, but works well. I also used it with the back of a big maul, and it works even better. I really like that it has holes drilled into the bottom for mounting. I mounted mine on a big log base to minimize bending down. I really like this! ... show more

  • works for me
Size: 12"(Φ) x17" (H)
I have a tree lined property and they are quite old trees. Limbs are always falling out during a storm. I recently got a fire pit for my new patio so starting to save wood to use. This splitter is coming in handy to get the limbs ready for burning. Star Rating System (What do my star ratings mean?): 1 STAR - Completely unusable, would request a refund 2 STAR - Meets minimum viable product requirements, wouldn't purchase it again 3 STAR - It does what it should, but in a non-spectacular way, I may recommend it, but definitely with reservations 4 STAR - I like it. It is solid quality and delivers as advertised, I would purchase it again and recommend it to a friend 5 STAR - I love it. It meets or exceeds all of my expectations and is high quality, I would purchase it again and would openly promote it to friends As an Amazon Vine Member, I give honest reviews, whether or not it is a good one or a bad one. I'm a person who immediately checks reviews on everything, and I understand how important an honest and thoughtful review is. ... show more
