  • A versatile disc player for critical music listening
I debated a long time between the 203 and the 205 models. From a video perspective they are exactly the same...very good. The 203 is not a bad performer for music, but the 205 takes music output up several notches. It's truly an audiophile caliber machine. It's like where do I start. Dual power supplies for the lowest noise floor, dedicated stereo analog inputs, upgraded DACs at the analog stage, a dedicated HDMI audio input, and also an asynchronus USB input supporting Hi Res music files from your computer....none of these feature are present in the 203. Is there a night and day difference in sound quality from the 203? No, but there is a difference. Bottomline, if you have a good set of speakers and you want the closest reproduction to what the sound engineers and producers intended, the 205 should be on your list to demo. If you have floorstanding speakers that cost $500 for the pair...there's nothing wrong with your speakers, but this is not the unit for you. I have a pair of B&W 804 speakers. Old, but above average performers. Listening to this machine in 2 channel or multi-channel SACD is the best I've heard these speakers sound. Con...no streaming to Netflix, etc. built in. To be honest...I think that's a bigger negative for the 203. ... show more

  • Reference Caliber Worthy of The Highest Praises From Both Audiophiles & Videophiles
For years I've wanted to get a hold of one of Oppo's flagships. I'm glad I was patient enough to wait for the 4k capable UDP-205. As a long time, veteran audiophile who actually has owned, professionally sold, and auditioned many of the most prestigious names in audio (Krell, Martin Logan, Audio Research, VTL, Wadia Digital, Wilson Audio, Paradigm, B&W, etc...) I am so blown away by the sheer construction, attention to detail, and pure bliss Oppo has managed to somehow cram into a $1300 digital player. This unit is built with a rock solid chassis and a toroidal power transformer you won't even find in many, so-called mid-range home theater receivers or amplifiers. With a host of outputs and inputs, there is no feat this machine can't handle. In fact, with the wide array of INPUTS it has, the reference level Oppo machine acts as a first rate, top-of-the-line DAC for a multitude of digital audio sources such as other CD transports (like my classic Krell MD-10) or a USB drive loaded with music. I used the HDMI input to strap my Playstation 4 but it also works very nicely with the Apple TV. Apart from the brand new reference SABRE DACs this employs, it also carries the coveted Balanced XLR outputs for a pure 2 channel audio signal to your preamp or integrated amp. In my case, My Oppo 205 is sent XLR out (I used the Better Cables brand Blue Truth II found here on Amazon, another fantastic bargain for audiophile grade products) to the Cambridge Audio Azur 840a V2. It is a beautiful combo that delivers some stunning performance to a pair of Joseph Audio RM 7si monitors via some JPS Audio Super Conductor 2 speaker cables. I have zero regrets except that my Krell 64x DAC (formerly paired with my MD10 transport) will likely find retirement given the stellar performance of the Oppo UDP-205. So far as video performance, I would laud the same praise upon it as I have for it's superb audiophile characteristics. Oppo truly has the midas touch but produces on a total value budget. If you are looking for an elite CD player for your high end system, or an elite Blu-Ray/4K player, you CAN actually have both in a single unit for a very reasonable price. Excellent and HEAVILY recommended ... show more

  • Best BANG for the Buck!! Best BANG for the Buck!!
I am late in writing my review as I have had my player now for some time. I was fortunate enough to buy my player before Oppo announced that they were going out of business and the price of my player went from $1,300 all the way up to $3.000. I have owned may high-end players over the years Linn, Wadia, Ayre, Etc and I must say that even at the $3k price this player will compete with many $5k players out there. I run mine through the Balanced outputs and running a Coffee HDMI cable from AQ. But I also use it as a "stand-alone" player for my CD's and find it quite impressive. As a Blu-Ray player I also find it equally impressive, not only in the soundtrack of movies but the picture quality. Even on the standard Blu-Ray movies that it up converts to 4K the picture is most impressive and I am just running a mid-range Sony LED. I am sure that when I get ready to but a new OLED from Sonly that it will look even that much more impressive. The only thing is I have not done any research in to what is going to happen to the company should I even need warranty work. I have a feeling with the Toroidal Power Supply that it has along the the quality Sabre DAC's and the other components that it will not need any work for some time if at all!! ... show more

  • This unit is great because I live in an apartment and use headphones ...
I've used OPPO hi-fi gear since the company started. This unit is great because I live in an apartment and use headphones (of course, I use Oppo PM-1 Planar Magnetic headphones), so the headphone jack is a real plus (no jack on my Oppo BDP-95 that I use for my main hi-fi system with surround sound speakers). This unit, with the Oppo headphones and a computer monitor, I have a complete super-hi quality stereo-video system in my office that doesn't bother anyone late at night when I use it. With the best DA chips available, there is no way you can improve on the sound quality even if you spend 10 times as much on the expensive stuff. In addition, all of the other components (power supply, etc.) are top notch. Spending any more money on a multi-disc player than the OPPO UDP-205 is necessarily a waste of money unless you want an expensive hi-end brand name in your system (even the build quality would be no better). ... show more

  • Yes, you can tell the difference
I bought this on a whim when I was frustrated one morning with my Sony all disc player. I thought maybe it's not really playing my SACD. I bought a used model for less than the new price. Initially I had problems with the used model but it turned out to be an electrical issue. My take-if you have 4000.00 speakers then this is well worth the price. CD's sound incredible, I swear I can hear the tape rolling. I now happily hunt for used CD's at thriftstores and have begun buying SACD again. It is pricey but hey it's worth what they charge for this now. Wished I bought it at the original release price of 1200.00 ... show more
