    • A Great Outdoor Activity; It Works!
To my complete shock, the OMMO Metal Detector actually works, and works well for a child's toy. Today's children often need a push to get them outdoors, and this metal detector can be such a tool. Two 9-volt batteries are included, and in my case, both still had high charge. Each battery does last a decent amount of time in the detector, but we opted to move to rechargeable 9-volts as we do with most of our child's toys as batteries can be quite expensive over time, especially the more uncommon varieties such as 9-volts. Assembly was easy and only required the base be attached to the main support via included thumb screws. Instructions are included with clear graphics that indicate how to use the detector and how to angle the main sensor vs. the ground as well as an understanding of the LCD panel and it's readout. The display is easy to read and has a backlight which can be toggled, though is a bit cluttered with redundant images of the dog with a basketball as well as a bar graph that represents the same information. I suppose the inclusion of the dog is supposed to appeal to children, but honestly is a bit distracting vs. the bar graph. Initial tests at home showed that the detector actually does work, and is pretty sensitive as it triggered a high signal for nails within our floorboards as well as coins hidden under blankets from several inches away. Detection under dirt seems to work well down a few inches with weaker signals still being enough to help identify "buried treasure" (or nails the roofers always seem to scatter through one's yard). I would like to test on sand at the beach once the weather turns (it's a bit difficult in the winter) and the IP68 waterproofing takes a bit of the stress away from toys near the water. It's also fun purposely burying some "treasure" and tasking a child to go find it. Overall, this metal detector works better than I personally expected, and is an excellent toy for a curious child and an excellent activity outdoors if one keeps in mind that it IS a toy, but it is a FUNCTIONAL toy! ... show more

Simplicity = High Utility = High Value = High Overall = 5.0 at $50 or less. This metal detector is as simple as it gets. Put in the included 9 volt battery with a nicely made quick-release cover. Attach the hand and control unit to the scanning pad with one hand nut and you are ready for fun. Press the power button for 3 seconds and it turns on. Same to turn it off. The second button is to turn on the back light if you are out in the dark. No instructions are required, and they basically say the above in about 60 words. The manual is essentially a paragraph in many languages. Utility is high. This is pure entertainment for everyone. Endless entertainment. Admit it - you always wanted a metal detector since the age of 2. This is your chance, even if you are old enough to have a credit card. Designed for a kid, which means you can actually understand it. It’s a device that you and your kids will compete for its use. Simplicity is the key this units utility. Unlike Adult metal detectors, this simply beeps when it finds metal. Any kind of metal. Of course your kids can play with it in a search for gold, but this is what you can do with it: • Find studs in the wall. • Locate your missing keys in the grass. • Find that lost screw on the carpet. • Confirm if your fantasy is correct - are you a human or a secret robot. • Scan your so-called buddies for weapons. • Locate enough change to buy something totally useless.
