This is a feature and not a defect, esp if you live with any cats. You must unlock it to use it. Be careful not to put anything like cutting boards over the buttons while it is on, or it may turn off and take a long time to boil water for pasta. I don’t like leaving negative reviews, but I have to be honest here. This cooktop is advertised as 36 inches, but it’s barely 35 inches wide. It did not fit the 36-inch cutout in my countertop, which was incredibly frustrating. I had to return it, and the process was a huge hassle. We bought this to replace an older, broken unit, measured and thought we were good, but the depth is a little less than the previous stovetop, so we had about a 1" gap where the granite didn't support the new unit. We had to go out and buy supplies and then build a support. Measure your old unit carefully before committing. These range tops are great. Perfect fit, form and function. We installed them in custom kitchen island with a custom downdraft extractor between them. We love the totally flat surface for easy cleaning and the touch controls. They also have a lock feature which is great so they won't turn on while cleaning them or when you put something on top of them.
