  • NorTrac PTO Chipper - 5 1/2in. Capacity
This chipper is a rock-solid machine that does what it's supposed to do, at what i believe is the best price for a machine in its class. I own an older DR Mower with a snowblower attachment and was at first attracted to their 4.5" PTO-driven chipper because I like the quality of their products. I was able to see a smaller self-powered (i.e. non-PTO) version of the DR chipper at a local "farm & barn" store, & so have some idea of its quality. This Nortrac machine is AT LEAST as solidly built, and of as heavy a variety of steel plate, ad the DR. And not only is it about $500 less than the DR PTO machine, but it takes limbs of up to 5.5" instead of the DR's 4.5" max. It is much heavier, with a larger and heavier flywheel, than the DR, and so is a significantly more capable chipper. I have now used the NorTrac for a few hours on a variety of tree species, mostly box elder, with an older John Deere 790 tractor (30 hp diesel, 26 at the PTO), and this chipper does not disappoint. It churns through limbs up to the advertised 5.5" and spews the chips in a nice stream into the trailer I park under the exit chute. The gravity feed hopper works surprisingly well as long as the trunks and branches you feed it are reasonably straight. Because my box elders are not especially straight, with many right-angle kinks and branches growing out at odd angles, I have to do a fair bit of lopping, pruning and cutting the branches into shorter sections in order to get them to feed smoothly. Also, smaller branches (below about 1/2 or 3/4" diameter) don't feed well. I either throw these on my brush pile for periodic burning or run them through my old Pioneer 3" chipper-shredder. I will say that my tractor is a bit under-powered for the machine, and labors a bit on the biggest limbs, but that is hardly the fault of the chipper, and I mention it primarily to let potential buyers know that a bit more power than my 790 delivers would be a good thing if you want to chip larger diameter limbs at full speed. ... show more

  • Works great, but heavy use requires upkeep
We are thinning our 10 acre woodlot to improve forest health, and purchased this chipper to avoid creating large slash piles which need to be burned. The chipper arrived well packaged, but was missing many bolts for assembly of hopper. Customer service rep said parts packages were on back order, but couldn't provide a promise date. Brand new parts kit arrived a week later, but it was also missing some parts! By combining the first and second parts kits we assembled the chipper. The chipper tore through a huge pile of 1-3 inch rock maple and red oak, but then slowed down. Found a large nick in the knife, so i flipped it over and used the other side (also ordered spare knife). Cuts through pine and fir like butter, but we mainly chip hemlock branches and the branching patterns sometimes require a lot of pushing given the hopper design. Update: The original knife and replacement kit both developed deep knicks and hairline cracks as mentioned above. Northern Tool released a newer version of the knife kit in 2016 which has held up much longer, and is less expensive. New knife design seems to cut small twigs better. Recommend having a second sharp knife available if you chip a lot of branches like we do. Once the knife gets dull it is worth the time to flip it or change it out to avoid the danger of pushing branches into the hopper. I've decided to just grease the fittings at every knife change since my tractor mainly lives down in the wood lot. Update: The angular bracket that holds the main body of the chipper to the three point attachment broke right at the bend while driving around our woodlot. My local welder and I agree this part is not the best design. Cost me a couple hundred bucks to get it fixed. Otherwise, we continue to get a lot of use from the chipper three years down the road. Some of the grease points are hard to reach (like the front main bearing, front drive shaft bearing). The knives need to be sharpened with special equipment. Here in Maine it runs $15 for the two-sided knife. Update: Chipper is still running great in 2020 but requires regular maintenance as mentioned above. Keeping the knife surfaces sharp is extremely important and now costs $20 locally. Parts are outrageously expensive from Northern Tools. They quoted 160 for a replacement drive belt but I found it for 100 locally (P/N 4/3VX560). ... show more

  • Great Chipper
I did quite a bit of research and comparison shopping before ordering the Nortrac PTO Chipper. The item was shipped promptly by Northern Tools and although I could not be home to unload it, the delivery guy did the unload and placed it in the garage at my wife's request. The chipper was well packaged on a skid and the minimal amount of assembly required took about 45 minutes. The only problem that I encountered was that the PTO drive shaft would NOT FIT over my tractor's PTO ( I have a John Deere 4310 ). I called Northern Tools and after convincing them that it wasn't because I was too stupid to attach it they shipped me a new PTO drive shaft which fit perfectly. I have been able to use it with no difficulty since. The chipping performance is as expected. It will self feed for the most part if the chipping material is fairly straight without a lot of side branches or twigs, but it does need some encouragement if there are a lot of branches, twigs and leaves attached. It will not perform as well as some of the larger units I have used with hydraulic feed, but it costs thousands less and gets the job done. Overall, I rate the unit very highly, and other than the initial difficulty with the drive shaft it has met all of my expectations. ... show more

Getting a big chipper for a small farm is a pain in the ---. However, this chipper came in at an affordable price and running off our small John Deer 1025R it does a wonderful job. Now we can work on down trees as we want to.. I recommend the purchase of this machine for anyone who wants to maintain their land and keep the brush piles in check. It is not for a commercial tree removal company, but for home farm use , small land clearing, it gets 4 stars... ... show more
