04/24/2023: UPDATE! Just received my 2nd light and it works perfectly. I am so happy! I included a photo of my phone light vs the aquarium light to show how bright it is. Its perfect for my planted guppy tank. It’s small/compact, but bright/powerful and can lay directly on the tank lid or it can be clipped on the side/back. The clip is a little snug around the black plastic trim rim of my 10 gallon tank. I would say that for me this was definitely worth the price and very affordable in comparison to some bigger name brands. Also very fast delivery! This 2nd light is a 5/5, but I’m still giving a 4/5 just because my 1st light didn’t work and I have to return it. 04/22/2023: I’m sad to say that straight out of the box, it didn’t work at all. It’s like it’s getting no power at all. I tried holding the buttons down like the instructions say, that did not work. I pushed all the buttons, nothing. I will be sending this back and purchasing a second one. My sister has this same light on her 30 gallon planted aquarium and it has worked extremely well. Her plants and guppies thrive. I am hoping to achieve the same thing with my own planted guppy tank so I really want this light to work for me, it’s extremely affordable. *IF/WHEN* it works, it’s definitely worth the price when compared to some of the bigger name brands. - Brightness is good for a 5.5 gallon. I haven't had it long enough yet to observe plant or algae growth. - Clip seems sturdy, but it is a fixed alignment with no adjustment. - When mounted lengthwise on a rectangular tank, the light bar does not span the whole length of the tank, nor is it in the middle, so there's more light on the side under the light than the other. - The light is not horizontal. So it throws a lot of light outside one side of the aquarium. - If you sit near it, make sure it is below your eye level or else the bulbs will be in your peripheral vision. - The back of the light gets pretty hot. A well ventilated location seems necessary. Timer The clock and settings reset on loss of power. So I can't rely on it. Further, I could set the time but couldn't set the on/off schedule. So I plugged it into my timer plug. When my plug switches on, the light takes a minute to turn on. If you want a light with a reliable built in timer, this is not for you. If you want to control brightness and/or color, this is not easy. If your tank is bigger than 5 or 10 gallons and rectangular, this won't do. ... show more

I purchased this light for a Marineland 5 gal portrait tank. I installed it a few days ago and really like it, I have the blues on 100% and the whites at 55%. Ptogramming the timer was very easy. Only negative - if the clamp is fully secured to the rim of the tank the light sits at an upward angle. I loosened the knob and now it is level with the tank but not as secure. This is a fantastic little light for a small fish tank. I bought the salt water one. The timer is useless. It does not turn on by itself or off and when it says you can decrease the lighting a half hour before it turns on and off does not work so if you need something that turns off and on by itself, do not buy this product, you have to turn it on manually and off ... show more

    • Great bright lite but too much for a 5 gal portrait aquarium
I ended up using the original light that came with the Marineland 5 gal portrait instead of this. I have live Java moss, Java fern, Bacopa and Ludwega and wanted a bright enough light to have them grow well. The only thing that grew well was the algae. I used the Fluval Stratum Planted Tank Substrate which probably aided the algae growth. I tried cutting back on food, time lite was on and many other suggestions to stop algae growth but ended up going back to the original lite that came with the aquarium This is a great lite just didn't work well with my small aquarium. Bought this for a 3-gallon rimless tank after a positive experience with a Nicrew ClassicLED Plus V2 Aquarium light. This clip-on has two "channels" - one for the white/red, & one for the blue lights. When programming, the start & stop times apply to both channels. Only the balance (intensity) between white/red & blue can be set. The start/stop times cannot be set independently. They all come on at the same time, they all go off at the same time. I can't run blue lights past the white/red shutoff time, which is disappointing. Other than that, it's solid... ... show more
