  • We use a lot of ice in our household... We love this thing.
This gets a 5 star rating from me. It's built really well and it's very quick at putting out ice. My wife and I are bartenders and have get togethers with friends at least once a week. We make so many cocktails that the refrigerator ice maker couldn't keep up with us. Rather than buy bags of ice, or bag the ice during the week from the fridge to save for "cocktail nights" I looked into getting something else that made ice without the pain of freezing ice cubes in trays (I hate to be lazy, but I wasn't going to do that every week). For those confused about how this thing works, it's pretty basic and any bad review about having to do this or that to keep the machine making ice should be ignored. It has a holding area for water. Keep that filled. We have a blender next to this thing and we just fill the blender basket with water and dump it in the ice maker (takes two fills and about 20 seconds to do). You're all set for quite a bit of ice after that. In about 15 minutes you'll have your first dump of ice cubes. The tray that holds the ice cubes inside of the machine has slits on the bottom so when the ice in the machine melts, it goes right back into the process of making more ice. We always use the large cube setting and the ice melts nicely with the drinks. I'm not a huge fan of "red", but I don't really care since this icemaker does its job very well. We have it sitting on the kitchen counter and the window on the top of the door is kind of pointless, but who cares... if you had it sitting lower it may be really useful to someone. There is very little effort to keep the icemaker focused on its job... making ice. The lights on the front do exactly what they're supposed to. Green means on and the size of cube choice. Red means either "I'm out of water... fill me", or the bin is full of ice. There is a big metal sensor on the inside right of the machine. If you want an insane amount of ice, just do this trick... If an ice cube comes in contact with this sensor, just take the little scoop it comes with and move some of the ice away from it. It'll pump out a ton of more ice. If the sensor didn't exist then this machine would keep making ice until it ran out of water. The only thing I noticed is that if you let it run out of water, and then fill it, it may not continue to make ice. Just press the power button and wait like 10 seconds. The machine will turn off and then the pump releases the water back into the holding tank. Turn it back on and you'll hear the pump fire back up and it will begin the icemaking process all over again. I love it, and we have used it EVERY day since it arrived. One thing to note is that it does not have a freezing/refrigeration type of cooling to keep the ice frozen. It will and does melt back into the icemaking process. We don't really care because it's in a constant rotation of making ice and don't consider it any kind of deal breaker. It would greatly increase the cost, I'm sure. Along with the size and probably the electricity it would use. I could definitely see this as an RV must have, or even on a boat. Bartender tested and approved. ... show more

  • Heed the advice of others who've succeeded with repairs
Nov 2009: bought the red Nostalgia ice maker similar to this one, despite some negative reviews on Amazon. Result: beautiful ice, reliably, for 2 months! Then it stopped working. Maybe I should have bought a warranty, but who can schlepp 50 pounds to the UPS, let alone resurrect a box to fit. Jan 2010: nostalgic for the Nostalgia (and still unwilling to haul more bags of ice from the store), I bought this lovely red machine. All who come to visit say, first, "What is it?" and then, with either envy or incomprehension that anyone could want a constant supply of ice, "It's very attractive!" Aug 2010: Attractive is as attractive does. Who needs an attractive red box that does absolutely nothing taking up kitchen counter space? That's right: the second machine just stopped working too, all by itself. Granted its 7-month record beat the other by almost half a year. Small comfort. Aug 5: I'm gonna buy a third ice machine of some similar kind. They're easy to set up, use very little energy, offer ice all the time as long as you keep the water reservoir filled, and comfort you in the night with the small sound of ice cubes dropping into the plastic basket. There will be ice tomorrow, you say to yourself and turn over and drop off to sleep. Aug 7 (2 days later): before replacing this red box, I read as many Amazon buyers' reviews of ice machines as I could find that had been consistently in use for 12 months or more. It paid off. Since these ice machines seem given to easily breaking down, I found half a dozen folks here who'd been brave enough to fix theirs and to say how. Rather than lay out another couple hundred bucks, I took their advice: from one owner's experience, I emptied the water chamber and filled it again with tap water (not distilled or spring as I'd been using), and from another's, I did the silly thing of pounding on the machine's sides with the flat of my hand. (Another had cleaned out a small filter he'd taken from inside the machine's guts, but I didn't want to disassemble mine.) Lo, the tap water and hand-pounding worked. As I walked out of the room, within 2 minutes I heard ice being made again. Ran back and sure enough: beautiful ice! The machine's been working fine again ever since (another half week later now). As I say, pay attention to what experienced owners say! ... show more

  • Worried it will break - but so far so good ...
I needed this ice maker for use in a horse trailer where we travel and bagged ice is hard to come by. Reviews seemed to be great or terrible. Seemed to work out of the box or not. Or died in a month or not. So I went ahead and bought one. So far so good. Here is how I am using my and what I do to make sure it works. First I took the suggestion to let the unit sit upright after shipping for 24 hours before using. Then used the machine at home to test out and it worked great. Now to my intended usage. Placed the unit in my horse trailer living quarters and hauled off down the road for 5 hours with I am sure some bouncing. Destination - trailer was warm, water was warm and the thing made tiny ice and not much of it. Let it run and it finally picked up speed and did fantastic again. Next trip 4 hours. My trailer refrigerator has a tiny freezer. Put two trays of ice in that before I left. Upon arriving I dumped the two bags into the ice maker, added water and with the chilled water the ice maker churned out cubes on the first cycle. The ice maker keeps a family of three adults in ice easily. I put extra ice in a tub and put in my small freezer and run the machine during the day. Several times it filled with ice that I didn't use and would do the melt and re-make cycle thing. As others have stated this is not a FREEZER. It makes ice. If you don't use it the ice melts and drips back into tank to be recycled into cubes again. So two trips out and I am pleased. Cross my fingers it continues to work - because it if does it is a great appliance. ... show more

  • This type of ice maker is great choice, scroll down to find out why.
I absolutely love my recent purchase of this Newair bullet Ice Machine. and yes I bought it in this beautiful red-shinny color. Shortly after I bought it, I was about to cancel the order as I did not know if I really wanted the ice machine in a red-shinny color. Instead of canceling my order, I decided to keep the order and wait until it was delivered to see if I like it. I am so glad I made the right decision as it looks really great with my other countertop appliances which are black in color and I also have a stainless steel worktable which they all compliment one anotuer and I love that the shinny-red color grabs your attention. My very 1st ice machine set on the floor and it had hot and cold water dispenser as well which cost over $300 which I had to send it back for a full refund as there was some issues with the machine. Seriously, think about it most of these ice machines, once the ice is made you need to transfer the ice cubes to your freezer as the ice cubes will melt. So why waste time standing there in front of the machine and push a button and wait for the ice to be dispensed into your glass. Plus once the ice cubes are made; the ice is wet on the outside and starting to melt before it was dropped into your glass. Once you transfer the wet ice cubes from the removable ice bin (that is part of this machine) and transfers these wet ice cubes to your freezer ice bin, after a short time, the outside of these wet ice cubes are now dry. ... show more

  • Product Worked Great, Broke and Customer Service is all DYI. ADVISED TO AVOID! Product Worked Great, Broke and Customer Service is all DYI. ADVISED TO AVOID!
This product worked great at first, broke within (6) months and the NewAir "warranty" is a fabrication. I had been satisfied with my NewAir Ice-maker until the brittle plastic ice-tray broke. When I called for "Service" I was sent a poorly constructed replacement part (after two attempts + Shipping to get the correct part). I subsequently found that the entire machine is sub-standard and repairing it was impossible without a degree in electrical engineering and bevy of tools at your disposal. I have many complaints with this company and their product. I am giving it a (1) Star Review for poor customer service and failure to adhere to the “written warranty statement.” 1) The so-called “Warranty” is an absolute farce. The “One Year Warranty” claims that parts and repair service is available in your area area. This is simply a fabrication and an absolute misrepresentation. After my second request, and multiple photos, I received the correct part with “Instructions for Repair.” Not a service technician- but a way to "do it myself." Yeah!!! a. The instructions for repair were vague, incomplete and required over a dozen different screwdrivers of varying lengths and sizes. Also, wire cutters, soldering skills and a magnifying glass to repair. b. Additionally, the ice-maker itself is poorly made. Making the screws almost impossible to remove as they are simply embedded into poorly constructed plastic and strip out when trying to remove. c. Although I was able to remove the screws from the ice-maker, fabricated from brittle, terribly constructed and cut-rate plastic, I was then instructed to “cut zip ties holding the motor, electrical harness and switches to dismantle the entire machine to be able to get to the broken part.” IS NEWAIR TRAINING CUSTOMERS TO WORK ON THEIR ASSEMBLY LINE? If so, I am not interested in the job. d. During this process the sub-standard solder connections quickly broke and after wasting over (2) hours to attempt to repair the unit I simply had to throw it in the garbage. e. The most ridiculous part of the entire process is that the NewAir “Warranty” states that these repairs would be performed by a “service professional in my area.” This was not offered and when I asked their customer service department I was told that all repairs were to be made by the end-user. (A.K.A., Assembly Line Customers in Training). i. This company chooses to blatantly lie to consumers and the “Warranty” should include the following items and skills. 1. At least four different screw drivers of varying sizes. 2. A considerable knowledge of electrical skills, soldering, reassembly of delicate electrical wiring and ability to reassemble a complex product made of inferior materials. 3. The patience to repair a $150 product at a pay rate of $75/HR. Also, ending up with the ice-maker in your waste bin. So, I guess I lost $300 dollars after purchase and repair attempts? You got to "no when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em." It absolutely sickens me that this company sells so many units to customers and, in the end, you will receive a cut-rate product and company full of lies, misrepresentation and inferior product quality. I expect no response from this company as it holds no value in the experience of the consumer. Thanks for making garbage and selling it on Amazon! ... show more

  • Makes more ice than my Kenmore side by side!
I didn't believe that this unit could make as much ice as the description says. I bought it because my 6 month old side by side can only make 8 cubes every 3-4 hours (It actually says that in the owners manual). This little thing filled my side by side's ice tray, itself, a couple of water glasses, then we turned it off. Nowhere to put all that ice. It is unbelievable how quickly this little machine makes ice. Plus, all the comments about how quiet it is are right. It makes noise, but it is not an issue at all! I haven't owned it long, so I can't comment on longevity, but even if it lasts a year, it would be worth it to stop running out of ice. 07/04/2014 - Averaging 80 cubes of big ice per hour. I put so much of this ice into my Kenmore that 95% of the ice coming our of the Kenmore was made by this NewAir. Loving it so far! 07/26/2014 This sucker is making all the ice I thought my Kenmore should make. Love the ice size, but it does have a LOT of surface for warming. I am now taking all the ice it makes and put it into the ice bin in my Kenmore. This machine is un-freaking-believable. When it dies, I'm buying another one. 10/25/2014 Having a gathering on Sunday. We take the ice from the Newair, bag it, and put it in the freezer so I don't have to buy any. We are still loving this ice maker. Fast forward to 10/28/2019 - I had to take this ice maker to the landfill. It worked its butt off for years 24/7 and produced more ice than you can imagine. I actually felt bad having to put it out to pasture. So what did I do? I found one on newair.com that I liked and bought it on that site. I would have bought it from Amazon, but I got 10% off at the newair site. They make great ice makers!!! ... show more

  • I LOVE this Icemaker!! (UPDATE Dec.10, 2021)
UPDATE. The ice maker worked great until it suddenly didn't. It simply stopped making ice 2 months after the manufactures warranty expired. Fortunately I bought a 4 yr protection plan, which I'm using to replace it. The problem is finding one for ~$160 that actually makes large ice bullets and can keep the ice frozen for a while (like this one did). I may end up buying another (with another 4yr protection plan) and hoping for the best. Any recommendations for a reliable replacement would be appreciated. I bought this product on October 15, 2020, so I've used to for a few weeks. I still think the ice maker is well worth the money, but I want to offer some (hopefully) helpful observations. - While the ice is created quickly (~7 minutes), It also dissolves in liquid pretty quickly (~ 10 minutes) because of the way it's made. Since it's basically a hollow bullet, liquid flows both inside and outside, so it dissolves faster than a solid cube. - If you use it regularly, you will need to refill the water compartment about every other day. I strongly suggest using purified drinking water. I tried using water from my faucet and could tell the difference - The motor can make a small room warmer than usual. Mine is in a small office and, besides the noise of the motor, the room is warmer than the rest of the house. This is probably the case with any portable ice maker. I wanted a portable ice maker for my office, but didn't want to install a separate water line. The ice maker is the PERFECT alternative. I drink about five 24oz glasses of fluid a day and didn't want to leave the office all the time for ice. This ice maker makes large sized ice in about 10 minutes, so there's always ice available when I want it. The ONLY drawback is that the fan it a little noisy when making the ice, but not loud enough to be distracting. I LOVE IT! ... show more

  • NewAir AI-100R 100R portable Ice Maker
I bought this NewAir AI-100R portable Ice Maker in March 2011 as a birthday gift to my husband. He likes to drink an ice water or ice with juice all the time. At the very first couple times of using that icemaker, I had to spill the newly made ice cylinders, because they smelled like plastic, but after that we did not have any problem with the taste of the ice. In 1 month after I bought the ices maker, we had some important family event and had to have a constant flow of the people in the apartment. For a week we had about 60-80 visiting people per day. For all that time my new Ice maker was working and making ice non-stop from 7:00 AM till 11:00 PM. I was really glad that I was able to make enough ice for all our visitors and was proud to demonstrate them my new ice maker. And I think that I saved so much money by making my own ice instead of buying it at the supermarket! Ice maker was working fine every time I need some ice since I bought it (for 9 months already). If you have guests, you just have to start making ice in advance and store fresh ice in the freezer. I use clean plastic bags to store fresh ice. If you are expecting a large group of people, it is better to start making ice a day before the event to store enough. Ice maker makes some noise, but it is mild and does not bother anyone. The freshly made ice is wet, and it sticks to each other at the freezer. I have a habit to stir ice cubes in the plastic bag to separate them from each other after it was sitting in the freezer for 15-20 min. At the hot summer time, when you start ice maker after it was off for certain amount of time, the 1st portion of the ice cylinders will be very wet, thin and flimsy and it is better to dump it back to the water tank. After that there is no problem. Minor inconvenience is that even though machine has a red light on to indicate that there is no more water at the water tank, there are always some water left at the water tank. I always must spill out unused water. The removal of the water is done by the little pipe at the bottom of the ice maker that has covered by a metal cap (attached to the machine) and a little tiny plastic plug (unattached to anything and very easy to drop). If you will loose that tiny plug, then you will have a big problem. Better to be careful and do not drop and loose it. We love our ice maker and its red color adds a cheerful atmosphere to my kitchen. ... show more
