After running this for about 3 years and inspecting the spent filter after a filter change I have to say this is high quality construction, and it held up very well. On the third year, I was mostly using the filter water for coffee. The taste of the water for year 1 and even year 2 was very good. I used this filter as the second filter as the main filter, in a 3 cartrige filter system, with fluoride reduction filter running as pre-filter, and carbon (GAC) as a post filter. In this system I ran a mineral analysis for metals near sometime around 2.5 years of use, and the sampled water passed quite well. I was worried about high copper from the KDF55, or aluminum from my first stage fluoride filter, but to my relief, aluminum did not show up, and copper was low. Zinc did show up, but still at acceptable and beneficial levels. ... show more

This is my first replacement filter for my New Wave Filtration System. I've had this system for a year now and I figured it was time to replace it even though it's just me that uses it because my water SUCKS ... I have well water that has lime AND rust and often has sediment in it. My cat got a bladder stone before I started using one of the Pitcher filters ... after years of fiddling with them I decided to get a full on 10 stage filter and I don't regret it one bit. These filters really do take all the smells, sediments, and other undesirable stuff out of the water. Believe me, if it makes MY water palatable it really IS a good filter! Getting the housing undone was a little bit of a challenge. They suggest that you use vinegar and water soak to get it loose ... I used that, then got a small hammer and TAPPED around the area of the threads as well as downward on the bottom of the housing. I also have a strap to un-do an under-sink filter that we have in another area of the apartment and used that to help me get a grip on the housing so I could loosen the bottom and get the housing apart. Once it was undone it was simple to change the filter, though I did find that the inside of the housing needed a bit of a clean. They suggest putting Petroleum Jelly on the threads to make loosening the housing easier next time around. I am a reviewer but I bought this at full price. Whether I pay full price or receive an item for a discount, all opinions are mine alone and reflect my personal experience with the item. ... show more

I purchased my base unit about a year and a half ago. The original filter finally gave out. I kind of wish I'd unscrewed the unit and looked inside, before connecting it to my sink. The filter is pretty neat! I definitely took the variety of filter media for granted (the cylinder is see through). Anyway, it was time to replace it, and I had some anxiety about making the right choice, not wanting to feel ripped off (like when you have to buy Brita replacements - the cost can add up). I price shopped for a while and ended up getting this on sale. It was a great deal! It was REALLY hard to unscrew the unit, to remove the old filter, but a friend helped out. I detached the hose and spigot, and drained the unit. He inserted a philips head screwdriver and gave it a good twist. Once separated, it took maybe 5 seconds to replace. It's like screwing a lid onto a coffee mug. The filter drops inside the canister, and that's it. The instructions recommend greasing the seals with petroleum jelly, but I don't buy Vaseline and they looked fine. So, I didn't bother. I think if the base unit has worked for you, the filter is worth replacing. I don't feel the need to upgrade. And my water tastes SO much better with a fresh filter! ... show more

I have used the New Wave Enviro 10 stage plus water filter system for about 10 years. I replace the cartridge once a year. I can really taste the difference in my water and it is comforting to know that it is not just about good tasting water, but more importantly, it's filtering out contaminants. My only complaint is that it's a struggle to get the base of the unit off in order to replace the cartridge. I can never do it myself because I don't have the strength. I always have to ask a man to do it for me, and they struggle just like I do, but eventually it does come off. I do lubricate with the threads with vaseline but after a year's use, it is like it's cemented together. Once the base is removed it's very easy to complete the process. Even with this once a year challenge I continue to use this product and highly recommend it. Think of all the plastic bottles of water you don't use! And my ice cubes never smell.
