I've tried a few different 3rd party USB-C hubs, and all of them worked for a short while (anywhere from 1-6 months), and then they just stopped. They failed in the worst way too: I couldn't display a mirrored or expanded desktop through the hub. That's the primary reason for the hubs, and I specifically wanted USB-C because the surface connect link is unreliable and would often lose connection in the middle of my presentations while using the Surface Dock. Also, the Surface Dock is very large, has two bricks, and a short power cable. Thus, USB-C hubs that can power the Surface Book if needed but mainly just something to present with and maybe give me an additional port. This one works out of the box, and it continues to work 10 months later under the same use conditions that killed 3rd party hubs with similar features. This, however, lacks a passthrough USB-C charging feature. Honestly, MS needs to ditch that glitchy Surface Connect port and just go all-in on USB-C charging. Hence the minus 1 star. I'd have given 4.5 stars if it were possible.

Did exactly what I needed it to. Give my laptop a second monitor. Using a surface laptop 3, although I’m sure this will link up with no problem. This makes doing schoolwork and research so much easier. I have some more ports to plug stuff into and when I want to unplug and take my laptop I can. Of course now I am sheltering in place, but you get the idea. My only gripe is that sometimes the second monitor will just up and lose its connection to the hub and I have to manually unplug and plug back in the usb-c connection of the hub back into the laptop; this fixes everything but it can be annoying. This seems to happen when I am executing certain programs but I can’t figure out exactly why. And that’s where my computer expertise ends.

I have a Surface X which has limited connections (i.e. only USB-C). I have the Surface Dock 2 that I used for multiple USB (a/c) as well as HDMI connections to multiple monitors and external drives. Unfortunately I did not have access to the Surface Dock 2 and was in a bind so ordered this because I did not want to invest another $100 bucks beyond the cost of the travel hub. I use it primarily for connecting to an external USB-A connections on an as needed basis (the full size I used all the time without issues). I have not tried the VGA or Ethernet connections on this particular model. Based on my usage, I have not experienced the over heating or connection issues (with other types of connections) that have been expressed in some of the other reviews.

This is a must have if you 🧳 and have multiple monitors. It is so much smaller than the picture lets u think it is. And the cord stores away inside itself. Very convenient.

This hub works great for connecting my Surface Duo 2 to whatever I need.. except power USB-A, Ethernet, and HDMI work fine, but the USB-C does not support pass-through charging. I tried the phone's USB-C charger and cable into the hub's USB-C input, and also the hub's USB-C cable into the phone's USB-C charger, but nothing is powered. Unfortunately, the next option from Microsoft that has pass-though charging is the Surface Dock 2, which has a proprietary Surface connector. Next time I'll go with the Targus USB-C Dual HDMI 4K Docking Station. Same price and has power pass-through with dual 4k HDMI at 60Hz.

If your laptop is more than a year or so old the 4k60 isn't going to work. (Surface Go only does 4k30 with this) displayport1.2 alt mode over usb-c only supports 4k60 on single function or hdmi/usb2 data adapters. None of the 3 laptops I tested this with have dp1.4 so they only support 4k30 with this adapter. Even though they all list that they support 4k60, and will push it through a single function club3d c-to-hdmi dongle. Etherent, VGA, and a USB-A mouse work fine with this.
