Update 02/27/21 - It's been a little over a year since I bought this router and I thought it would be time to post a quick update. The router has been nearly flawless since I solved the initial READYSHARE issue. It's used probably 16 hours a day for work and school from home, streaming video from the connected external hard drive and more. Update 05/11/20 - A day after installing a Seagate 8TB external USB 3.0 drive to the C7800, it stopped being recognized on the PC via \\READYSHARE. I was still able to connect to the drive using VLC on my Samsung Note 9, but I was getting an SMB1 error on WIN10 which didn't make any sense as had been working just fine. After poking around online I found that the SMB1 protocol is out of date and using it opens you to vulnerabilities, I almost gave up and then decided to try to reset the router to its default configuration. In doing so, it upgraded my firmware from 3.01.40 to 3.01.43 and it also fixed the \\READYSHARE issue - go figure. ORIGINAL COMMENTS BELOW: So far, so good. I am getting strong WIFI on 2nd floor of house with the router located in basement. The 1st floor sub-flooring in our home is concrete and steel (1930's junior beam construction) and I had previously had issues getting any signal to 2nd floor even with WIFI extenders. My setup was painless as well as the Comcast installer called it in and had them activate it while he was onsite doing the cable install. I am connected to Comcast 100mbps service and am seeing slightly over 120mbps speeds on Speedtest via a Cat6 ethernet cable.. Roku and Tablo are flying along now. Will update as we get more time and use out of it. The 114mbps screen grab was done on my Samsung Note 9 using 5G wifi from the 2nd floor of our house. The router is in the basement and the signal has to go through steel I-beam and concrete subflooring on the 1st floor. We have Comcast 100mbps service, so it exceeds what we are paying for and the range is phenomenal. We used to need a wifi extender to get any signal bars on the 2nd floor of the house.

This device worked flawlessly for approximately 2 months, to include almost 20 devices. Then it stopped working properly. All bands continually would disconnect, drop, lag, or just stop working. I spent well over 25 hours on the phone with the manufacturer/warranty company over a 3 month time period allowing them to trouble shoot the device. Cable company physically inspected the line and measured readings at 1000mbs. The company knows it is a defective product. The company sent me another refurbished item and it was just the same problem over and over and over. Next they tell me to return both, and they will refund my money, I send them back. They receive them and then tell me in writing they will not refund the money and will be physically sending me back the original unit I just sent back. I can not beleive the amount of money and time I have spent on this modem/router. Utterly the essence of stuck on stupid. BEWARE.

I have to tell you, I'm a bit disappointed in this, but I need to give some background. I have cable internet and the modem/router I had was an N-band router and 90% my stuff is AC, so I wanted to take advantage of the speed. I have a background in IT and Network Admin, so I'm familiar with the setup, config, etc. The router is awesome and supports my cable setup and I get 20 Mbps over what I'm 'supposed' to get with my service. Setup & config were easy. I enabled parental controls for my teenagers and daughter, also turned on access control so I can bounce anyone I don't want on the network or suspend access for my kids during certain hours. I use the Netgear Genie app on my phone for quick configs/changes/access control and it's awesome. All that said, here lies my problem. The 5Ghz band will cut out when devices come online--smart TVs, other laptops or gaming devices. It allows the TV on, but bounces anyone gaming. Occasionally, it'll actually drop both SSIDs (5/2.4 GHz) and not come back until I reboot the router entirely. Once it comes back, it's good, but it's getting frustrating. I'm probably going to have to wire a portion of my home for CAT6 and just wire in for anything using bandwidth. I love the Nighthawk, but this is killing me.

We currently use Cox as our internet provider. The gateway Cox provided was constantly dropping out. There was very little consistency in the service plus paying a monthly rental fee wasn't worth it. So, we decided to move to this router/cable modem combo. I have used Netgear products in the past and wasn't too impressed. But this particular combo was super easy to set up. I transferred my wifi information over and had very few issues getting devices to reconnect. Since installing a few weeks ago, we have had no interruptions of service. Plus, I like that there are 4 ports to hardwire devices, supports speeds over 1gig, has dual bandwidth (2.4 and 5) which is necessary for newer devices and has a much stronger wifi signal. Yes, it costs more but will pay itself back since we are no longer paying the rental fee which was about $130 a year. For now this is a good choice for us.

Decided to save a few bucks and stop renting my modem from Comcast. This worked without any fuss. I have a small home, 1,150 sqft. This covers all the rooms, with bandwidth enough for all four people in the house to be on Zoom meetings. Can stream HD videos and all that. Knocked it down to 4 stars because it started acting up one day and my kids and I were unable to do our Zoom meetings. The bandwidth had slowed to something like 10Mbs download, even from the wired connection. I finally did a factory reset to get it working again, after I realized that even the connection to the router admin page wasn't working. It's been working well since the reset.

Excellent modem/router and works with WOW. I purchased this because WOW sucks and their modems suck. I was renting their modem for $11 a month a getting ~15 mbps and 90 ping download despite paying for 70. The last month I’ve been calling and complaining that I’m only getting 0.1-1.0 mbps (yes, that low). They told me there has been an outrage for over a week. I hung up and called a competitor who is willing to give me gig service for the same monthly price. I took that as an opportunity to set an install date and ditch WOW. Step 1 was to buy a modem/router to handle the new gig service. This one looked very capable and it’s all in one. Netgear makes fair products so I jump on it. The specs and reviews look favorable. Step 2 was to get it set up until my install date. I get it in the mail and open it up. Chunky boi. I like it. I unscrew the coax from the old one and plug this one right in. I call up WOW and give them my new MAC address. I go from no internet to internet within 10 minutes of unboxing. Too easy. Step 3 was running a speed test and realizing I NOW GET WHAT I ACTUALLY PAY FOR. 65 mbps downloads all day. Step 4 I call WOW back and tell them their hardware is garbage. They tell me it’s due to an outage. I tell them I just bought my own modem and it solved my connection issues. I cancel service with them. The new ISP just set up and I’m running 870 mbps with 10 ms ping. WOW sucks. Their service sucks, their hardware sucks, the business model sucks. The 8700 is great. Meets every expectation I had. My back room where I had 2-3 bars of WiFi is now a full strength. Full strength everyone in the house. My devices can now fully utilize 5ghz WiFi. I get WiFi out to the edge of my property (router is on an exterior wall). A+. Recommended.

I had to replaced the modem/router combo from my internet service provider because my Smart-TV keeps buffering with frequent start/stop while I’m streaming my favorite shows the entire time and it was getting really frustrating. The Netgear nighthawk x4s WiFi cable modem router is a beast and really delivered. The setup was easy using the Netgear genie app. The WiFi range is awesome and I am covered from upstairs to downstairs and the speed is beyond what I thought was possible. I am now able to stream on multiple devices without any lags or buffering as before. All my streaming devices are playing on 4K format with Dolby Atmos audio format for sounds so I need a modem/router that is able to handle the large data/bandwidth and Netgear performs as advertised if not better. I did a wired speed test through my ISP and the speed actually exceed the plan that I am on at 570 Mbps which is unbelievable. The technicians from mediacom that came to set up my internet service for my new home were envious of the Netgear C7800 and wished that they had their own. I am also excited that this purchase for modem/router combo is well worth it and I’m also future proof for the next few years! Thank you for this amazing product!

Completely changing my review. I purchased March 2022 and thought the router sucked. Their customer service does suck but GOD BLESS YOUTUBE. Router kept on disconnecting and had poor reception. I left a horrible review bashing the router. Was getting ready to buy CAT6 Cable and run a cable from the router in the Livingroom into my attic and then to my master bedroom but then had a feeling to YouTube "Nighthawk Router Drops WIFI" and after watching a few videos OMG!!! Learned so much that was common scenes! The factory settings SUCK and your WIFI will suck!!!!! Watch some YouTube videos and you have to change the 2.4/5 Ghz channels and some of the settings and OMG my internet connection is rock solid in a 3000 sq/ft house with zero drops! I apologize for bashing the router for my lack of knowledge. If you currently own this router don't even call them, just watch a few YouTube videos on "NightHawk Settings" and you can fix all your issues!!!
