  • Works Ok, but has some weird problems
Style: 12 port | 10G | 2xSFP+ | Managed
After 6 months of use, overall I will say the XS512EM switch works good. The slight buzzing sound of the fan is mildly annoying when standing close to the switch, but it is not very loud. Not sure why they couldn't just use a fan that doesn't buzz. It makes it sound defective. I originally deployed the switch as a simple network with no tagged VLANs defined (factory config). I had no problems with this config. I recently added a guest/public network to my router and set the switch up to run 2 VLANs. I added a new PVID to 2 ports for the new VLAN and left the original network untagged (VLAN1). Then I added a tagged VLAN output to the trunk port connecting the switch to my router for the VLAN assigned to the guest network . Most everything worked, but I started seeing strange firewall hits on my untagged LAN with broadcast IPs bleeding over from the new tagged VLAN on the trunk. The trunk was configured with VLAN1 untagged and VLAN20 tagged (so I expected nothing from VLAN20 to leak into VLAN1, but it did). Ultimately I ended up fixing it by adding a new VLAN10 (tagged on the trunk) and moving the ports used for VLAN1 to VLAN10. However, packets from a tagged VLAN should never show on a trunk in an Untagged state (i sniffed other untagged VLAN1 ports, and didn't find any bleedover). Most of the hits I saw were from the guest networks broadcast IP / port 15600 and came from my Samsung TV. Reference info for Netgear if they want to duplicate this issue and fix it (not going to call I am outside my free support). Based on their release notes from their last firmware update 1.0.2.5 and other peoples comments about broadcast issues with this switch, it looks like their firmware still needs some work. ... show more

  • Actually terrible customer service from Netgear and the switch has a high failure rate
Style: 10 port | Multi-Gig | 2xUplinks | Managed
Below is my original review, scroll further down for an update: Pros: Works as advertised. Plus comes with a lifetime warranty. Cons: Gets very hot. This is the hottest switch I've ever owned. I have a 5 port 2.5Gbe Unmanaged switch which stays much cooler than this one. The side with the 10Gbe ports gets very hot. I actually have a small case fan pointed at the switch. It's under a desk so I was able to do that. I don't know if it's fine and all within normal operating spec. UPDATE: Turns out running hot does cause issues. One of the 10G ports started "freezing", the one I was using as an uplink so which did all the heavy lifting with the traffic. It would be seen but no data would be received by either end and when I unplugged the cable, the lights would stay on. Rebooting it would fix the problem only for a few hours. I looked through the recent reviews here and Googled it a bit and it seems this is becoming an increasingly common problem with this switch. It's being RMA-ed a lot by customers. Be aware of that when you make your decision. The bigger problem was Netgear customer service. I purchased a couple of these switches. One I kept for myself (and was the one I reviewed above, the original date of the review was 8/3/22). Before this I purchased a switch that should have been new and it was an obviously used switch with no power adapter. I returned that, then got another. It looked used but had everything, so I kept it (it was also purchased 'new'). A few weeks later I purchased a used one, sold by Amazon.com LLC themselves, who Netgear say is an authorized reseller. That was on 8/18. That switch actually looked great, in pristine condition. That switch wound up at my work's network. I was reimbursed for it. I purchased used for them because they're just going to toss it and buy a new one if it ever fails (and if the switch looked bad, Amazon takes returns). So when I opened an RMA for my own switch, I attached the wrong invoice. The RMA was denied because they said it was purchased used. I said basically oops, my bad. Attached the correct invoice. Also pointed to this review (of my switch, as you can tell from my review, it was used by me in my home) which was posted 8/3 and the invoice I sent them said 8/18. Clearly, wrong invoice. Unless I time traveled. I also questioned why they are considering Amazon.com an "original purchaser" when in fact it is an authorized reseller. They have no way of knowing (outside of someone else registering the serial number) whether the used switch was purchased by someone else or why Amazon.com is labeling it used, it could have just looked used or been beat up and sold as used instead since they became wary of all the used items going out as new and being returned. The 'used' switch came out newer than the first actual 'new' switch I had bought and had to return because it was missing pieces. If it WAS used, then Amazon refurbished it, but sold it as used. Their response? Nothing. Just copy-pasted the warranty info to me a few times while ignoring everything I said and closed the case. Mind you, this isn't the first time they closed the case. The first time I opened a case for this switch, the person asked me to do some troubleshooting steps. I did. They closed that case without responding. So then I opened a new case which then led to the above. I've got a new switch with an allegedly lifetime warranty and Netgear basically is ignoring me. I've already bought a replacement (from QNAP, since I've had a few of their switches, they work great and don't run hot... it was the one with 2 10G uplinks and a few 2.5G ports and it costs less than this switch). I'm probably just going to sell this switch for parts on eBay. So yeah. To sum it up: #1: Faulty switch. The 10G ports just run too hot. The switch needed to have a fan. They compromised too much. Read all the recent reviews and Google it, the failure rate is too high for comfort. #2: Absolutely terrible customer service from Netgear. There's a reason they offer lifetime warranties on business products. If you're a business, they'll probably listen to you, and they know any time they screw you over here and there, you'll write off the losses and keep coming back. That's what that entire branding is for. But if you're a person buying a business labeled product, they can outright deny you the warranty on any pretext. Sometimes none! The agent closed the case for the first time for NO reason. No response. Just marked as resolved. If you wanna get on the phone with them and hound them, you can probably get them to cooperate. I'm fairly certain I could make an agent understand the situation in a voice conversation. And I assume they're not gonna be like their online counterparts and just hang up on me or anything. But they've left a bad taste in my mouth and I don't want another switch which will be a ticking time bomb. I've already replaced it with a different model from QNAP. And a refurb switch from an RMA with Netgear *should* carry no warranty (because you can't be the original purchaser of a refurbished model by definition, going by their language they repeatedly spammed me with, which makes no exceptions for refurbished items) and has to be sold as used on eBay as well, going by eBay's rules. Even if Netgear say their refurbished RMA items are under warranty, be aware the warranty itself does NOT say that. It clearly says: "All NETGEAR warranties (as opposed to statutory guarantees or non-excludable statutory warranties), including any implied warranties, are valid only for the period of time the NETGEAR product is owned by the “original purchaser” of the product. The “original purchaser,” for the purposes of this warranty, is the first purchaser of the product from NETGEAR or a NETGEAR authorized reseller. All NETGEAR limited warranties, including lifetime warranties, are not transferable." Let's put aside the fact that "first purchaser of the product from an authorized reseller" ALSO applies to anyone buying a unit marked as used/refurb from that reseller. Basically everytime the reseller sells an item, the purchaser becomes the first purchaser from that reseller (as long as there's no middlemen or inbetween steps between the purchaser and the reseller). The reseller taking possession of the item resets that. Maybe they should run these things by their lawyers before putting it up on their website. They defined original purchaser in terms of a first purchaser then bungled that definition up too. The bigger issue is that statement rules out refurbished products received by RMA (and they know what they're doing, there's a section saying they will use refurb products for RMAs, but makes no mention of any warranty on *those*). You know their service is bad if you've experienced service that was actually good. I tend to be brand loyal to companies with good customer service. I was under the impression Netgear was one. I was wrong. Now that I know this I just simply don't want to have anything to do with them or their products. I really hope none of the other Netgear stuff I currently own fails. ... show more

  • Speeds in excess of 10 Gbps! Fairly quiet! And not too hot to touch!
Style: 12 port | 10G | 2xSFP+ | Managed
I owned their 8-port 10Gb switch for more than five years before it finally started to give up the ghost, occasionally turning itself off and on, and probably overheating, such that speeds became limited to the 200 MBps range. In previous times, it had given me as much as 1070 MBps, and I had already been pleased since that was faster than its 10 Gbps advertised speed. But hold onto your horses, folks! This new, 12-port 10Gb switch showed me speeds peaking at 1900 MBps (yes, 1.9 GBps, nearly double its rated speed!!!!!) today while transferring a large file, with sustained transfers in the 1400 Mbps range going on for more than a minute! At the same time, its dual fans are really not very loud at all, certainly no louder than the single fan was in the 8-port switch, and it doesn't get too hot, either. I was so pleased, I giggled like a schoolboy. ... show more

  • A great grab for 10 Gbps networking, depending on the price
Style: 12 port | 10G | 2xSFP+ | Managed
I had a QNAP switch that had 4 10Gbe ports and 8 1Gbe ports. But, I needed more. I had been watching numerous different switches from multiple vendors ... none of switch fit exactly what I needed and were affordable. For example, I could get unmanaged switches to expand my total ports for $200-500 depending on size. Or, I could get say 8-24 10Gbe ports but pay > $1000. This switch has 12 10Gbe ports and it is normally priced at $1150. Recently Amazon marked it down to $900. Couldn't pass that up! This product is geared towards business / prosumer market. It has VLAN and other L2 managed switch features and to take advantage of that, you'll need to be comfortable with configuring switches by directly connecting a computer to them and using a web interface. If you're looking for pure unmanaged plug-n-play and easy mode setup, this is likely not the product you want. That said, this switch would definitely work out of the box as an unmanaged 10Gbe switch with no configuration required ... it's just that if you're buying this device, you likely want the extra management features. So far, the device has been working fine. I have it in my tech rack in the basement and it's fans are only audible if you are very close to the device. It was warm to the touch but I suspect the metal chassis is being used to dissipate heat; I wasn't concerned. If anything comes up I will post an update down the line. ... show more
