    • Louder than I expected, but I got used to it
The exterior of this Nespresso CitiZ & Milk is mostly plastic. The exceptions are both of the cup grated platforms and the pod lever. Those are made of chrome plated metal and have good weight to them. Glad to see that the lever is metal and feels nice and solid since it takes a bit of force to bring the lever down when piercing the pods. Other than that, at about 14.5 inches deep, it’s a bit deeper than my Keurig and didn’t fit in the same space I had intended. My first impression of this unit running was that it was loud. It sounded like a portable automotive tire inflator, albeit one of the higher end “quieter” ones. Although it seems to have gotten quieter after the first few uses. I’ve also probably gotten used to it as well and it isn’t too big of a deal now. But I’ll still eye my cup when brewing as the vibration causes my cups to walk a bit – not a lot, but it still makes me nervous. Warm up time is quick… about 20 seconds. Much quicker than my Keurig. Originally, I thought that there was a temperature difference between the first and second cup. So my initial routine was to run an empty brew (water only flush with no pod first), discard the water from the cup and then run an actual brew with the pod. But later, I investigated further with an instant read thermometer and found that the temperature of the first brew was indeed the same as the second. It turned out that the heat of the first brew was being taken up by the cup. So when I then reused this preheated cup, the temperature of the second brew was warmer because it didn’t lose as much temperature to the already heated cup. So while it’s not the machine’s fault, it still can help to run an empty brew to preheat the cup. But a couple of things if you do that… Be sure to lift the lever before removing the cup with the first empty brew. A good amount of water will drain out of the spout when the lever is lifted. Also, there will be a good amount of water that will drain into the tray below the empty pod container. Note that neither of these seem to happen with a pod in place. I now preheat my cup using water from my hot water dispenser, so I avoid this all together. The included Aerocinno 3 milk frother is pretty neat. With the 2% reduced fat milk that I use, it froths up pretty good and makes for some pretty looking drinks. Although I think the foam isn’t quite right (or at least, I haven’t gotten it quite right) as it seems quite thick doesn’t seem to flow/pour smoothly. Because of this, I pour the milk and foam into the cup first and then brew the coffee over that. It separates into layers just fine this way. Admittedly, the novelty of the milk frother has worn off a bit and I haven’t really used it lately, so make sure the Aerocinno is something that you really want if you get this “&Milk” version, as it is permanently attached to the side of the machine. It essentially doubles the width and it’s not the most elegant or space efficient configuration. But in all, this machine seems to function well so far and the Nespresso brews have been great. ... show more
