  • Excellent cost/benefit ratio for the enthusiast -- probably not for super heavy use, though
Model: TH15 Geared Head
I can only compare this to one other gear head that I recently purchased in this price category, but had to return because of the stiffness of the retaining springs and the multiple projections on the "fast" release knobs. Being an old guy, I'm getting a little arthritis in my hands, and the first gear head was almost impossible for me to manipulate; however, this one, with only 2 protrusions on the release knob and softer, but still effective, springs works well for me. I feel the need to clarify the advertising copy that refers to "Mode Control Knobs". They are actually release mechanisms that allow the user to adjust the angles by hand; they are not knobs that engage a different set of gears for moving the parts at a faster rate using the actual adjusting knobs. The Neewer is quite compact, also. I use a travel tripod with a screw-on center extension, and it fits without having to use the included extension. Thanks to reviewer Ryan, who lost his lens, for mentioning the cap screw on the Arca-style head base; I checked it out, and that screw is pretty obviously installed as a safety stop for the panoramic head that came with the base. I don't plan to use the pano feature, so I removed the little screw to avoid problems with fitting my own parts. The Arca-compatible clamping jaw has limited motion compared to the ball heads I've used, so a couple of my mounting plates are hard to fit; seems like an odd design oversight to me. The thin casting of the clamp base itself makes me wonder about its ability to withstand rough use. For me, being the old fart I am, the geared head will be just fine for macro and landscape photography. ... show more

  • Really well made and perfect for my application
Model: TH03 Pan Tilt Head
I used 3-way pan head when I learned photography decades ago. I switched to ball head when I jumped on the arca swiss QR band wagon. I have many ball heads over the years. Ball heads are great until you want precise movement in one axis only. I honestly didn't believe I would go back to pan head. I was looking for a smaller pan head but ready to spend some money for a good one. Up front, I didn't have good luck with this brand. But the price and size fit the bill. I gave it a chance. I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised. It is really well made. Motion in all directions are smooth and control is precise. I am going to it for intended camera motion photography. I particularly like the single handle which allows me to make controlled movements. No idea on long term reliability at this point. ... show more

  • Good, affordable but could be a little better.
Model: TH15 Geared Head
happy to find a reasonably priced geared head but you do get what you pay for in the instance. It's primary functions work fine but the attention to detail is lacking on mine. some of the knobs to speed up the adjustment don't work which I would have preferred they just leave them off if they can't get them to work. Happy to get it because the other models are at least twice the cost but I will not buy another one. ... show more

  • Well-Made And Worth The Money
Model: TH16 Geared Head w/QR Plate
The Neewer TH16 Gear Head camera mount is well-built, and I would recommend it to other people. I purchased it as a replacement for a pan-and-tilt camera mount that was not able to hold a heavy SLR camera without sagging. This camera mount is made of solid metal where it really counts, and strong enough to hold the camera, which is heavier than a brick, though it would be fine for lighter-weight cameras and other devices as well. When set, it keeps the camera positioned in place, with no drifting or sagging of the mechanism. I like the precise 3-axis tilt, with easy-to-read gauges. The included quick-release plate has a screw that is long enough to securely connect to my camera, even with the protective neoprene cover I placed on the camera body. I suggest buying this camera mount either in combination with, or as a package that includes, the Neewer Panoramic Quick Release Plate (or Panning Head), which was about $20.00 U.S. at the time I purchased it. Considering how well-built and functional both mechanisms are, they are a good value for the money and should hold up for years of use for indoor or outdoor photography. ... show more

  • Sturdy, controllable, very precise
Model: TH16 Geared Head w/QR Plate
Precisely and smoothly controls a 5 pound, 4 inch Cassegrain astronomic scope even above 80X (I expect to go above 120X with no problem). Sturdy and stable when mounted on a good tripod. Will make tracking stars and planets easy. There are releases on all axes to make large adjustments. Three axes: rotate up/down, left/right, and tip side to side. Can align to select which knob does what, it depends on how the telescope or camera is attached. Long refractor or Newtonian scopes MAY be less stable. Less expensive than a motorized control. Be aware it attaches to a tripod with a 3/8 inch screw then attaches to a camera or scope with 1/4 inch screw. ... show more

  • Makes setting up your camera angle a breeze
Model: TH15 Geared Head
Getting my cameras correctly positioned for webinars, everyday streaming, etc. was always such a pain. Especially if there are any references in the background (where walls meet or ceiling lines or art on the walls) that make it obvious when the camera isn't exactly level or plumb. The typical ball mount on a tripod is difficult to maneuver because it moves around in all 3 dimensions at once. Grrr. This tripod head solves all those problems, and precisely positioning your camera is a breeze. With this unit, it is SO easy to tweak the way the camera is tilted in any direction. It works so well, I bought a second one for my secondary camera too. If you travel with your gear, one thing to make note of is this tripod head is sizeable and heavy, and it doesn't fold down into a compact, travel-friendly size. ... show more
