  • Does exactly what I need it to do
Style: installed
Purchased as an emergency heat source. I've owned it for 2-1/2 years and used it 3 times most recently for about 4 days. The first time I used it was for about 24 hours when it was 38 below and my fancy high-efficiency furnace had pressure switch problems and wouldn't run. This 20k btu heater on its highest setting kept ~750 sq feet of my (not very well insulated) home pretty much comfortable but did use about a pound of propane per hour which makes sense because propane is ~21k btu per pound and this is rated to use 20k btu per hour on high. Kept us warm enough and kept the pipes from freezing until I could obtain a pressure switch for the furnace. That use case was exactly what I worried about enough to buy a back up heater. It performed admirably. Last week in temps ranging from 22 degrees at night to 38 degrees during the daytime and 20-40 mph winds sucking the heat out of my place, I ran it for just a bit less than 4 days during a power outage. I never turned it up past the #3 setting and the thermostat switched the heat on and off as expected. After ~4 days, there was still at maybe 8-10 lbs of propane left in the 30lb tank it was hooked to. I think I could have gone at least another full day without having to swap tanks. I use the included feet and don't have it permanently mounted to the wall. It's perfectly stable. I run the regulator hose to a tank outside through a casement window and just run a strip of duct tape to seal the rest of the window. And, while I do have an CO & combustible gas detector in the area where I operate this, I don't actually worry about it. So long as the flame is almost entirely blue and it isn't sputtering, then everything is working right and there's nothing to fret about. When I bought this, I understood that I needed a hose, regulator, and a 90 degree fitting. Many of the negative reviews regard folks not knowing that. I suppose in today's world where we expect instant gratification and hope to put forth zero effort, it's hard to blame them for being upset. It wasn't any sort of problem for me, though. Other complaints seem to be about noises and odor. 1) Noises. I haven't really noticed any noises that are bothersome. There's a tick when the thermostat regulates the gas up/down/on/off, but that's what mechanical thermostats do. No problem for me. 2) Odors. Yes. Burning propane indoors unvented creates a bit of an odor. It's no worse than operating a propane oven/stove. I don't find it to be overwhelmingly offensive, so no problem for me on that point, either. I will say that 2 days in to this latest use, I did choose to open a couple of windows on each side of the house for about 15 minutes once. That served to remove the odor for a while and decrease the humidity a little. ... show more

  • Exactly as described

Second one I've purchased. Both are doing a great job! Easy to install and use. Puts out a ton of heat. I think it works best with the optional fan.

  • Awesome In Every Way. Update...
Style: installed
I purchased a 30,000 BTU heater a few months back and love it. For the master bedroom & bath I've been using electric heaters. After still freezing in the back half of the house and a $600 power bill, I decided to buy another propane heater. In such a small area I certainly didn't need 20,000 BTUs but this was the smallest I could find with an actual thermostat. The thermostat works great! The range is marked 0-5 not in degrees. But they are very accurate. #2 setting keeps it at a toasty 74 degrees when it's below freezing outside. Being so large, it only runs for less than a minute cycling on & off as needed. I expect it will pay for itself the first month. It can set on the floor with the included feet or be wall mounted with the included bracket. It's a bit modern looking for my taste but the blue flame and performance more than makes up for that minor flaw. To connect it to a gas supply, you will need some brass fittings / hardware, a hose & regulator unless connected to your main supply. Every component is available on Amazon or your local hardware store. Don't forget teflon tape for the threaded pipe joints! Maintenance is quick & easy. Basically cleaning the pilot orfice of dust that may accumulate. The manual says every three months. My house apparently lacks any insulation and resembles a wind tunnel. (I bought it over the phone, without seeing it first lol. Initially I didn't care, I bought it for the land & planned on building a new house anyway. I just never imagined it could be this bad.) I'm in awe these two heaters can keep up but they do, and quite well! They are comparatively economical to operate too. Hopefully our new house will be finished before next winter. And yes, I'm transferring these heaters to the new place! If it turns out they aren't needed, I can put them in the stable to keep my horses warm. I would absolutely buy them again and highly recommend them! To clarify, the larger heater (30,000 BTU) in the living room would heat the entire house but the back is generally closed off. That's why I needed the smaller 20,000 BTU unit. FYI the thermostat in the living room is set about 2 1/4 to maintain 74 degrees. Obviously you can adjust the temperature to your liking. I prefer HOT. Shipping was fast and very well packed. UPS proof. After using them I suspect they would perform equally well in a workshop / garage where open flame wouldn't be an issue. Buy this, you will be VERY happy with it. Update... After complete satisfaction with the first two, I just bought a third for my workshop. This time Amazon suggested a hose & regulator kit which I gladly bought with it. It's somewhat of a pain in the rump to find the right hose & fittings each time. This made it really easy. Everything was included but a tank (which I already have). I think it's actually less expensive in kit form as well. I might buy #4 for the barn to spoil my horses. 😉 ... show more

  • Good heater
Style: installed
This heater works quite well. One issue for our situation is that we wanted to use it to heat a garden shed with many windows that we use as a large coldframe in the spring, so we only need to heat it to around 45-50, whereas the heater will heat to around 60 at its lowest setting, using a lot more gas. Based on a suggestion from one technician, I removed the heat sensor from the back and moved it close to the front of the unit on the inside, in order to trick the heater into thinking the air was warmer than it really was. This did help a good deal. Some have noted incomplete burning and therefore an odor when it's run for a long time at the lowest setting. I think we had that once too. If you're using this with a standard small tank attached by a hose, when you first attach a new tank, leave it connected for at least a half hour (or even an hour) before doing anything and, after that, hold down the dial in Pilot position for at least as long as they suggest (30 second or more) before you try to start. Once it catches and has burned for a while, it's easy to start again. Keep in mind that you need a regulator (not supplied with the unit.) ... show more

  • Works well if you can afford to feed it.
Style: installed
I'm absolutely thrilled with this heater. It is, and can be a literal lifesaver. Bought this to put in a 40ft motorhome for a back up.... Just in case of a power outage..... The afternoon I installed it, temps dropped to 11° below zero and stayed that way for a week. As anticipated, power went out 4 hours after I installed it . I couldn't believe it. This heater ALONE kept my place 70° without a hiccup, in -11° weather and I never got past the minimal setting. (#1 out of 5)! I've had it for 9 days, it works perfectly, thermostat works perfectly, off and on again by itself, without me having to leave my comfort zone. No noise, ( I expected some cracking sounds as the metal expanded and contracted) as it warmed and cooled. Nope, totally quiet. For my money.... It is an incredible value. The design is total simplicity, if it's not operating correctly, the fix can't be too complicated. It got the real test the very first night, and totally exceeded any expectations I had. UPDATE: 11 Days after installation, heater emptied a 100 pound propane tank, ($75 worth). I had high hopes this would be a cost effective alternative to heating with electricity. For me.... It is not. Even though it got me through a week of sub zero weather, including two power outages, and never needing to turn the thermostat past #1, it went through propane like it was water. I was hopeful that a 100 lb tank would last a month. At this rate of consumption, a month of use, on the lowest possible setting, would cost me $220. That, in addition to my electric bill, just doesn't pencil out to be feasible for use as a soul heating appliance. However.... In an emergency, power outage type situation..... It could be a lifesaver. IF............ You have a substantial amount of propane on hand. One's not much good without the other. ... show more

  • Works well,

The heater was very stable using the provided feet, but ultimately I hung it on the wall to save floor space. Also, my wife did alot of sewing and making things near the heater and having it on the wall kept fabric from coming near it. The heater does have a slight odor when running so my wife uses a couple of scented candles to mask it. ... show more

  • Won't stay lit on low settings ,doesn't warm room on high
Style: installed
Bought this thing just to supplement heat in my small living room {16X12} . Installed a hose & regulator suggested for the 20,000 BTU model . there's no inlet fitting supplied which ought to be for a 200$ heater. Finally got it to light set on low #1 ..flame went out less than a min. Set on lo #2 flame went out after a minute or 2. Set heat on setting #3 stove stayed lit , but flame was low as setting #1. Ok so it has a thermostat , I turned the room heat or thermostat down to less than 70 .. Let room cool down , tried turning lp off a while. Turn Lp back on set On # 1 lo , same thing as b4. Same for lo #2 . You had to stand 2-3 feet from the heater to tell it was on ..Yes I did add the blower kit . I ran this thing for a good 3 or 4 hrs. This thing is a waste of time & fuel in my opinion .. Of course it appears that return shipping's not offered free cause It's not Amazon's product. Buy it if you like ..i'm sorry i ever saw this thing . ... show more

  • Why I love this heater
Style: installed
1. Do not underestimate the importance of having a thermostat on a heater. I am a mr. Heater fan and have the big buddy and little buddy but you have to be right there to turn it down if it gets too warm. Having the thermostat is great and saves on fuel because it shuts off when it's warm enough. There is a very nice feature no matter where the thermostat is set that when it approaches the turn off temperature the flame will reduce to about half so I assume it goes from 20000 to 10000 BTU which is going to save fuel. I do not like the range of the thermostat. I have never used it above 1 and heat a 36-foot travel trailer in 30 degree weather. Although it may not be recommended you can tweak the thermostat between pilot and number one and get a range out of it where it will still cycle in the temperature range around 55 to 60. 2. Believe what other people say about the 90 degree adapter that comes with it. I thought well they just don't know how to thread it carefully and I do. I carefully screwed it on barely fingertight and tried to unscrew it and it wouldn't budge. Let me emphasize don't even try it. I ended up not needing one anyway. 3. This has a nice window to look at the nice blue flame. This type of heaters job is to heat the air and it does that great except the Heat and the air goes straight up. If you expect to sit in front of it and feel the nice warmth you will be disappointed. What you will feel is the cool air on the floor returning to the heater to be heated and thrust upward. If you want the radiant direct feel of the warmth soaking into your clothing and feeling cozy you need a heater like the mr. Buddy. 5. Pay attention to the measurements. The photos gave me the impression that the unit was much smaller. 6. I do not notice a bad propane smell. I'm sure there's some but it doesn't bother me. I feel good that I'm getting a hundred percent efficiency versus a vented furnace such as the one installed in the trailer where so much of the heat goes out the vent on the side. I am not at all concerned about leaving it on while I sleep unlike most people. Remember these units only produce water and carbon dioxide the same thing you exhale from your lungs. Unless there is an incomplete burning issue you will not get carbon monoxide the poisonous gas. I also feel like I can trust the oxygen sensor to turn off the unit before a lack of oxygen turns me off, again I'm probably unique in my opinions. For the water buildup on the windows I use a sponge and a squeegee and then ring out the sponge and have the water go down the drain. I had this lame brainstorm idea that I would use a Shop-Vac to suck off the moisture and yes it did work but the sponge and squeegee method is much easier. 7. Pet Friendly.. When I used the Buddy radiatant heater I had to worry about their fur touching hot surface and have singed tales, BUT this heater is actually cool all around because all the heat goes straight up to heat the room. ... show more
