  • Good sub for the price
Style: Subwoofer
Overall, it's a solidly built, decent sounding sub. The frequency control is a bit touchy (a tiny change near the cutoff point I want either direction results in too boomy, or too lean), but when dialed in, the results balanced nicely with my system. I'm going to give the auto on feature a bit of time before I comment on it, but for now, I'm leaving it in auto mode to extend it's life. So far, so good. It's come on when sound is sent to it. As far as output, it's houseshaking when turned up (too much). I have it set just a touch past half way, and it blends in well with my Boston surround system, providing needed low end, without being too overwhelming. It's a touch punchy when set like this, which is great for action in films. For music, I tend to adjust the cutoff a touch and extend it down some... but I'm still playing with it, and may arrive at a cutoff that works perfectly for both in the room I'm working with (a small, 12' x 16', carpeted living room). ... show more

  • A Great Subwoofer If You Have Realistic Expectations
Style: Subwoofer
If you expect to use this subwoofer for any kind of home theater setup, then you’re probably going to experience a pretty high degree of disappointment because this just will not hit low enough or hard enough to reproduce a movie soundtrack. That job would be better filled by Monolith subwoofers, which I can attest to as I have been running dual 10s for the last 5 years in an 18x13 open great room with no shortage of tooth-rattling rumble. What this subwoofer is good for is to fill in the low end for a small desktop or garage 2.1 system at moderate levels. I have mine in my garage connected to an Aiyima A07 Max amp and a pair of Polk XT15 bookshelf speakers, and it easily fills the 20x20 space at little more than 1/4 volume. The bass blends very smoothly and transparently with the XT15s with no boominess or thumping or localization. It feels pretty light, but the construction quality is solid and the appearance is about as good as you get in this price range. The reviews complaining about how bad this subwoofer is when compared to the ones costing $1000+ or when using it with big speakers are kind of ridiculous. Would I expect this subwoofer to perform well compared to my Monolith 10s or with my Polk ES60s that go down to 32Hz? This fits a particular niche and will perform quite well when paired with smaller bookshelf speakers and used at moderate volumes. Expecting $1000 performance for under $200 is just delusional. ... show more

  • Pairs well with repurposed equipment
Style: Subwoofer
Purchased subwoofer a few months ago, so they are fully broken in now. Paired well with my a Polk Soundbar 50 and Denon AVR 3808ci for a stereo/5.1 setup. Using these to supplement an older Plasma TV which refuses to die for music streaming, video streaming, audio books and casual Xbox gaming in a spare room. Subwoofer sounds better than expected plus fairly well built. For my use case, in a smaller room it gives enough umph to upset my dog on occasion if I crank it bit over half way. Not worthy of pairing with audiophile equipment since it will run out of steam quickly, yet works fine in my use case. If you keep nice sounding audiophile equipment in your main room, then this subwoofer fits the use case of complementing your older starter equipment collecting dust in a closet or garage. Curious how a pair of these would sound dialed into a space. Budget friendly and nice -not great - sounding. ... show more

  • Awesome subwoofer!
Style: Subwoofer
I got his subwoofer used through the Amazon Warehouse Deals. It arrived without a power cable but I figured that is why I got it for $73. The speaker itself is in very good cosmetic condition. I looked around for a power cord that could work and I found an old power cable from my old computer that worked perfectly. I used an RCA type coax cable to connect it through the LFE connector. At first I really thought there was something wrong as I got this annoying hum. It appeared the speaker was receiving a signal and worked but I could hardly hear anything through the hum. Before I started packing the speaker for return in frustration, I decided to do a little research on the hum and I found a few things that could cause it. When I unplugged the cable from the speaker, the hum disappeared, meaning that the speaker itself was fine. So, I started unplugging connections in sequence to see where the hum would disappear. When I unplugged the receiver's connection to the cable box, the hum disappeared completely. It turned out the cable box has some ground loop currents that the speaker amplified. After the hum was gone, wow! Beautiful sound came from this little subwoofer. It is awesome! Trust me, you would be insane to need anything bigger than this unless you just want to blow your home up or you have an auditorium to fill or you want to make enemies of your neighbors. This is more than enough for your living room! Even at low volumes, the music seems louder because the lower musical zone is filled up. The sound is rich! I love this sub. It also works very well in auto mode. ... show more

  • Defective right out of the box.
Style: Subwoofer
This subwoofer was defective right out of the box. It produces a low frequency buzzing noise. It starts to become audible when the sub's volume control is turned past 60%. When no cable is attached to the RCA LFE the. buzzing stops, however, when a RCA cable is plugged it, this triggers the buzzing. I was told my RCA cable is of low quality and is not shielded, bought two purpose build RCA cables heavily shielded and made for Subwoofer connection. Didn't work still buzzed. It also buzzed when connected to the AV reveiver. Fortunately I had also purchased a Klipsch 10" Subwoofer. It produced no buzzing with my RCA cables including the one that was labled as cheap and unshielded. I strongly believe in what you pay is what you get. The Monoprice Premium Select Subwoofer 8" certainly falls into this category. My new Klipsch cost 2.5 times the Monoprice, but you can feel the quality. I will contact Amazon for a refund. ... show more
