    • Works As Advertised - Not For Outdoor Winter Use
I do a lot of outdoor “investigation” type activities. Right now it’s winter (January) and it’s really cold here in Farmland WI, USA. I’ve been monitoring our local inland freshwater lake as it cools and freezes over. Monitoring the water temperature, and now measuring the thickness of the ice and temperature of the ice at various points is of interest. The manufacturer says this device will measure temperatures as low as -30F … and it will! The only problem is that the device itself only operates accurately down to 32F … below that, the readings are erratic and unreliable. So, I can be in my home, 70F, open the Freezer door and point the device at a frozen item and bingo! It reads the temperature … 2F or whatever. But, if I take it outside when the temperature is, say 10F, it operates erratically. What I can do is put it inside my warm shirt pocket for a few minutes, take it out and make a couple of quick measurements. In less than a minute though it craps out again. But I can’t complain, it works as advertised and I highly recommend it for use as advertised. ... show more

It is good , I use it to test the basking temp for my bearded dragon. You have to point at the exact spot you want to measure. For me it is the middle of the basking rock our dragon uses. It is accurate.

It came with the required 9V battery. It was easy to install and so easy to use that the included instructions weren’t even truly necessary (but were appreciated).
